Bondi Beach Hanukkah Shooting: Sajid Akram and Naveed Akram Identified as Assailants; ISIS Connections Surface – Key Details So Far

On 14th December, a Jewish Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, was targeted in a brutal act of violence. Pakistani origin Naveed Akram and his father Sajid Akram opened fire on people attending the public religious gathering. What began as a festive community event quickly turned into one of the most horrific terrorist attacks Australia has seen in decades.

The antisemitic attack resulted in the deaths of 15 innocent people, including a 10 year old girl, and left dozens of others injured. Australian authorities later confirmed that the massacre met the legal definition of terrorism. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese strongly condemned the attack and described it as “evil antisemitism and terrorism on our shores”, reflecting the severity of the crime and the pain felt across the country.

The shooting occurred during a public Hanukkah event organised by Chabad of Bondi. Approximately 1,000 people were present, many of them families with young children. Bondi Beach, one of Australia’s most recognisable public spaces, was transformed into a site of terror within minutes, leaving survivors traumatised and communities in mourning.

Timeline of the Terror Attack at Bondi Beach

The attack began at around 6:47 pm local time. New South Wales Police received multiple emergency calls reporting gunfire near Archer Park, an area located next to Bondi Beach. The location was crowded due to the Hanukkah event titled “Chanuka by the Sea 2025,” which had drawn a large public turnout.

Within minutes, police issued public alerts urging people to take cover and stay away from the beach. Videos recorded by witnesses rapidly spread across social media, showing scenes of chaos as hundreds of people screamed, ran across the sand, and fled into nearby streets to escape the gunfire.

Subsequent footage, later verified by multiple media outlets, showed the attackers firing from a small pedestrian bridge connecting the Campbell Parade car park to the beachfront. This elevated position allowed them a clear view of the crowd below.

In one widely circulated video, a bystander confronted one of the attackers, tackling him and briefly disarming him. The attacker then retreated toward the bridge, where the second terrorist continued firing at people below.

Police arrived shortly after and engaged both attackers. Sajid Akram was shot dead by police at the scene. Naveed Akram sustained critical injuries and was taken into custody. He remains hospitalised under police guard.

Investigators confirmed that Sajid Akram was a licensed firearms holder with a Category AB firearms licence. He legally owned six firearms, all of which police believe were used in the Bondi Beach attack. Four long arms, including a rifle and a shotgun, were seized at the scene. Additional weapons were recovered during raids at properties linked to Sajid in Campsie and Bonnyrigg.

Man Who Charged Toward Gunfire Credited With Saving Lives

The civilian who ran toward the gunfire has been identified as Ahmed al Ahmed, a local fruit shop owner. During his attempt to stop one of the attackers, Ahmed was shot and suffered bullet injuries to his arm and hand. Despite being wounded, his actions disrupted the attack.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns praised Ahmed’s bravery and described him as a “genuine hero”. Minns stated that Ahmed’s actions saved many lives, acknowledging the personal risk he took during the unfolding terror.

Fatalities, Injuries, and Children Among the Victims

New South Wales Police confirmed that 15 people were killed in the attack. The victims ranged in age from 10 to 87 years old, showing the indiscriminate nature of the violence. The death of a 10 year old girl caused widespread public outrage and intensified national grief.

At least 42 people were hospitalised with injuries, several of them in critical condition. Four children were transferred to Sydney Children’s Hospital for specialist care. Authorities have not confirmed whether the deceased child was among those transferred earlier.

Two police officers were also shot while responding to the attack. They were initially reported to be in serious to near critical condition, highlighting the risks faced by first responders during the incident.

Extremist Connections, IS Symbols, and Earlier Intelligence Review

During the investigation, authorities recovered improvised explosive devices and two Islamic State flags from a vehicle linked to the attackers. One of the flags was reportedly displayed on the bonnet of the car, pointing to extremist motivation behind the violence.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that Naveed Akram had been examined by ASIO in 2019 due to his associations with individuals connected to extremist networks. He was investigated for six months and assessed at the time as not posing an immediate threat.

Media reports further stated that Naveed had links to a Sydney based Islamic State cell and was allegedly associated with Isaak El Matari, an IS operative jailed in 2019 for plotting an attack in Australia.

Naveed Akram’s Personal History and Radical Shift

Former colleagues of Naveed Akram told Australian media that he worked as a bricklayer across several construction sites in Sydney. He was described as quiet, socially withdrawn, and unusual in behaviour, though generally hardworking.

Colleagues also said Naveed had a strong interest in hunting and firearms. One former co worker stated that Naveed often spoke about shooting rabbits and other game animals in rural New South Wales. While authorities have not confirmed that Naveed held a firearms licence, reports suggest he had access to weapons through his father.

Global Reactions and Diplomatic Statements

The attack triggered swift condemnation from international leaders. Israeli President Isaac Herzog described it as a cruel antisemitic attack against Jews. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Western governments of allowing antisemitism to grow through political silence.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also issued a statement on social media, saying, “Strongly condemn the ghastly terrorist attack carried out today at Bondi Beach, Australia, targeting people celebrating the first day of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. On behalf of the people of India, I extend my sincere condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. We stand in solidarity with the people of Australia in this hour of grief. India has zero tolerance towards terrorism and supports the fight against all forms and manifestations of terrorism.”

France’s foreign minister confirmed the death of French citizen Dan Elkayam and expressed solidarity with Australia’s Jewish community. King Charles said he was appalled and saddened by the antisemitic terrorist violence.

Political Impact and Push for Stronger Measures

Prime Minister Albanese stated that the Australian government was prepared to use all available resources to combat antisemitism and terrorism. He also indicated openness to tightening gun laws if investigations uncover systemic failures.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke confirmed that Naveed Akram was Australian born, while his father entered Australia on a student visa in 1998 before later transitioning to a partner visa and resident return visas. These details have fuelled political debate over long term monitoring, radicalisation, and security screening.

Opposition leaders have demanded parliamentary briefings on intelligence failures, firearms licensing processes, and counter extremism frameworks, warning that the Bondi Beach attack must not be treated as an isolated lapse.

What Lies Ahead in the Investigation

The Bondi Beach area remains sealed as police continue forensic examinations and broader investigations. Authorities are reviewing intelligence handling, firearms licensing systems, and whether information held by federal agencies was adequately shared with state police.

Premier Chris Minns has indicated that changes to gun laws are likely, while federal authorities have pledged to deploy all available resources to combat antisemitism. Minns acknowledged that it is too early to determine whether intelligence held by federal agencies should have been shared more widely. However, the scale and ideological nature of the attack have renewed debate over how threat assessments are conducted, closed, and revisited over time.
