Continuing lockup deaths are rocking Tamil Nadu as the DMK government looks the other way. 8 people have died while in police custody since the DMK government took over. DMK had led protests and organized candle vigils when Christian father-son duo Jayaraj and Fennix died due to police torture. Their death was reported even by the English media and gained attention at the national level. But the current lock-up deaths haven’t even been discussed in Tamil media’s prime-time debates.

On June 29, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan reacted to the murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a Hindu tailor from Udaipur, by two Islamists. In a statement, Khan said the deeper disease is being ignored despite the symptoms being visible. He pointed out the rampant radicalization going on inside madrasas and stated, “children studying there are being taught that the punishment for blasphemy is beheading.”

Home Minister Amit Shah’s Office (HMO) today issued a statement that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take over the case of Kanhaiya Lal’s murder.
