Doctors attacked, emergency ward vandalised, vehicles destroyed: Mob unleashes havoc at R G Kar hospital in Kolkata, police blame social media

In a shocking turn of events that unfolded shortly after midnight on Thursday at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, a mob of 40-50 unidentified individuals stormed into the medical facility, wreaking havoc. This violent outbreak occurred at a site still reeling from the horrific rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor the previous week, further destabilizing the hospital environment. The chaos erupted during the ongoing “Women Reclaim the Night” protest movement, spotlighting a tragic incident involving the brutal attack on a female trainee doctor, which has galvanized the medical community and activists across the region.

The perpetrators targeted specific areas of the hospital, including parts of the emergency ward, in a clear act of retaliation against the doctors who have been vocally demanding justice for their colleague. These doctors, still in shock from the recent tragedy, found themselves under physical assault from the marauding group. Amid heightened security measures implemented following the initial crime, questions are now being asked about the apparent ease with which the assailants infiltrated the hospital premises, circumventing the increased security presence and barricades designed to protect both the medical staff and patients.

"The goons entered the campus and beat up agitating doctors. This was an attempt to break our morale so that we back out from the protest. But such incidents have only strengthened our resolve to fight till the end," expressed one of the besieged doctors during an interview with PTI. His voice conveyed the mixture of determination and distress that has gripped the medical community in the wake of these attacks. Despite the presence of police on the scene, the mob conducted their onslaught, unabated, leading to severe damage not just to property but to the spirit of those gathered in protest.

According to reports from the police, it appears that the group of nearly 40, who were allegedly disguised as protesters, not only vandalized the hospital but also engaged in violent confrontations with law enforcement. This prompted the police to respond with teargas in an effort to control the situation and disperse the aggressive crowd.

In a grim aftermath of the initial assaults, further damage was reported at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, where both police and civilian vehicles were targeted. Specifically, a police vehicle and several two-wheelers parked in the vicinity suffered considerable damage. Adding to the chaos, the violence escalated to physical injuries among some police officers, as stated by one of the officers present at the scene. Compounding the disorder, the police outpost stationed within the hospital premises did not escape the mob’s wrath and was thoroughly ransacked.

Social media platforms became the digital archive of this pandemonium as multiple videos surfaced, capturing the mob in action. These recordings vividly depicted the vandalism across the hospital grounds, including the damaging of police vehicles and the direct attacks on doctors who were present during the incident. The violence coincided ominously with public demonstrations in West Bengal, where protestors marched to "reclaim the night," advocating for women's safety in public spaces, making the irony of the situation painfully apparent.

Despite the robust police force deployed at the hospital, the mob executed their acts of vandalism without deterrence, engaging in aggressive stone pelting as part of their rampage. Reports indicated that the mob initially gathered outside before abruptly storming the hospital. They forced their way into the emergency ward, where they proceeded to demolish furniture and decimate medicine stocks, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

In response to the escalating violence, the police were compelled to adopt more forceful measures to restore order. They resorted to lathi-charge tactics followed by firing tear gas shells in a desperate bid to disperse the relentless mob. Amidst this turmoil, several police personnel, who were stationed to guard the protest site and the hospital, sustained injuries from brickbats hurled by the aggressors.

The situation at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital revealed a troubling scenario, wherein the response from law enforcement raised serious concerns about their effectiveness and preparedness. Despite assurances from a senior officer of Kolkata Police, who claimed, "We have an adequate number of personnel posted outside the hospital, and they have been instructed to tackle the situation accordingly," as reported by PTI, the events that unfolded painted a starkly different picture.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal's arrival at the site around 2 am could have been a turning point, yet his statements did little to reassure the public or address the gravity of the failure in preventing the chaos. After surveying the damage, Commissioner Goyal told the press, "We are looking into the matter." He then quickly shifted focus to criticize the media, asserting that a "malicious media campaign" had exacerbated the tensions. "What the police have not done to crack this case? But there has been a malicious media campaign that has been going on," he claimed. This deflection onto the media seemed to minimize the apparent lapses in police action and preparedness that allowed the situation to escalate.

The physical damage to the hospital was extensive, with the mob wreaking havoc on the Emergency ward, nursing station, medicine store, and a section of the Out Patients Department (OPD) at the north Kolkata facility. Police reports confirm that the attackers, armed with sticks, bricks, and rods, also destroyed several CCTV cameras, crucial for maintaining hospital security and documenting the events. Moreover, the mob vandalized a stage where junior doctors had been protesting since August 9, symbolizing a direct assault on the voices of those demanding justice and safer working conditions.

A senior doctor at the hospital, Subhendu Mullick, provided a harrowing account to The Indian Express, illustrating the severity of the situation and the inadequate response by the police. “A mob of miscreants entered the hospital. The agitating doctors were attacked and had to flee. They even tried to enter the building where the junior doctor was raped and murdered. Police stood as mute spectators,” Dr. Mullick recounted. This testimony highlights a disturbing level of negligence and possible complicity by the police, who failed to act decisively to protect the hospital staff and property from the marauding mob.

The incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which lasted approximately an hour, left a significant mark on both the physical premises and the people involved. The protest that was meant to be a peaceful demand for justice turned violent, and the participants were left in a state of fear and helplessness. A young woman, speaking to Republic Bangla, captured the relentless nature of the assault: “They are beating us continuously. They will beat us. We came here for the protests.”

