"दुनिया को रखें ठेंगे पे भैया": From an emotional donation appeal to shocking charges of fraud, this is how Jay Singh Rathore and a forged medical crowdfunding campaign at Dr Shroff Eye Centre completely unraveled before thousands on live X Spaces

What initially began as a deeply touching plea by an elder brother seeking to save his ailing little sister captured hearts and purses across social media, only to disintegrate into an intense online controversy over alleged digital fraud. Operating under the profile name Ajayveer (Jay) Singh Rathore, an online user stepped into the public square claiming that his 12-year-old sister was facing the imminent danger of losing her vision. Desperate for assistance, he asked regular people for modest monetary contributions so that his family could afford her critical medical care.
|
The plea was originally published on the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, 21st September. The response was immediate and overwhelming. In less than twenty-four hours after making the request, Rathore received more than Rs 1.5 lakh from benevolent strangers across the internet. Shortly after hitting this milestone, he went ahead and removed his payment details, telling the public that his family had actually received more money than was required.
However, the heartwarming tale rapidly shifted toward suspicion when observant netizens noticed troubling red flags in the medical paperwork attached to the post. The narrative took a drastic twist when the specialized facility named in the paperwork, Shroff Eye Centre, issued an urgent public warning informing everyone that someone had misused its official letterheads to fabricate a patient profile, a prescription, and a treatment cost estimate. Following this dramatic development, the dialogue pivoted from celebratory charitable posts into fiery, hours-long confrontation sessions on X Spaces, where thousands gathered to cross-examine Jay directly.

The Chronology of the Fundraiser
In his introductory message, which has now been wiped from the platform, Jay introduced himself as a helpless 16-year-old boy trying his best to secure medical care for his younger sibling. He recounted that her eyesight had begun to deteriorate noticeably a few months back. Alarmed by this development, his family took her to Dr Shroff’s Eye Hospital located in New Delhi.
According to his narrative, medical specialists examined the child and diagnosed her with both glaucoma and a vitreous haemorrhage, a severe internal eye bleeding condition that was progressively stealing her sight. Jay stated that his family had already poured upwards of Rs 2.5 lakh into her treatments and consultations, but they were now faced with an upcoming surgical intervention that demanded an additional Rs 1.2 lakh. To establish credibility, he uploaded photographs of medical documents alongside an Aadhaar card featuring a young child born in the year 2013.
Explaining the family's financial shortfall, Jay wrote:
“Between our savings and help from relatives, we have managed to arrange Rs 50,000. We are still short by approximately Rs 73,000. I have attached the medical reports, hospital bills, cost estimate and appointment documents so that people can verify the situation. Even Rs 10 or Rs 20 from people who are comfortable helping would mean a lot to us. If you cannot contribute, simply sharing the post may help us reach someone who can.”
He went on to describe a somber personal background, noting that he and his little sister were living under the care of their father and grandmother after their mother tragically succumbed to illness during the COVID-19 pandemic. He highlighted their fragile financial condition by clarifying that his father, an agricultural laborer working hard out in the fields, was the household's sole breadwinner.
The internet responded with spontaneous generosity. In just a few hours, contributions surged to a total of Rs 1,58,282. Shortly thereafter, Jay uploaded an update showing a screenshot of the raised funds to express his gratitude. He urged donors to halt their contributions because the collection had exceeded their requirements, subsequently wiping away all posts showing his bank and UPI credentials while expressing his appreciation:
“I’m genuinely overwhelmed by your kindness.”

Inconsistencies Surface as the Eye Hospital Sounds the Alarm
It was not long before the initial wave of goodwill turned into sharp skepticism. Donors and vigilant online observers began analyzing the paperwork and spotted glaring discrepancies across the shared medical records and prescriptions. Several contributors called the hospital directly, only to discover that the administration had no record of any registered patient matching his sister's name.
Accusations of deception began mounting rapidly. Confronting him publicly on the platform, one user remarked:
“We trusted you, but the hospital says the patient with this ID has some other name, not Shrishti Rathore.”
Jay attempted to push back against the allegations, maintaining that he had not deceived anyone and insisted that every single rupee remained reserved strictly for a genuine medical crisis. In his defense, he pleaded:
“Jail me, guys, if I did wrong,”
He begged people not to accuse him unfairly, labeling his critics as “so mean” and complaining that people refused to hear his side of the story. He continued to assert that he had never deceived anyone or misspent any money, reiterating that a medical emergency was genuinely underway.
The definitive blow to his narrative occurred when Shroff Eye Centre formally stepped in. Taking to its official Instagram account, the medical institution posted a story cautioning the public against fraudulent paperwork being circulated under its brand:
“Alert. It has come to our knowledge that some person/s has created a fake patient, prescription and estimate sheet on our letterheads and is asking NGOs (non-governmental organisations)and individuals on WhatsApp for help. Please be aware and share to prevent people from becoming victims of this deception.”

