"AI in, Emotions out": Suchana Seth, the CEO of artificial intelligence start-up Mindful AI Lab, murdered her 4-year-old son because her ex-husband was to meet him after getting court-granted visitation rights, a situation she didn't like, arrested
In a shocking turn of events that has stunned the nation, 39-year-old Suchana Seth, a celebrated figure in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) from Bengaluru, has been arrested under grave allegations. Seth, who has been recognized among the top '100 brilliant women in AI', is now facing charges for the unimaginable act of killing her four-year-old son in a hotel room.

The details of this tragic incident are both disturbing and heart-wrenching. On the 8th of January, Suchana Seth, who holds the esteemed position of CEO at the innovative company Mindful AI Lab, was apprehended by the Goa Police. This arrest followed the horrific discovery of her young son's death, which occurred under circumstances that are as alarming as they are sorrowful.
Seth, a resident of Bengaluru, was staying with her son in a service apartment in Candolim, Goa. This location, known for its picturesque beauty and serenity, became the backdrop of a harrowing tale that has left many in disbelief. According to reports, the alleged incident unfolded within the confines of this apartment.
The sequence of events as narrated by the authorities paints a chilling picture. It's reported that Seth traveled back to Karnataka in a taxi, but what makes this journey particularly ghastly is the claim that her son's lifeless body was hidden inside a suitcase. The thought of a mother involved in such an act is something that defies understanding and shakes the core of our beliefs about parental love and protection.
Further details reveal that Seth checked into the Hotel Sol Banyan Grande, specifically into service apartment number 404, with her son on the 6th of January. The normalcy of this action contrasts starkly with the subsequent events. After two days, on the morning of the 8th of January, Seth vacated the room. It was at this point that she made an unusual request to the hotel staff – arranging a taxi for her return journey to Bengaluru.
|
The hotel staff, perhaps sensing the peculiarity of traveling such a long distance by road with a young child, suggested that she take a flight instead, as it would be far more convenient. However, Seth was insistent on her choice, adamantly preferring the taxi over a flight. Respecting her decision, the hotel staff facilitated her request and arranged for a local taxi.
In the aftermath of Suchana Seth's departure from the Hotel Sol Banyan Grande in Goa, a disturbing discovery was made that led to a series of rapid and decisive actions by the local authorities. It was during the routine cleaning of Seth's recently vacated service apartment that the hotel staff made a gruesome observation: there were blood stains in the room. This alarming sight prompted the hotel management to take immediate action, and they duly informed the Calangute Police at 11 AM about their finding.
Upon receiving this troubling information, the police launched an investigation to uncover the truth behind these ominous signs. A key piece of evidence came from the hotel’s CCTV footage. It revealed something startling: when Suchana Seth left the hotel, she was alone, without her son. This unusual and concerning detail raised immediate suspicions among the investigating officers.
|
Acting swiftly, Police Inspector Naik, who was handling the case, obtained the taxi driver's number from the hotel staff. He contacted the driver to glean more information about Seth's journey. When Inspector Naik confronted Suchana about the whereabouts of her son, her response further deepened the mystery. She claimed that she had left him with a friend at Fatorda. However, upon checking the address provided by Suchana in Fatorda, the police found that it was fake. This revelation added a sinister twist to the already perplexing case.
Realizing the gravity of the situation, the police made a strategic move. They called the taxi driver again, but this time they spoke in Konkani, a language presumably unfamiliar to Suchana. In their conversation, they instructed the driver to discreetly take the cab to the nearest police station without alerting Suchana of their plan. The taxi driver complied with these instructions and headed towards Aimangala Police Station, all the while keeping Suchana unaware of the unfolding events.
As the taxi reached the police station, the law enforcement officers were well-prepared, thanks to prior communication from PI Naik. The Aimangala police inspector, who had been briefed about the situation, was ready to take the necessary actions. He requested a search of the bag in the taxi, a request that would soon confirm their worst fears. Upon opening the bag, a horrifying scene was unveiled: the dead body of Suchana Seth's four-year-old child was discovered inside.
Understanding the gravity of the situation, Calangute Police in Goa dispatched a team to Karnataka with a clear mission: to take custody of Suchana. Once Suchana is arrested, the plan is to bring her back to Goa under transit remand. This legal process will allow the police to transport Suchana from Karnataka to Goa, ensuring that she is available for further questioning and investigation. The transit remand is a crucial step in the legal proceedings, as it will enable the Goa Police to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of her son.

