Strict Sharia Law enforced by 'Adam Sena' in villages of Ramgarh in Jharkhand, issues rape and murder threats to Muslim girls for violating Sharia, brave Muslim girl files complaint, but the police label it a mere property conflict, leaving the community
In the heart of Jharkhand, a state known for its rich cultural diversity and historical significance, Ramgarh district has recently come under the spotlight for a distressing reason. A group identified as Adam Sena, reportedly formed by Muslim youths, has taken it upon themselves to enforce Sharia law within their local communities. This stringent imposition includes severe restrictions on Muslim girls, notably barring them from any form of interaction with non-Muslim individuals and mandating the wearing of burqas as part of their daily attire.
The situation has taken a darker turn as those who dare to challenge or deviate from these impositions are met with harrowing threats. "Those who dissent face threats of rape, murder, or expulsion from the community by members of Adam Sena." This egregious violation of personal freedoms and safety has sent shockwaves through the community, instilling fear among many.
Despite the gravity of these accusations and the clear threat they pose to individual rights and community harmony, the response from local law enforcement has been surprisingly tepid. Police authorities have seemingly downplayed the severity of these actions, labeling the issue as nothing more than a dispute over land. They assure the public that "a thorough investigation will be done in this case," yet this reassurance does little to address the immediate fear and potential danger facing the community, especially the vulnerable girls directly targeted by these threats.

Attempted Rape, Land Grabbing, and Sharia
Digging deeper into the fabric of this unsettling scenario, the controversy stems from an incident reported at the Rajrappa police station. A distressing complaint was lodged by a young girl, who claims to live under the shadow of death, cast by Salman and Ahmed, the alleged ringleaders of Adam Sena. According to her statement, December 2023 marked a chilling attempt on her dignity when Sabir Ali, a fellow villager, allegedly tried to force himself upon her. She recounts the harrowing experience, stating, "She said that she somehow escaped."
Following the harrowing incident where Sabir Ali allegedly attempted to violate her dignity, the victim's plea for help resulted in an appalling response. Instead of assistance, "Sabir Ali and his family members beat the girl" when she raised her voice, calling for help from her neighbors. This incident wasn't just a moment of terror but a stark illustration of the brutal lengths to which the accused and his associates would go to silence their victims. A formal complaint regarding this beating has been lodged with the police, highlighting the severe and violent tactics employed to intimidate and oppress the girl and her family.
The underlying motive behind these heinous acts, as the victim courageously alleges, is rooted in a sinister desire to displace her family. "The victim alleges that all this is being done so that she and her family leave the village and their land is grabbed." This statement not only sheds light on the immediate threats faced by the girl but also points to a broader, more malicious strategy of coercion and land grabbing by the perpetrators, exploiting fear and violence to force families out of their homes and lands.

Adam Sena Pressuring Victim to Withdraw the Complaint
In a bold move reflecting her refusal to be silenced, the female victim returned to the police station on 17th February 2024, determined to fight for justice. Her visit was to report a chilling development: "Sabir Ali, who had recently been released on bail, along with his accomplices, Salman and Ahmed, were intimidating her to retract her case." This new complaint unveils the continued harassment and intimidation tactics by the alleged offenders, now aiming to quash the legal pursuit against them through coercion.
The victim's account of the confrontation is deeply troubling. "They both told me, ‘We don’t accept administrative action, Sharia law prevails here.’" This statement not only underscores the audacity of Sabir Ali and his associates but also highlights their blatant disregard for the law of the land, choosing instead to impose their own rules, further entrenching the fear and lawlessness they wish to perpetuate. The subsequent actions described by the girl, "These people beat me and the whole family and also threw our belongings out of the house and locked the house," are not just acts of physical violence but also an egregious assault on the dignity and rights of her family, manifesting a clear attempt to forcibly evict them and seize control of their property.
Rape and Death Threats: A Dire Ultimatum
In an escalating crisis that unveils the grim realities faced by a young girl in Ramgarh, Jharkhand, the specter of violence and intimidation looms larger with each passing day. The girl, already ensnared in a web of coercion and fear, has come forward with even more disturbing allegations against individuals associated with Adam Sena, a group imposing its draconian will upon the local community. "The victim girl alleged that some people associated with Adam Sena threatened her and asked her to make a ‘compromise’ in the case." This so-called 'compromise' hints at a sinister attempt to silence her through fear, underscoring the perilous situation she faces for merely seeking justice.
Adding to the gravity of her situation, Ahmed Ansari, purportedly linked to Adam Sena, escalated the intimidation with direct threats. "Ahmed Ansari threatened by abusing on the phone." This personal attack, delivered from the anonymity and safety of a phone call, illustrates the tactics of terror employed to undermine the victim's resolve and force her into submission.
The roots of the conflict trace back to a familial tragedy and the complexities of inheritance. After the passing of their father, the victim and her siblings returned to their ancestral village, only to find themselves entangled in disputes over their rightful land. "However, the disputes related to their ancestral land surfaced at that time." This period of vulnerability was seemingly exploited by those coveting the land, intertwining personal loss with the menace of greed and opportunism.
Amidst this turmoil, Adam Sena's imposition of Sharia law adds another layer of oppression, dictating the victim's attire and interactions. "Now, Adam Sena has enforced Sharia law, instructing her to wear veils and refrain from communicating with individuals from other communities," as per the victim's account. This directive not only infringes on her personal freedoms but also serves as a tool of isolation, further diminishing her agency and support networks in a community now divided by enforced edicts.
In a heart-wrenching declaration of desperation, the victim voices a chilling ultimatum, highlighting the depths of her despair and the perceived lack of recourse. "The victim said in her complaint that her family is being harassed and if the administration does not take action against Adam Sena, she will commit suicide in front of SP’s residence." This statement is not just a cry for help but a sobering reflection of the dire circumstances faced by those caught in the crosshairs of power, tradition, and lawlessness.
Police Say Adam Sena Does Not Exist
In Ramgarh, Jharkhand, a twist emerges in the distressing story involving threats against a young girl. The head of the Rajrappa police station, Navin Prakash Pandey, has clarified the situation to OpIndia. He insists, "This whole dispute is about land. We are investigating the matter." According to him, the conflict wrongly attributed to religious enforcement by 'Adam Sena' is actually a straightforward land dispute.
Pandey further states, "The Adam Army, which is being named, is not active anywhere in this area. Nor has any such complaint been received against it." This statement challenges the existence of Adam Sena and suggests no evidence supports the group's involvement in the alleged threats or Sharia law enforcement.
Highlighting the victim's background, Pandey notes, "The victim’s family earlier lived in Singrauli. After the father’s death, the girl has come to her ancestral village." This provides context to the family's situation and their recent return to the ancestral village, which might have reignited old disputes.
Regarding the legal proceedings, Pandey mentions, "At the same time, two FIRs have been registered so far in the land dispute with her uncle, which is in court." This acknowledges the ongoing legal battle over land, suggesting that the dispute's resolution lies within the judicial system rather than in accusations against a possibly nonexistent group.
This new perspective from the police challenges the initial narrative, focusing the issue on a legal dispute over land rather than religious or gender-based oppression. It highlights the importance of careful investigation and legal process in resolving such conflicts.