Aniket Maity, a junior doctor at the hospital, provided a firsthand account of the events leading up to the violence. He noted the ominous gathering of troublemakers outside the hospital well before the chaos ensued. "We could see the troublemakers assembling outside the hospital much before the attack started and requested the police to take steps but they did nothing. When the rampage started the policemen rushed inside the hospital premises to take shelter,” Maity stated, highlighting a critical lapse in police response.

Amidst the fallout, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal pointed fingers at digital media platforms, accusing them of fueling the violence through their coverage. “Unfounded information and false allegations were being constantly spread on social media. This led to the attack. I am saying as commissioner of police that no effort was made at any level to shield anyone. We promptly arrested the prime suspect. We said there could be others and investigations were on. But there was a continuous effort to malign the police,” Goyal claimed. His defense suggested a defensive stance from the police force, amidst growing public scrutiny over their handling of the situation.

Adding a political dimension to the discussion, Trinamool Congress general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee weighed in on the crisis. He revealed his communication with Commissioner Goyal, emphasizing the urgency of bringing the perpetrators to justice. Banerjee stated that he had spoken to Goyal, urging him to ensure that those responsible for the violence are identified, held accountable, and face the law within the next 24 hours, regardless of their political affiliations. He condemned the severe acts of hooliganism and vandalism at the hospital, describing them as "exceeding all acceptable limits."

Furthermore, Banerjee supported the cause of the protesting doctors, acknowledging the legitimacy of their concerns. He affirmed, “The demands of the protesting doctors are fair and justified, and stressed that their safety and security should be a top priority for the government.”

BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has directly implicated the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and its leader, Mamata Banerjee, in the vandalism. Adhikari charged that the disturbance was orchestrated by "TMC goons" sent by Mamata Banerjee herself. He articulated that Banerjee manipulated the scenario by planting her supporters within an apolitical protest, effectively camouflaging them as ordinary protestors to execute the vandalism seamlessly.

Adhikari was vocal in his critique of Banerjee, insinuating a calculated ploy on her part, designed to remain undetected. He suggested that the West Bengal Chief Minister underestimated the perceptiveness of the public and other political figures in recognizing the orchestration behind the chaos. "Mamata Banerjee has sent her TMC goons to the apolitical Protest Rally near RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. She thinks that she is the most shrewd person in the whole world and people won’t be able to figure out the cunning plan that her goons appearing as protestors would mix with the crowd and carry out vandalism inside the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital,” Adhikari stated, portraying Banerjee as believing in her own invincibility in political maneuvering.

Further deepening his allegations, Adhikari claimed that the police, rather than serving as enforcers of law and order, facilitated the disruption. According to him, the police provided 'safe passage' for the miscreants, either by fleeing the scene or deliberately turning a blind eye, thus allowing the vandals unfettered access to critical areas of the hospital. “They were given safe passage by the Police, who either ran away or looked the other way so that these lumpens would enter the hospital premises and destroy areas containing crucial evidence so that it doesn’t get picked up by the CBI,” he elaborated.

Adhikari underscored the incompetency of the perpetrators, who, despite their intentions to remain incognito, inadvertently revealed their affiliations, particularly when they vandalized the Dharna Manch where resident doctors, postgraduate trainees (PGTs), and interns had been staging protests. “As they were dumb TMC hooligans they couldn’t execute the plan well and revealed their identity when they vandalised the Dharna Manch of the Resident Doctors, PGTs & Internees,” he pointed out, highlighting a botched attempt at stealth that backfired, exposing the alleged political motives behind the attack.

The palpable outrage following the egregious incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has not only gripped Kolkata but has also resonated throughout West Bengal, galvanizing massive gatherings of women at the hospital and extending the protests to other areas of the state. The collective outcry for justice has become a focal point of societal response to the violence and the tragic rape that preceded it. Women, in particular, have been vocal in their demands for justice, highlighting a pervasive sense of urgency and dissatisfaction with the current proceedings.

Mrs. Barnali Saha, a protester who joined the demonstrations at Jadavpur 8B More with her daughter, voiced a poignant critique of the police response. “Till now 4-5 days have passed since the incident took place, but we are not happy with the police investigation,” she stated, encapsulating the growing disillusionment with the investigatory efforts. This sentiment was visually and vocally supported by hundreds of women who convened with placards, symbolizing their solidarity and the communal demand for justice for the victim.

Amidst these public demonstrations, the political narrative continued to unfold with BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari once again accusing the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of orchestrating the attack, thereby implying a deep-seated political manipulation aimed at stifling dissent or altering public perception. This accusation adds another layer of complexity and mistrust towards the governmental handling of the situation.

In terms of legal proceedings, Bengali media have reported that four individuals have been detained in connection to the incident, marking a slow but ongoing progression in the response to the public's call for accountability. However, the effectiveness and transparency of these actions remain under scrutiny by the public and critics alike, who are closely watching the government's and police force's handling of this sensitive and significant matter.

The response from the government and the police in West Bengal, particularly under the leadership of CM Mamata Banerjee, has drawn significant criticism for perceived inadequacies and potential political interference. This situation not only tests the efficacy and integrity of local governance but also reflects on the broader issues of justice and security in the region. As the community seeks closure and justice through legal and civic action, the actions taken in the coming days will be critical in shaping public trust and governmental legitimacy in West Bengal.
