Today, Justice Gaurang Kanth made his solemn pledge as a new member of the Calcutta High Court. The Chief Justice, TS Sivagnaman, supervised the oath-taking ceremony, offering the traditional and ceremonious phrases of the office oath, thereby confirming Justice Kanth's shift from the Delhi High Court to his new position. The Central Government, obeying the advice of the Supreme Court Collegium, had announced this transition previously.

On July 12, an interesting turn of events took place. The Collegium put forth a firm rejection to Justice Kanth's request for a transfer to either the Madhya Pradesh High Court, the Rajasthan High Court or any other neighbouring state court. With the judgment of Solomon himself, they declined his request and marked his destiny for Calcutta.

As part of the celebratory initiation, a collection of welcoming addresses were presented by prominent figures like AG SN Mookherjee and DSG-I Billwadal Bhattacharya. They emphasised a notable fact about Justice Kanth: he is now the youngest judge to grace the seats of the Calcutta High Court. Moreover, eloquent speeches were also delivered by the representatives from the Incorporated Law Society, the Bar Association, and the Bar Library Club, all recognising the significance of this event.

Expressing his sentiments during the ceremony, Justice Kanth contemplated the rich and storied history of the Calcutta High Court and committed to preserving its grandeur. Overflowing with appreciation, he thanked his family, his judicial colleagues, and the broader court community for their constant support.

Justice Kanth, originating from the East, found himself reflecting on the roots of his journey, the impressive heritage of the Calcutta High Court, and emphasising his obligation to assure that justice reaches the doorsteps of every individual who seeks it. He said:

"Thank you, to my colleagues, members of the Court, and my family members, for their relentless support. I am deeply grateful to the Chief Justice for administering the oath of office, enabling me to become a judge of this esteemed chartered High Court of the nation, with such an expansive and impressive legacy. I am humbled and honoured. My journey began in the East. Later, I pursued my studies in Delhi, and eventually settled in the North, leading to my elevation as a judge of the Delhi High Court. Now, destiny has spun a full circle and guided me back to the East, to serve the people here. I am awestruck by this monumental High Court, a beacon radiating fairness, justice, and the rule of law. This Court has played an influential role in shaping some of the brightest legal minds in the country. Given its extensive history and legacy, I feel an amplified responsibility to carry forward this tradition by ensuring the efficient and effective distribution of justice. The strength of our judiciary doesn't reside in the authority of an individual judge, but in the collective wisdom of its members. I hold in high regard the role of advocates as officers of the court, and I am all for fostering a constructive dialogue that promotes a spirit of camaraderie and mutual respect. Today, as I assume office, I take on the responsibility of assuring that the fruits of justice reach every home seeking it, and reestablish their faith in our nation's judicial machinery. I am devoted to fulfilling my duties as a judge of the Honourable Calcutta High Court to the best of my abilities."

AG S.N. Mookherjee and Deputy Solicitor General Billwadal Bhattacharya, as part of their welcoming addresses, mentioned Justice Kanth’s unique position as the youngest serving judge of the Calcutta High Court. They also touched upon his favourable relations with the Bar from his tenure at the Delhi High Court.

Justice Kanth's elevation to the Delhi High Court's bench happened on May 18, 2022. It's worth mentioning that the Delhi High Court Bar Association showed displeasure at the Collegium's proposal to transfer him, going to the extent of abstaining from work on July 17 in protest.

In a hilarious twist, an incident involving a pet dog resulted in Justice Kanth seeking the suspension of a police officer. A letter from Justice Kanth emerged, addressing the Joint Commissioner of Police (Security), demanding disciplinary action against the police officer who failed to secure the entrance of his residence, resulting in the loss of his beloved pet dog.

The letter reads as follows:

"I am writing this letter with a lot of pain and anguish. Due to the lack of dedication and incompetence of the officers responsible for my security, I have suffered the heart-wrenching loss of my pet dog. Despite my explicit instructions to keep the door locked, these officials have repeatedly failed to uphold their professional obligations. This type of negligence and incompetence requires immediate attention as it poses a significant threat to my life and liberty.

Such carelessness and a casual attitude by the said security personnel could potentially lead to an unfortunate incident at my residence, which makes me fear for my safety. Their negligence in monitoring the gate and the lackadaisical approach in controlling the movement in and out of my residence is absolutely intolerable. I implore you to immediately suspend the officers who have proven themselves unworthy of their government service and instigate a thorough investigation into this matter, which could have posed a grave threat to my family and me.

Please submit an action taken report in this regard within 3 (three) working days from today."

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud recently shared a letter with all Chief Justices of the High Court. In it, he expressed concern over the misuse of protocol in such a manner that it attracts public criticism and causes inconvenience to the public. His letter highlights the need for the judiciary to be mindful of its role and responsibility in society, ensuring it remains a respected institution.
