Tragedy in British Columbia: 10 Dead, Dozens Injured in Tumbler Ridge School Shooting

A profound tragedy has struck the quiet community of Tumbler Ridge in northeastern British Columbia. On Tuesday, a mass shooting devastated the local secondary school and a nearby residence, leaving a trail of heartbreak in its wake. Authorities have confirmed that at least 10 people have died, a figure that includes the suspected shooter. Additionally, medical teams at the local centre are currently treating at least 25 other individuals for various injuries sustained during the attack.

The violence began early in the afternoon. The Tumbler Ridge Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) received urgent reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School at 1:20 p.m. on February 10. In response, a Police Initiated Public Alert (PIPA) was immediately broadcast to warn residents of the danger. The alert remained in effect throughout the tense afternoon until it was officially cancelled at 5:45 p.m., signaling the end of the immediate threat.

According to Canadian police, the toll was catastrophic. Six victims were discovered deceased within the walls of the high school. Another victim tragically passed away while being transported to the hospital. The violence was not contained solely to the school grounds; officers discovered two more deceased individuals at a private residence, which investigators have stated is directly connected to the incident.

The suspected gunman was found dead inside the school later that afternoon. Police stated the suspect died from “what appears to be a self‑inflicted injury”. Law enforcement officials have moved quickly to reassure the grieving community, noting that they do not believe there are any other suspects involved or any continuing danger to the public.

Superintendent Ken Floyd, the North District Commander, highlighted the collaborative effort during the chaos. “This was a rapidly evolving and dynamic situation, and the swift cooperation from the school, first responders, and the community played a critical role in our response,” he said.

National and International Leaders React with Shock

The scale of the violence has drawn immediate condolences from leaders across Canada and the world. Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the nation with a heavy heart, offering his support to those grappling with unimaginable loss.

“I am devastated by today’s horrific shootings in Tumbler Ridge, B.C. My prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and friends who have lost their loved ones to these horrific acts of violence,” Carney wrote in a statement posted to X.

He continued, emphasizing the strength of the Canadian spirit in times of darkness: “I join Canadians in grieving with those whose lives have been changed irreversibly today, and in gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives to protect their fellow citizens. Our ability to come together in crisis is the best of our country — our empathy, our unity, and our compassion for each other.”

International support also poured in. On Wednesday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sorrow regarding the event. “Deeply shocked by the horrendous shooting in Canada. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. India stands in solidarity with the people of Canada in this moment of profound grief,” Modi posted on X.

Closer to home, B.C. Premier David Eby spoke at a press conference on Tuesday night, struggling to find words for the devastation. “We can’t imagine what the community is going through, but I know it’s causing us all to hug our kids a little bit tighter tonight,” Eby said.

He called on the province to rally around the small town. “I’d like to take this opportunity to ask British Columbians, to ask all Canadians to wrap the people of Tumbler Ridge, wrap these families with love, not just tonight, but tomorrow and into the future. This is something that will reverberate for years to come. As British Columbians, I know that one of the things we do best is look after each other. And I’m asking British Columbians to look after the people of Tumbler Ridge tonight.”

Students Recall the Horror Behind Barricaded Doors

For the students inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary, a regular Tuesday turned into a nightmare. Darian Quist, a Grade 12 student, shared his harrowing experience with Radio West host Sarah Penton. He recounted how he arrived at his class around 1:30 p.m. shortly before an alarm echoed through the hallways. The instructions were clear: close the doors immediately for a lockdown.

At first, the severity of the situation wasn't clear. Darian noted that the doors remained closed for some time before he and his classmates realized something was terribly wrong. In a desperate bid for safety, they barricaded themselves inside the classroom. They remained trapped there for more than two hours, waiting in fear until police officers finally arrived to escort them to safety.

The experience was disorienting for the young student. “It felt like I was somewhere that I had only seen across a TV,” Darian admitted.

While Darian was trapped inside, his mother, Shelley Quist, was living her own nightmare nearby. She told the CBC that she was at her workplace at the local hospital when news of the incident reached her. From her office window, she witnessed a massive emergency response. She described seeing “RCMP everywhere, fire, ambulances.”

The danger was so palpable that a colleague had to physically stop her from running toward the school to find her son. “There was an RCMP crouched down in our parking lot with his gun drawn,” Shelley recalled. It was at that terrifying moment she called Darian, instructing him to keep the line open. Her employer soon ordered staff with children to go home due to the active shooter situation. Shelley rushed home, locked her doors, and stayed on the phone with her son until he was safe.

Once Darian was evacuated, he reunited with his mother at a community centre a few hundred metres from the school. Reflecting on the size of his community, Darian explained that Tumbler Ridge is a small school, with perhaps only 20 students in his graduating class.

“The reality of it all is starting to set in,” he said. “I believe I knew somebody, but everything is still very fresh.”

Despite the trauma, Darian offered a message of resilience to his neighbors. When asked what he would say to his community, he urged people to “hold each other close.”“We are going to be able to get through this,” he insisted. The school has already announced it will work closely with the RCMP to support students as they attempt to reintegrate and heal.

Investigation Underway as Questions Mount About Suspect

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have launched a comprehensive investigation into the attack. They have stated they will be examining “the full circumstances surrounding this incident.”

North District Chief Superintendent Ken Floyd reiterated the difficulty of the day in a written statement: “Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragic incident. This has been an incredibly difficult and emotional day for our community, and we are grateful for the cooperation shown as officers continue their work to advance the investigation.”

While police have confirmed the shooter is dead, they have also noted that they may “struggle” to ever fully understand the motive behind what is now one of the deadliest school shootings in Canadian history.

Who Is the 18-Year-Old Linked to the Tragedy?

As the initial shock begins to subside, the focus has shifted to who could commit such an act. The shooting has left the small community of 2,400 residents searching for answers. While police confirmed the primary suspect died at the scene, investigators are painstakingly reconstructing the timeline and looking for any warning signs.

Several media outlets, including the Western Standard and Juno News, have reported that the suspect was 18-year-old Jesse Strang. These reports cite a close family member, with Juno News specifically claiming that the suspect’s uncle, Russell G. Strang, confirmed the identity.

However, it is important to note that the RCMP has not officially released or confirmed the suspect’s name. Authorities have stated they will only announce details after formal verification processes are complete. Currently, teams are gathering forensic and digital evidence.

Media reports have also surfaced regarding the suspect's online presence. It has been suggested that a public YouTube account potentially linked to Jesse Strang displayed a transgender flag and utilized “she/her” pronouns. These unverified details have sparked intense discussion on social media. Law enforcement has not commented on these personal details, maintaining their focus on the facts of the crime and the sequence of events rather than personal ideology. They have warned that unverified information online can hinder the investigation.

RCMP officers continue to analyze witness statements and physical evidence. Early rumors of a second attacker have not been substantiated, and no additional suspects have been confirmed.

Tumbler Ridge is a tight-knit town that rarely sees violence of this magnitude. As the community grieves, leaders are asking for patience. Police expect to clarify the suspect’s identity and potential motives in the coming days, but for now, they urge the public to rely only on verified official updates.
