8 innocent children died when a Rajasthan school roof collapsed—students had warned the Education Minister, but no one listened, and ₹4.28Cr meant for repairs lay buried in government files, untouched, while only 5 teachers took the fall

A horrifying tragedy unfolded in Piplodi village of Manoharthana block, nestled within Rajasthan’s Jhalawar district, as the roof of a government school collapsed, leading to the deaths of young schoolchildren and leaving several others critically injured. The heartbreaking incident occurred early in the day when the school was preparing for its regular morning activities.

According to the latest reports, “8 children have been declared dead. 28 children have been injured and many of them are critical.” The accident took place when 35 students of Class 7 were inside the classroom. As fate would have it, that room turned into a death trap. With torrential rains pouring outside, the children had been told to remain indoors instead of stepping out for the morning assembly—a decision that proved catastrophic.
As the structure gave way, the roof crashed down directly onto the students, burying almost the entire class in thick layers of concrete and stone. Local villagers, reacting with urgency and desperation, ran to the school and began pulling the children out with bare hands before ambulances could arrive. The injured children were rushed to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately, several succumbed to their injuries within moments of reaching.
Ajay Singh Rathod, the District Collector of Jhalawar, stated that “the Department of Education has standing instructions to demolish any school buildings that are dilapidated or at risk of collapse. However, the village school in Piplodi was not in the list.” This critical exclusion might have played a pivotal role in the unfolding of the tragedy.
Acting quickly after the incident, the local administration sent bulldozers to demolish the entire school building, presumably to prevent further accidents. Meanwhile, five teachers who were not present at the time of the collapse have been suspended—a move that has raised more questions than answers.
Most shocking of all, it has come to light that ₹4.28 crores had already been sanctioned for repair and reconstruction works at the school. However, “the money never came. It was stuck in the official documentation in the Ministry of Finance in Rajasthan.” This bureaucratic delay proved fatal. Despite warnings and orders to fix dilapidated school buildings before the monsoon, Education Director Sitaram Jat confirmed that the repair work had not been done.
Ignored Warnings: Students Noticed Cracks, Teachers Paid No Heed
Even more disturbing are the revelations from students who survived the collapse. Just hours after the tragic event, two of them spoke out, revealing they had noticed stones falling from the classroom ceiling. They did what children are taught to do—they reported it to their teacher. But instead of action, they were met with indifference.
“While we were sitting inside the classroom, stones started falling from the roof. Immediately, we informed our teacher, but what we said was ignored. Later, the roof collapsed,” the two students told ANI.
The structure that failed housed Classes 6 and 7, as confirmed by police. When it gave way, about 35 students were trapped beneath. The incident occurred just before the children were to gather for morning prayers—a timing that possibly spared some but doomed others.
Despite visible signs of deterioration, no preventive action was taken. This disregard has now become the centre of a massive public outrage.

Nine Children Battling for Life in ICU, Locals Slam Administrative Negligence
In the aftermath of the disaster, a heartbreaking rescue effort unfolded. Parents, teachers, and locals worked frantically, lifting heavy stones and concrete slabs, driven by panic and love to pull the children out. The scene was chaotic—children crying, adults shouting, and desperate attempts to save lives amid rubble.
“Seven children have died so far,” confirmed Nand Kishore Verma, SHO of Manoharthana police station, located about 80 km from the district headquarters, speaking to PTI.
A doctor from the Jhalawar hospital added that “nine of the injured children were now admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).” Their condition remains critical, and families are clinging to hope as medical staff continue their efforts.
Adding another layer of failure, locals revealed that they had warned officials earlier. “Some of the locals said that they had informed the tehsildar and sub-divisional magistrate about the condition of the school building, but no action was taken.” A resident named Balkishan stood witness to the entire horror, telling reporters: “This happened due to negligence of the administration.”
He recounted that he was sitting near the school when he heard a loud, terrifying sound. As he turned, he saw the cloud of dust and heard the anguished screams of children. “I, along with others present there, immediately rushed to the building and started removing slabs and stones in order to rescue children. There was chaos. Children were crying, and everyone was making efforts to pull them out. Many of us rushed the injured students to the health centre,” he said, his voice heavy with emotion.
Jhalawar Collector Ajay Singh acknowledged the mistake, reiterating that the school building had not been listed as unsafe. He stated, “I will get it investigated and action will be taken against whoever is found guilty.”
Another local shared that children were rescued in private vehicles, long before the administration even reached the scene. This shocking lack of preparedness and urgency is now the centre of growing public outrage and media scrutiny.

The Rajasthan state government has also stepped up in response to the tragedy. Rajasthan Education Minister Madan Dilawar expressed his deep condolences and confirmed that the administration will leave no stone unturned to investigate the root cause of the collapse.
He stated, “A very unfortunate incident occurred in Piplodi village, where the roof of a school collapsed. I have instructed the district collector and education officers to ensure the best possible treatment for the injured. Officials are already on the ground.”
His remarks followed growing outrage among locals and the public at large, who have blamed administrative lapses for the avoidable deaths of eight children. The minister assured that immediate support was being arranged for the injured and their families.
Further, he confirmed that a high-level probe would be launched to determine how such a disaster occurred despite prior warnings and sanctioned funds. At the same time, steps are being taken to inspect other government school buildings in the region, aiming to avoid another similar tragedy.
The government’s swift response in deploying health personnel, education officers, and emergency support teams to Piplodi village indicates that the scale of the disaster has been fully acknowledged.
