Andhra Pradesh: Sacred tank of Venugopala Swamy temple in Chittoor used for the conversion of Hindus to Christianity, local church members booked

On Tuesday, 14th November, an incident that challenges the inter-religious fabric of Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, came to light, prompting action from the local authorities. The Andhra Pradesh Police lodged a formal complaint against individuals associated with local churches. Allegedly, these church members utilized the Pushkarini—a sacred water tank of the Venugopala Swamy temple, venerated in Hindu traditions for ritualistic purposes—to perform baptisms on Hindus, ostensibly converting them to Christianity.

This event, reported to have occurred the previous day, on Monday, 13th November, has sparked significant outcry from the Hindu community, which reveres the temple’s sanctity. The Pushkarini, traditionally used for Hindu rituals, has now become a point of contention, as the actions of the church authorities are seen as an infringement on religious boundaries and an assault on the local Hindus' religious rights. The police complaint marks a serious acknowledgment of a potential breach of secular principles and raises concerns over the protection of religious sites.

The event in question, a poignant violation of sacred space, reportedly unfolded in the village of Karvetinagaram within the Chittoor district. Visual evidence of this act, as captured in a video that has since proliferated across the internet, shows individuals congregating around the Skanda Pushkarini, a water tank of the Venugopala Swamy Temple, overseen by the revered Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD).

P. Bhanuprakash Reddy, a spokesperson for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the state level, responded with urgency, recognizing the gravity of the incident. He called for immediate legal recourse against those church members involved. His directive to the local police to identify and take action against those who participated in the conversion activities within the confines of a Hindu temple speaks to the broader issue of religious conversion practices that have long sparked debate and conflict across India.

The call for legislative action against forced religious conversions echoes a strong demand for safeguarding the integrity of Hindu religious practices. This sentiment is captured by the rallying cry for a "Chadar Mukt, Father Mukt Bharat," which seeks to ensure that Hindu practices are conducted without undue influence from other religious ideologies or conversion tactics.

P. Bhanuprakash Reddy's visit to the Venugopala Swamy temple, as reported by Deccan Chronicle, was a deliberate act to address this issue head-on. He urged that pastors who allegedly partook in conversion activities be held accountable under Government Orders 746 and 747—laws enacted to preserve the holiness of places of worship. Reddy's insistence on a detailed security review of all shrines under the jurisdiction of TTD and other Hindu temples is a clear call to action to strengthen measures that ensure the peaceful observance of Hindu customs. This initiative signals a proactive step towards reinforcing civil order and fostering interfaith harmony in a climate where concerns about religious conversions are intensifying.

Bhanuprakash Reddy reports that the BJP has lodged a formal complaint regarding the incident with TTD Executive Officer A.V. Dharma Reddy. The EO has reportedly assured that legal action is forthcoming against those involved in the proselytization attempts within the temple's premises.

Simultaneously, the Karvetinagaram police have initiated legal proceedings, evident in the filing of an FIR (Cr. No: 87/2023) against the implicated church members. This action, prompted by the grievances of the local Hindu community, marks the beginning of a rigorous investigation to unravel the events that transpired at the Devasthanam temple.

The Sangh has highlighted previous instances in various states like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Delhi, and Haryana, where conversion activities have been linked to external funding from places like London. They assert that these conversion efforts are part of a larger strategy, which initially focused on 'love jihad' aimed at Hindu girls, coercing them into conversion and adopting Islam.

Presently, the tactics have allegedly evolved to more overt inducements, including offers of land, money, and marriage, to persuade individuals to convert. Previously confined to remote regions and often associated with Christian missionaries, these activities are now reported closer to the capital, signaling a worrying trend. The Sangh firmly states that conversions should be unequivocally prohibited.

In conclusion, the recurring theme of coercive conversion poses a significant challenge to the fabric of India's pluralistic society. The response from various organizations and law enforcement indicates a collective resolution to address and curb such practices, ensuring that religious freedom is upheld and that conversions, if they occur, are a matter of personal choice and not a result of coercion or inducement. The cases mentioned reflect a broader need for vigilance and adherence to the law, ensuring that every individual's right to religious self-determination is protected.
