"नमस्ते सदा वत्सले मातृभूमे": Over 100 Canadian Hindu groups rally for RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's tour, asking Prime Minister Mark Carney to uphold due process and reject pressure from NDP MPs seeking to bar the prominent leader from Canada

A broad coalition of more than 100 Canadian Hindu institutions and civil liberties organizations has formally called upon Prime Minister Mark Carney's administration to permit Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Sarsanghchalak Dr. Mohan Bhagwat to enter Canada, demanding that federal authorities dismiss political efforts seeking to deem him inadmissible.
|
The joint coalition submitted an extensive representation directly to Prime Minister Carney, Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree, Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab, and Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, urging that any formal determination regarding entry clearance be grounded strictly in objective legal standards and verified facts rather than external political lobbying.
The proactive intervention comes in response to public calls led by New Democratic Party (NDP) Members of Parliament Jenny Kwan and Heather McPherson, alongside several Islamist and pro-Khalistani activist groups, who have lobbied federal departments to bar Bhagwat from visiting Canada, designate him as inadmissible under national entry provisions, and impose a blanket ban on the RSS organization.
Highlighting the cultural relevance of the visit, the signatory organizations underscored that Bhagwat's North American itinerary holds deep significance for the country’s growing diaspora:
“We, the undersigned representatives of more than 101+ Canadian organisations and civil liberties groups, write to express our support for the proposed visit of Dr Mohan Bhagwat, Sarsanghchalak (chief) of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), to Canada. The proposed visit is of considerable interest to Canada’s Hindu community, including more than one million Canadians of Hindu heritage.”
Characterizing the RSS as an established Indian socio-cultural organization recognized globally for its educational initiatives, community outreach programs, cultural activities, and volunteer disaster relief projects, the coalition expressed profound concern regarding parliamentary interventions seeking to restrict his travel:
“We are therefore concerned by recent calls from NDP MPs Jenny Kwan and Heather McPherson, along with several organisations, urging the Government of Canada to prevent Bhagwat from entering Canada and to characterise him as inadmissible.”
The coalition firmly contested the specific charges leveled by MPs Kwan and McPherson—which alleged historical hate speech, advocacy of violence targeting minority populations, systematic intimidation, and associations with illicit or extremist entities—noting that severe accusations demand rigorous substantiation. The submission underlined:
“Serious allegations require credible evidence.”
|
Expanding on this principle, the submission noted that unsubstantiated claims cannot substitute for verified assessments in legal and immigration matters:
“These are exceptionally serious allegations. They should not be treated as political rhetoric or established as fact without clear, credible and independently verifiable evidence.”
The letter urged Canadian immigration and intelligence bodies to assess all materials strictly through statutory administrative frameworks rather than partisan discourse. Signatories also refuted assertions that Bhagwat’s presence poses a threat to domestic public order, asking opponents to present any factual documentation demonstrating that either he or the RSS has ever contributed to unrest on Canadian soil:
“Canada’s immigration and public safety decisions must be based on established law, credible evidence and due process, not speculation and political rhetoric.”
Addressing the broader democratic implications of arbitrarily barring overseas cultural figures, the joint statement affirmed:
“Political disagreement and peaceful protest are legitimate. Criticism of religious, cultural or political leaders is also legitimate. But preventing a visiting leader from entering Canada based on allegations that have not been demonstrated with credible evidence would raise serious concerns about pluralism and fairness.”
The signatories warned that singling out a major Hindu spiritual and cultural figure without demonstrable proof sends an alienating signal to law-abiding citizens, creating an impression of unequal administrative treatment:
“Canada’s multiculturalism is founded on the principle that people of different faiths and cultural traditions can participate fully in public life. Hindus, like Canadians of every other religious or non-religious background, are entitled to dignity, security, freedom of expression, freedom of religion, peaceful association and equality before the law.”
|
The coalition highlighted growing anxieties within the community that persistent efforts to ban Bhagwat reflect broader elements of anti-Hindu bias and prejudice, adding that individual political figures do not speak for the collective whole of Canadian society or its Hindu diaspora:
“Bhagwat’s emphasis has always been social harmony, cultural identity, community service and engagement across communities. We therefore urge political leaders and community organisations to exercise responsibility in their public statements and avoid rhetoric that could deepen divisions among Canada’s diverse communities.”
In its final appeal, the coalition petitioned the federal government to remain committed to democratic norms and constitutional protections:
“Canada needs more dialogue, not division; more evidence, not allegations; more due process, not political pressure; and more respect for its multicultural mosaic, not efforts that could silence one community’s legitimate right to welcome its own cultural and spiritual leaders. We respectfully request that the Government of Canada uphold the principles of equality, pluralism, freedom of expression, freedom of religion, peaceful association and due process in considering Dr Mohan Bhagwat’s proposed visit.”
The unified initiative encompasses major community pillars, including the Canada India Foundation, Canadian Arya Samaj, Brampton Hindu Society, Hindu Society of Canada, Hindu Mission of Canada, Hindu Sabha Temple, Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, and Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) Canada, alongside dozens of regional cultural organizations and mandir boards across the provinces.
This domestic representation arrives amid a wider, coordinated international campaign spanning the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, where networks of activist groups, political figures, and separatists have mobilized online petitions, parliamentary submissions, and street demonstrations aimed at stopping Bhagwat’s three-nation tour.
