Dubious Instagram Handle Exploited to Claim Flydubai Pilot Smit Machchhar Backs Rahul Gandhi: Page Set Up in July, Shifted Handle 9 Times

Barely 24 hours after Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar became widely recognized as the central hero in the harrowing mid-air crisis aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073, an unusual social media campaign began gathering steam online.

Rather than allowing public attention to remain focused on the pilot’s decisive actions—fighting back after being wounded inside his own cockpit and averting an imminent disaster that threatened the lives of 174 people on board—an effort emerged among Congress IT cell members and online partisans to attach his sudden prominence to partisan messaging, framing the aviator as an ardent backer of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Upon closer inspection, however, the entire narrative rests upon an Instagram profile whose origins and credibility fall apart under scrutiny.

The actual events took place on September 30, when Captain Machchhar was commanding a scheduled passenger service from Dubai to Tel Aviv. During the flight, his Omani first officer launched a violent knife attack against him directly within the flight deck, an incident widely reported as an attempt to execute a catastrophic, 9/11-style strike against Israel. In the violent struggle that ensued, the passenger jet entered a steep and dangerous descent. Despite sustaining serious injuries, Captain Machchhar managed to unlock the armored cockpit access door, giving passengers and cabin crew the opportunity to rush inside and restrain the assailant. The aircraft subsequently executed an emergency diversion, touching down safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. In the aftermath of the safe landing, both Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued public statements commending Captain Machchhar for his composure and bravery.

Yet, even as Modi and Netanyahu offered official praise for the Indian aviator on the global stage, partisan users on social platforms began circulating digital captures purporting to show that Machchhar holds strong personal political loyalties to Rahul Gandhi.

The central piece of material being distributed is an Instagram handle using the tag @smitmachchhar. The profile displays Machchhar’s personal photo, lists the user as a “Pilot” working for Flydubai, and carries the profile display name “Smit Machchhar”. The circulating grab highlights an interaction where the profile posted the single-word reaction “Respect” beneath an image featuring Rahul Gandhi.

While these images might appear convincing to a casual reader browsing a feed, a deeper examination reveals critical discrepancies that undermine the claim. Chief among them is that nothing in the images demonstrates that the account has any verified connection to the actual Captain Smit Machchhar.

In fact, the platform’s built-in “About this account” transparency tool tells a very different story:

  • The account highlighted in the screenshots was registered only recently, in July 2026.
  • Platform records confirm that the profile has altered its official username nine separate times since its creation.

A public photograph paired with a name string does not establish authentic identity, particularly when an account exhibits a pattern of nine consecutive name changes and carries no verified platform badge linking it directly to Machchhar.

When evaluated objectively, the shared images demonstrate only that a generic profile utilizing Captain Machchhar’s likeness and name wrote the word “Respect” on a political post. They offer no confirmation whatsoever that the Flydubai captain himself authored or endorsed that message.

The push to leverage Machchhar’s public stature appears even more peculiar given that, as of October 1, Rahul Gandhi had not released any public statement recognizing the pilot’s actions. Leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) drew attention to Gandhi’s noticeable absence of comment, even while Congress Party President Mallikarjun Kharge had publicly commended Machchhar’s bravery and extended formal wishes for a full and rapid recovery.

If political supporters genuinely intended to honor Captain Machchhar, the direct path would have been simply acknowledging his decisive conduct and the 174 lives preserved through his resilience. Instead, pushing an unauthenticated, repeatedly renamed social media account reflects an effort to graft partisan interests onto a professional whose life-saving actions had no relation to domestic party politics.