Unfolding Developments and Conflicting Defenses
As public outrage reached a boiling point, Jay took part in live X Spaces discussions, including a Marathon four-hour session where community members confronted him directly about the fraudulent paperwork and missing funds. Cornered by questioning, he maintained that he never intended to defraud anyone. However, in a stark contradiction to his initial plea, he altered his narrative, claiming that the person who was sick and needed urgent financial assistance was actually his father, not his sister. He claimed he had used a young girl’s identity solely to widen the appeal and maximize the reach of the tweet.
In another baffling remark during these conversations, Jay offered a conflicting explanation, stating that he had done it “for fun.” When listeners demanded to know how he managed to forge official hospital stationery and substitute the true patient's name with his sister's name, he deflected the inquiries, remarking that investigating how it happened was the police’s job.
As the scrutiny intensified and users systematically dismantled his explanations, Jay broke down in tears on the live audio call. Despite his tears, listeners continued to grill him on the legitimacy of the fundraiser and demanded a clear accounting of the money. Participants pointed out that he had initially handled the matter with casual flippancy, only becoming emotional when the situation spiraled completely out of his control. Furthermore, digital observers noted that the photograph of the little girl circulated in the original appeal bore the telltale signs of being generated by artificial intelligence.
Donors on the call mobilized to demand their money back, feeding Jay their personal UPI details and instructing him to initiate prompt refunds. In an effort to prove his compliance, he circulated several payment confirmation screenshots, claiming he had already started returning funds to contributors. An account screenshot shared publicly by another user indicated that the balance in his account had dropped from the original collection of Rs 1,58,282.58 down to Rs 1,37,893.58.

Facing mounting pressure, Jay eventually published a written apology acknowledging his wrongdoing:
“I understand that what I did was wrong. There are a few things I could explain, but I don’t think discussing them here would change anything. What matters is that I take responsibility for my actions.”
He followed this with a firm assurance of complete reimbursement:
“Everyone will get their money back, every last dime. At the moment, my bank account is under a 24-hour restriction. As soon as that restriction is lifted, I will start repaying everyone.”
He attempted to frame his behavior as a lapse in judgment, claiming he was “naive” and “didn’t fully understand the consequences of what I was doing.”
Pleading for clemency from an angry internet, he insisted that he had learned a bitter lesson:
“and I’ve genuinely realised my mistake. I’ve never done anything like this in my life before. I sincerely ask you to forgive me and consider this my first and last mistake. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”
He asked users to stop labeling him a scammer, reiterating his commitment that every rupee would be refunded. While conceding that the public backlash was justified, he added that heavy reporting had led to his account being restricted. During his final appearance in an X Space around 3:30 am on 23rd September, Jay pledged that he would return later that morning to clarify the discrepancies in his original post and provide a transparent accounting of the raised funds.

The controversy also swept up other accounts. A user known on the platform as Ranisa, who had actively boosted and amplified Jay’s initial donation appeal, found herself accused of being complicit in the alleged scheme. She defended herself by pushing back against the allegations:
“I live in Madhya Pradesh, whereas he was from Uttar Pradesh. I only liked, commented on, and quoted his post because he is a Rathore. I did not contribute any money to him.”
She emphasized her lack of financial involvement by adding:
“Find even one tweet on my timeline where I have ever asked anyone to donate to him or to anyone at all. If I have ever asked anyone to donate even one rupee, I will delete my Twitter account.”
In a series of posts, she maintained that she had no personal ties to Jay and had only acted out of a desire to assist a perceived member of her community. She challenged her accusers to register a formal police complaint against her so that law enforcement agencies could carry out an independent investigation and clear her name.
Following the exposure of the fabricated documents, the incident has evolved into a major trending discussion across social networks, reigniting debates around digital accountability, verification standards in online crowdfunding, and how easily digital goodwill can be exploited.
