"मोहब्बत की दुकान": Rahul Gandhi promises to join the gym of Mohammad Deepak, the man who mocked Pahalgam victims and has links to Dubai, following a series of communal tensions and legal disputes in Uttarakhand

In a move that has sparked significant conversation across the national political landscape, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, held a personal meeting with Mohammad Deepak on February 23rd. Deepak, a gym trainer from Kotdwar, Uttarakhand, recently became a focal point of national attention following a series of communal disputes and legal challenges that have severely impacted his professional life.
|
According to Deepak, the meeting was deeply personal. He stated that the senior Congress leader went out of his way to invite him and even took the time to speak directly with his family members. During their conversation, Gandhi reportedly offered strong words of reassurance regarding the recent controversies in Uttarakhand. Mohammad Deepak shared that the politician told him he had "done nothing wrong" and insisted that "he should not be afraid."
Furthermore, Gandhi expressed a specific desire to support Deepak’s business directly. He voiced an "intention to visit Kotdwar and take membership at his gym," a gesture that Mohammad Deepak described as a significant "matter of pride for him."

Financial Strain Following the Kotdwar Dispute
The backdrop of this meeting is a sharp decline in Mohammad Deepak’s livelihood. Operating out of rented premises in Kotdwar, the trainer explained that the recent public friction has decimated his client base. Before the incident, his facility was a bustling hub where "around 150 members trained at his facility daily." However, in the wake of the controversy, those numbers have plummeted, leaving him with only "12 to 15 visitors daily."
|
The roots of this decline trace back to an incident on January 26th. Reports indicate that members of the Bajrang Dal approached the owner of a local shop, "Ahmed’s Baba School Dress and Matching Centre," demanding a name change. When the shopkeeper refused, a heated argument began. Mohammad Deepak chose to intervene in the matter, taking the side of the shop owner.
This intervention led to legal consequences. Pauri Garhwal SSP Sarvesh Panwar confirmed that "complaints were received from both sides and FIRs were registered." The police also took "suo motu cognisance after a road was blocked near Deepak’s premises," with officials issuing stern warnings that strict action would be taken against those disrupting public order. Local reporting on these legal proceedings can be found through updates from the Pauri Garhwal Police.

Investigation into Past Conduct and Social Media History
While Gandhi has framed the trainer as a figure representing his "Mohabbat Ki Dukaan" (Shop of Love) initiative, investigations by reporting outlets have highlighted a more complex and controversial history. The investigation suggests that Deepak has maintained consistent "links to a Dubai-based businessman, Chand Maula Baksh," who has been responsible for regularly organizing bodybuilding events for him.
Deepak’s digital footprint has also come under heavy scrutiny. During the recent unrest, a video surfaced on social media where he was recorded stating that "there is immense power in the name 'Mohammad'." More concerning to critics are posts attributed to him regarding the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam in April 2025. In one viral post, he reportedly used a derogatory slur, calling those who identified the attackers as Muslims "chutti@". In a follow-up comment on that same thread, he made a highly provocative and graphic statement: "if the terrorists took off the pants of Hindu men before killing them, then what did they take off the women?"
|
While the political narrative presents him as a victim of local aggression, these past statements and his "one-sided pro-Islamist narrative" continue to fuel a heated debate regarding the nature of his public influence and the implications of the high-profile support he has received.
