Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna Produced in Court After Medical Examination; Bengaluru Court Sends Prajwal Revanna to SIT Custody till June 6

JD(S) suspended MP Prajwal Revanna, who was arrested in connection with alleged sexual harassment cases, was brought to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital in Bengaluru for a medical examination. Following the completion of this medical examination, Mr. Prajwal was taken to the City Civil Court, where he was presented before the 42nd ACMM court judge.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) is expected to request the court to hand over Mr. Prajwal to their custody for further investigation. The Hassan MP was arrested by the SIT on the night of May 30 at Bengaluru Airport.

The SIT has also filed an application in the High Court questioning H.D. Revanna’s bail in the kidnapping case of a woman from KR Nagar, Mysore. According to the SIT, Mr. Revanna should remain in custody until the investigation is concluded. Therefore, the SIT has moved the High Court to cancel the bail granted to Mr. Revanna.

This application will be heard by a High Court bench headed by Justice Krishna S Dixit. The petition filed by Mr. Revanna to cancel this case will also be heard on May 31 in the High Court.

Mr. Revanna was previously arrested in connection with a kidnapping case on April 29. He was granted conditional bail by a special court for people's representatives.

Mr. Prajwal, who was brought to the CID office in Bengaluru after landing at Kempegowda International Airport, is likely to face a probe by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) over allegations of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation. These allegations stem from a complaint filed by a woman who worked in his household.

Suspended JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna, who is facing allegations of sexually abusing several women, was interrogated after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) arrested him as soon as he landed at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru in the early hours of May 31.

The 33-year-old MP, who arrived from Munich, was immediately taken to the CID office for interrogation, sources in the SIT revealed.

The SIT plans to produce him before the Special Court and is likely to seek police custody to conduct further interrogations.

Mr. Prajwal was then taken from the SIT office to the Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital in Bengaluru for a series of medical tests, including checks on his blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and cardiac health. Security at the hospital was tightened due to his arrival.

The SIT is also considering conducting a potency test on Prajwal.

In the first reaction following the arrest, Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwar said that as Mr. Prajwal had promised, he has appeared, and the SIT has taken custody of him.

He stated, "The SIT wanted to send a message that women have been wronged in this episode, and that empowered woman police officers brought him to the SIT office."

The Home Minister also remarked, "There have been statements from Mr. Prajwal that there is a conspiracy against him. I request that this should not be made any more political."

Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwar further emphasized, "SIT is capable of investigating the case in its entirety and let the investigators do the job. I am myself refraining from making any political statement and request everyone to not make a political event out of this."

Mr. Prajwal faces three sexual abuse cases, while his mother has sought anticipatory bail in an alleged kidnapping case.

Though Ms. Bhavani is not an accused in the case, the SIT reportedly wants to investigate her role.

In the same case, Ms. Bhavani's husband and Holenarasipura MLA H.D. Revanna, who is the son of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, was arrested and later released on bail. He is also accused of sexually harassing the cook of his house, who was also allegedly abused by his son, Prajwal.

The 33-year-old Mr. Prajwal, grandson of Deve Gowda and the BJP-JD(S) alliance candidate from the Hassan Lok Sabha segment, is facing charges of sexually abusing many women. He has so far been booked in three cases of sexual assault.

He left for Germany on April 27, a day after Hassan went to polls. A 'Blue Corner Notice' seeking information on his whereabouts was issued by Interpol earlier, following a request by the SIT via the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The MP, terming the cases against him as false and alleging political conspiracy, had said in a video statement issued earlier this week that he had gone into depression.

He had also filed an anticipatory bail plea at the Principal City and Sessions Court for Elected Representatives on May 29, which issued a notice to the SIT to file objections, before posting the hearing for Friday.

The scandal has raised a political storm with the ruling Congress and BJP-JD(S) engaged in a slugfest.

While the Congress government has formed a SIT to probe the cases, the BJP and JD(S) — NDA partners — have demanded that it be handed over to the CBI, and action be taken against those behind the wide circulation of explicit videos.

The cases of sexual abuse came to light after a number of pen drives allegedly containing explicit videos involving Prajwal were reportedly circulated in Hassan, ahead of Lok Sabha polls there on April 26.

Mr. Deve Gowda had recently issued a "stern warning" to Prajwal, asking him to return to the country and face probe into the sexual abuse allegations, while asserting there will be no interference from him or other family members into the enquiry.

The JD(S) supremo had reiterated that his grandson should be given the harshest punishment under the law "if found guilty."

Mr. Prajwal's uncle and former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy too had repeatedly appealed to his nephew to return to the country from abroad and face the probe.

JD(S) has suspended Prajwal Revanna from the party following the allegations.

Bengaluru Court Sends Prajwal Revanna to SIT Custody Till June 6

In a significant legal development, a Bengaluru court on Friday decided to send Janata Dal (Secular) Member of Parliament Prajwal Revanna to 14 days of custody under the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is currently investigating allegations of sexual abuse leveled against him. This decision was made by Judge KN Shivakumar based on a recent application submitted by the SIT.

The case against Prajwal Revanna came to the fore when allegations surfaced involving over 2,900 videos that depict the sexual assault of several women. These videos were widely circulated across various platforms, including social media, bringing the issue to public attention.

Further legal action was taken on April 28 when a first information report (FIR) was registered at the Holenaraseepur town police station in Hassan district. This FIR was filed against both Prajwal Revanna and his father, HD Revanna, encompassing charges under Sections 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 509 (insult to modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The complaint leading to this FIR came directly from one of the alleged victims, adding substantial weight to the accusations.

The SIT handling this sensitive case is led by senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer BK Singh, reflecting the seriousness with which these allegations are being treated.

In the aftermath of these accusations and amid growing political and public outcry, Prajwal Revanna fled to Germany, shortly after the Lok Sabha polls on April 26 in the State. This move added further controversy and urgency to the ongoing investigations and legal proceedings surrounding him.

On his arrival, reported to have returned to India during the early hours of March 31, Prajwal Revanna was arrested upon his arrival.

Just before his return, Prajwal Revanna moved a Bengaluru court for anticipatory bail in the three cases connected to the sexual abuse allegations against him.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has issued a notice to Bhavani Revanna, the mother of suspended JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna, for questioning in a case registered under IPC sections 64(A), 365, 109, 120(B). SIT has asked her to be present at her house in Holenarasipur on June 1.

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said, "Prajwal Revanna came from Germany last night at 12.50 am. He has been arrested, the authorities will do what is legally required to be done. I came from Shimoga yesterday. I haven't spoken to the authorities yet. They do what they have to do according to the law. We have said earlier also that the victims should come before the SIT and tell their problems."

After the arrest of JD(S) suspended MP Prajwal Revanna in an obscene video case today, former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai commented on the ongoing investigation. He stated, "The law will take its course, the SIT probe should be fair and focus on providing justice to the victims. There are many dimensions to this case. We will wait and see what happens." This statement was made in response to inquiries from reporters.

Prajwal Revanna, who was brought to the CID office in Bengaluru after he landed at Kempegowda International Airport, is likely to face a probe by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) over allegations of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation following a complaint by a woman who worked in his household.
