"They tied him to a tree, set him on fire and left his burnt body outside": Father of Hindu worker Dipu Chandra Das recounts horror as factory manager forced him to resign and handed him to a Muslim mob for lynching in Bangladesh

They Tied Him to a Tree and Burned Him Alive: Father Speaks After Hindu Man Is Lynched in Bangladesh

Fresh violence in Bangladesh has once again raised serious concerns about the safety of the Hindu minority after a Hindu man was brutally lynched by a mob in the Mymensingh district.

The incident unfolded during a period of widespread unrest across the country, which erupted following the death of a controversial anti-India and jihadi activist. This unrest has led to protests, chaos, and targeted attacks in several regions, creating an atmosphere of fear and instability.

The victim, Dipu Chandra Das, was a Hindu man working at a garment factory in Mymensingh. On Thursday night, 18th December, he was brutally beaten to death after a group of Islamists accused him of insulting Islam. The violence did not end with his death. After killing him, the mob tied his lifeless body to a tree, poured kerosene over it, and set it on fire. Disturbing visuals later surfaced showing several individuals celebrating the act, adding to the horror of the crime.

Father Learns About Son’s Killing Through Social Media

In an interview with NDTV, Dipu’s father, Ravilal Das, spoke with deep pain and shock about how he learned of his son’s death. He said that the family did not receive any official information at first and instead began hearing disturbing reports online. “We started hearing things on Facebook. Then people began telling us he had been badly beaten,” he said. “After some time, my uncle told me they had tied my son to a tree.”

As he described the events, Ravilal Das struggled to hold back his grief. He explained that kerosene was poured on Dipu’s body before it was set on fire. “They left his burnt body outside. His head and torso were tied there. It was horrible,” he said, trying to come to terms with the brutal loss of his son.

Although the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus publicly condemned the lynching and said action would be taken, the family says they have received no direct communication or support. “No one from the government has spoken to us or given any support,” the grieving father said, expressing disappointment and helplessness.

Ravilal Das also said that it remains unclear who exactly led the mob. He mentioned that there are rumours pointing to extremist groups such as Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh or its student wing, Chhatra Shibir, but stressed that nothing has been officially confirmed so far.

The killing of Dipu Chandra Das has once again highlighted the fragile situation of minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh. With elections approaching and emotions still raw following Hadi’s death, many fear that extremist elements are using the unrest as an opportunity to target those they view as outsiders or ideological enemies. This lynching stands as a grim reminder of the growing sense of insecurity among minorities, as violence continues to spread and trust steadily erodes.

Factory Manager Handed Hindu Worker to Mob Before Lynching

On Friday, 19th December, Bangladesh’s Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) revealed a shocking detail in the case. Authorities said that the floor manager of the factory where Dipu Chandra Das worked had handed him over to the angry Muslim mob, directly leading to the brutal lynching.

Dipu, a 28-year-old worker, was beaten to death by the crowd on Thursday, 18th December, in the Mymensingh Bhaluka area. After the assault, his body was hung from a tree branch and set on fire, deepening the brutality of the crime.

He had been working for the past two years at Pioneer Knitwears BD Ltd, a readymade garment factory located in Bhaluka. Dipu originally came from his ancestral home in Tarakanda. Following his death, his brother filed a case against unknown individuals for murder.

On Saturday, 20th December, RAB held a press conference and announced that 10 people connected to the killing had been arrested. RAB-14 Director Naimul Hassan stated that among those arrested were floor manager Alamgir Hossain, aged 38, and quality manager Miraz Hossain Akon, aged 46, both employed at the same factory. RAB arrested seven suspects, while police detained three others.

The remaining eight arrested individuals were identified as Tarek Hossain, Limon Sarker, Manik Miah, Ershad Ali, Nijhum Uddin, Azmal Hasan Sagir, Shahin Miah, and Md Nazmul.

Naimul Hassan said investigators are trying to understand why the factory manager chose to hand Dipu over to the mob instead of calling the police. He added that the reason could be linked to old enmity or pressure from the violent crowd, and the investigation is ongoing to uncover the full truth behind the lynching.
