"ओ री चिरईया, नन्ही सी चिड़िया": A 19-year-old SIDCUL worker was kidnapped on Bhurarani Road, gang-raped in a forest, and thrown into bushes near Metropolis underpass, after which suspects Gurbaz and 2 others were caught in a police encounter

The sequence of events began late Saturday night, at approximately 11:30 PM. The 19-year-old victim—a migrant worker originally from the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand and currently employed at a manufacturing firm in the SIDCUL industrial complex in Rudrapur—had spent part of the day in Gadarpur with a female friend and two male companions.

As the group of four was returning toward Rudrapur along Bhurarani Road, three men riding a single motorcycle intercepted them near the Gadarpur border area. The assailants confronted the four friends, started a violent scuffle, and physically threatened and assaulted them. Forcing the four friends under their physical control, the three armed suspects began forcibly transporting them toward an isolated forest tract accessible via the Kashipur flyover.
En route to the forested corridor, as the motorcycle slowed over rough terrain, the victim's female friend and one male companion took a desperate risk, jumping off the moving vehicle into the dark. However, the assailants had already forcibly seized their mobile phones, leaving the escaped duo initially unable to contact emergency services or call for help.
Further inside the treeline, the attackers released the second male companion, but seized his motorcycle and kept the 19-year-old woman trapped under their control.
Deep within the dense forest expanse of Gadarpur, the three men took turns gang-raping the young woman. Once the assault was complete, the attackers placed her injured body back on the vehicle and transported her to the unlit fringe of the Chhatrapur-Bhurarani route. There, behind the under-construction Metropolis railway underpass, they threw her into dense roadside bushes and fled the scene.

Discovery, Emergency Hospitalization, and Investigation Launch
Once the victim's friend managed to reach safety, she immediately alerted law enforcement authorities about the abduction. Based on the friend's account and initial descriptions, search parties were dispatched across the transition zones between Gadarpur, SIDCUL, and Bhurarani.
At dawn on Sunday morning, search teams located the 19-year-old victim dumped in thick, thorny bushes behind the under-construction Metropolis railway underpass in Bhurarani. She was found in a semi-conscious, severely injured, and distressed state.
| Phase | Event & Investigative Action |
| Initial Discovery | Victim found semi-conscious in bushes at Metropolis underpass, Bhurarani |
| Emergency Medical | Immediately evacuated to district hospital for stabilization and forensic medical exam |
| FIR Registration | Formal case registered against 3 unknown assailants based on friend's written complaint (tahrir) |
| Specialized Units | SOG (Special Operations Group), forensic, and technical teams mobilized |
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Ganpati directed the deployment of specialized units, including the district's Special Operations Group (SOG), technical intelligence, and forensic analysts. Investigators scanned hours of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage across SIDCUL, Bhurarani Road, Gadarpur, and nearby interstate transit corridors leading into Uttar Pradesh. Technical surveillance and CCTV mapping eventually tracked the suspects' movements to the Bagwada area.

Police Action: Bagwada Shootout and Arrest of the Accused
Acting under instructions from Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami mandating zero tolerance for violent crimes against women, SSP Ajay Ganpati ordered intensive check-posts across Udham Singh Nagar district.
Late Monday night, operational teams stationed in the Bagwada Police Chowki jurisdiction intercepted three suspects riding a motorcycle. Realizing they were surrounded, the riders drew country-made handguns and opened fire on the police detail.
Police officers returned fire in self-defense. In the retaliatory firefight, a police bullet struck the primary suspect, Gurbaz alias Manu, in the leg, disabling him on the spot. Police officers immediately tackled and disarmed his two accomplices, Joga Singh and Ravinder. Forensic search procedures at the Bagwada shootout site resulted in the recovery of illegal pistols, unspent live cartridges, and the stolen motorcycle.
| Suspect Profile | Personal Details & Arrest Summary |
| Gurbaz alias Manu | Son of Pritam Singh, resident of Kalkatti village, Gadarpur, Uttarakhand. Main accused; sustained gunshot wound to leg during firefight |
| Joga Singh | Son of Ranjit Singh, resident of Ajjuwala, Milak Khanam, Rampur, Uttar Pradesh. Arrested at Bagwada shootout site |
| Ravinder | Son of Phumman Singh, resident of Ajjuwala, Milak Khanam, Rampur, Uttar Pradesh. Arrested at Bagwada shootout site |

Hospital Interrogation and Tuesday Morning Vigilante Outburst
The wounded main accused, Gurbaz alias Manu, was admitted to the high-security ward of Rudrapur District Hospital under armed police guard. SSP Ajay Ganpati visited the hospital ward to conduct a direct bedside interrogation. Following the session, SSP Ganpati instructed investigation lead Circle Officer (CO) Vibhav Saini to compile forensic evidence rapidly and ensure a chargesheet is filed without delay.
On Tuesday morning, an armed police detail brought all three accused back to the Metropolis underpass crime scene for mandatory judicial scene reconstruction.
As police vehicles came to a halt near the under-construction railway underpass, the three handcuffed suspects made a break for freedom, attempting to run into the surrounding brushwood. Local residents, who had gathered near the site as news of the arrival spread, spotted the fleeing suspects. The crowd pursued the men, tackled them to the ground, and beat them severely in an outburst of retributive anger.
Police officers intervened, physically shielding the bleeding suspects from the crowd. Law enforcement successfully extracted the three men, returned them to police transport, and brought them back into high-security custody.

Structural Factors and Legal Outlook
This case highlights persistent security challenges along the border zones of industrial towns like Rudrapur. SIDCUL draws thousands of young migrant workers, particularly women from Garhwal and Kumaon, to work in manufacturing units.
However, unlit transit corridors, unmonitored forest paths near flyovers, and stalled infrastructure projects—such as the Metropolis railway underpass—create dangerous blind spots. Furthermore, the proximity between Udham Singh Nagar (Uttarakhand) and Rampur (Uttar Pradesh) allows criminal mobility across state borders, facilitated by the availability of unlicensed handguns (kattas).
State prosecutors are preparing an expedited chargesheet. Police leadership confirmed that medical examination results, forest and underpass forensic evidence, ballistics reports from the Bagwada shootout, and CCTV trail mapping will form the foundation of the state's prosecution in fast-track court.