As the investigation progresses, more chilling details about the possible motive behind this heinous act have emerged. According to the Goa Police, Suchana Seth took the life of her four-year-old son because she did not want her ex-husband, from whom she got divorced in 2020, to meet the child. This revelation sheds light on a possible deep-seated animosity and conflict between Suchana and her ex-husband.
After their divorce, the court had granted Suchana's ex-husband visitation rights to see their son on Sundays. However, it appears that Suchana was vehemently opposed to this arrangement. The report suggests that her motive for committing such an unthinkable crime stemmed from this opposition. She was reportedly driven by the fear that if her ex-husband were to meet their son, he might attempt to gain custody of the child. This fear, according to the report, may have led Suchana to take the most extreme and tragic of measures.
In 2010, Suchana and her then-partner entered into marriage, a union that was marked by the birth of their son in 2019. However, the couple's relationship deteriorated, leading to a divorce in 2020. Following the separation, the court granted the father visitation rights to see his son every Sunday. But, as the investigation reveals, Suchana was vehemently against these meetings.

Suchana took her son to Goa on a Saturday, the day before the scheduled meeting with his father. It was in an apartment in North Goa where the unthinkable happened: Suchana is accused of killing her son, an act that has sent shockwaves through the community and beyond.
Suchana Seth's professional background stands in stark contrast to the horrific allegations she now faces. She is a renowned figure in the AI ethics industry, having founded Mindful AI Lab in 2020. Her expertise and contributions to the field were recognized when she was named among the top 100 women in AI Ethics in 2021. Seth's academic credentials are impressive; she was a Fellow at the Berkman Klein Centre at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts, a position that highlights her deep understanding and knowledge of data science.
Her LinkedIn profile further elucidates her professional journey. Suchana is described as an AI ethics expert and data scientist with over 12 years of experience. She is noted for her skills in mentoring data science teams and scaling machine learning solutions at startups. As the founder of The Mindful AI Lab, a technical consultancy, she has been instrumental in providing customized AI ethics advisory services. The company, as per its official website, is dedicated to auditing AI systems and data practices and co-creating responsible AI roadmaps for organizations at various stages of data maturity.
According to the alumni page of the Berkman Klein Centre, where Seth was once a Fellow, her contributions to the field of technology are significant. She holds patents in text mining and natural language processing, areas that are fundamental to the advancement of modern AI technology. These patents are a testament to her skill and innovation in these complex fields.

Moreover, Suchana's passion extended beyond her technical achievements. She was deeply committed to addressing the gender disparity in the data science community. This commitment is reflected in her involvement with organizations like Women Who Code, where she led data science workshops. Her efforts in this area highlight her dedication not only to her field but also to fostering inclusivity and empowerment among women in technology.
During her time at the Berkman Klein Centre, Suchana's focus was on exploring and implementing ethical practices in machine learning and AI within the industry. This endeavor underscores her understanding of the importance of ethics in technology, an area that is increasingly gaining attention as AI becomes more prevalent in our lives.
Her LinkedIn profile further details her extensive experience in the field of data analytics. Suchana served as a Senior Analytics Consultant at Data Sciences Group, Innovation Labs. This role likely involved her in cutting-edge projects at the intersection of data science and innovation. Additionally, she was a Research Fellow at the Raman Research Institute, further solidifying her position as a respected figure in the scientific community.
The dichotomy of Suchana Seth's life is striking. On one hand, she is a renowned data scientist and an advocate for gender equality in technology, with a record of significant contributions to the field of AI ethics. On the other hand, she faces grave accusations that stand in sharp contrast to her professional achievements. This juxtaposition presents a complex and multifaceted narrative, where her acclaimed professional life is overshadowed by the serious and tragic allegations she now faces.
