"Fight your foes in the field, nor be burnt in your house": Fanning the Flames -Sweden Police grant permit to a 37-year-old man for Quran Burning Protest outside Stockholm’s Mosque and that to on the Islamic holiday “Eid Al-Adha” sparking NATO entry woes
In an unprecedented move that could have far-reaching consequences, Swedish officials have given the nod for a Quran-burning demonstration to take place right outside a central Stockholm mosque this Wednesday. Adding to the intensity of this act, the protest aligns with the Muslim festival of Eid-al-Adha, a celebration of high religious importance to the Islamic community.

This decision, while upholding the principles of free speech, has placed Sweden on shaky ground regarding its ambitions to join NATO, largely due to anticipated objections from Turkey.
NATO officials now find themselves facing a race against the clock, striving to prevent the awkward spectacle of the alliance failing to achieve its self-declared goal of welcoming Sweden into its ranks by July 11 – the date set for the next official summit in Vilnius, the Lithuanian capital. There's a growing concern among officials that failing to meet this deadline would be not only humiliating but could also convey a potentially dangerous signal to the alliance's adversaries.
Turkey, which enjoys a strategic significance within NATO due to its geographical positioning at the nexus of the Middle East and Europe, and also being the alliance's second-largest military power, has emerged as the most formidable barrier to Sweden's induction into NATO.
Sweden, the nation known for its pickled herring, flat-pack furniture, and now, as it turns out, its unflappable commitment to freedom of speech, has just pulled a stunner. In a move that might have some delicate folks clutching their prayer beads, the Swedish police have given a hearty "Heja!" to a Quran-burning protest right outside Stockholm’s main mosque, just in time for Eid-Al-Adha. Holy smoke!
You see, an appeals court rolled its eyes at the previous ban on these protests, stating that "the order and security problems" cited by the police seemed a little too vague. Translation: "We're not seeing the big, fiery issue here, folks!"
So, on Wednesday, June 28, Salwan Momika, an apparent aficionado of controversial book reviews, was given the green light to stage his Quran roast. If it proceeds, this will be the first public spectacle of its kind since Rasmus Paludan, leader of a Danish far-right party, warmed his hands over a burning Quran near the Turkish embassy in Stockholm. As you'd expect, that little stunt didn't exactly make him the most popular guy in the Turkish phonebook.
President Erdogan, clearly not a fan of open-air book critiques, retaliated by putting Sweden's NATO membership application on ice faster than a meatball in an IKEA freezer. Not a fan of diversity of opinion, Turkey, already a NATO member, is quick to show critics of its president the exit and slap labels on the Kurds.
Despite two previous requests for Quran-burning protests being shot down, the recent approval suggests that the Swedish police may have found their inner Viking spirit. The permit for the demonstration even carries a nonchalant disclaimer about potential "foreign policy consequences," implying a Quran bonfire isn't a significant reason to deny an application. You've got to admire that Norse nerve!
According to Stockholm police, the anticipated turnout for this event is about two people. Yes, just Salwan and his shadow, expressing their fiery opinions. Salwan, in his application, was pretty upfront about his plans: “I want to protest in front of the large mosque in Stockholm, and I want to express my opinion about the Qur’an… I will tear up the Qur’an and burn it.” Nothing like a bit of dramatic flair to spice up your public protest!
Meanwhile, amidst this smoky drama, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson casually mentioned that Sweden's still pretty keen on joining NATO. And preferably before or during the next summit in Vilnius. You've got to hand it to the Swedes, they're brave, bold, and can certainly handle the heat!

Here are few incidents of Quran burning and their aftermath
The act of Quran burning has unfortunately led to numerous bouts of violence by pro-Islamic groups in the past, serving as stark reminders of how religious intolerance can incite dangerous and destructive actions. These reactionary incidents echo a concerning global pattern of aggression and conflict that frequently erupts from members of the Islamic community at the slightest provocation, real or perceived.
One such incident took place in the Swedish town of Linköping in April 2022, which found itself in the grip of violence incited by an announcement from Stram Kurs, a Danish anti-immigration party. This political group publicly declared their intention to burn a copy of the Quran, a revelation that sparked a firestorm of outrage and physical aggression among the local Muslim community.
Driven by religious fervor and chanting 'Allahu Akbar', a horde of masked men fell upon the town like a storm, targeting the symbols of law and order. They descended upon police vehicles, unleashing a barrage of attacks that ended in the fiery destruction of these symbols of peacekeeping. Independent researcher Hugo Kamman reported that this savage display resulted in injuries to four police officers. The authorities, attempting to restore order and bring justice to this chaotic situation, managed to apprehend two individuals linked to this disturbing act of violence.
In a separate episode of intolerance in July 2022, aggression took a decidedly personal and physical turn. This time, the victim was Lars Thorsen, leader of 'Stop the Islamisation of Norway' (SIAN), an anti-Islamisation group. Two women deliberately rammed their vehicle into Thorsen's, resulting in a shocking crash that saw his car flipped upside down. This terrifying incident was captured on video and rapidly circulated on social media platforms, chilling viewers with its raw display of hostility.
It was reported that the women had targeted Thorsen in retaliation for his public act of burning copies of the Quran. The violent encounter happened in broad daylight, around 3 PM, as Thorsen was driving towards Norway's capital city, Oslo, on July 2.

These incidents serve as a harsh critique of the volatile reactions elicited by certain members of the Islamic community. They point towards a deep-seated intolerance that fuels aggression and violence in response to actions perceived as insults towards their religious beliefs. This cycle of provocations and violent reactions is not just detrimental to global peace but also tarnishes the image of the Islamic community, overshadowing the peaceful practices of the majority of its members. Such extremist behaviors demand a stronger condemnation from both the global community and moderate Islamic leaders.
