"अब्दुल का भाईचारा": In Kayamkulam, a tragic Bakrid incident saw Shahjahan, 42, fatally stabbing his brother Sadiq, 38, after Sadiq disabled Shahjahan’s motorcycle to stop him from drinking alcohol, despite this, Shahjahan drank and later stabbed Sadiq

In a harrowing incident that has shocked the local community, Shahjahan, a 42-year-old resident of Kayamkulam in Alappuzha, Kerala, fatally stabbed his younger brother, Sadiq, after a heated altercation. The tragedy unfolded when Sadiq confronted his elder brother about his alcohol consumption on the holy day of Bakrid, which fell on June 17, 2024.

The Kerala Police swiftly intervened, apprehending Shahjahan on Wednesday, June 19, as he attempted to flee the scene of the crime. He has been formally charged with the murder of his 38-year-old brother. According to the officers handling the case, Shahjahan’s alcohol addiction has been a long-standing source of tension within the family, frequently leading to disputes and altercations.
Local media reports suggest that Shahjahan would often return home inebriated, sparking confrontations with family members who disapproved of his drinking habits. The situation escalated on Bakrid, a day usually marked by prayer and reflection, when Sadiq explicitly objected to Shahjahan's intention to drink alcohol. This objection, unfortunately, led to a fatal argument that culminated in Sadiq's untimely death.
Sadiq had strong convictions about maintaining the sanctity of Bakrid, an important Islamic holy day, and he took significant measures to prevent his brother from disrupting it with alcohol consumption. In a desperate bid to keep Shahjahan from leaving the house to drink, Sadiq disabled his brother’s motorcycle by cutting its wiring. However, Shahjahan, determined to have his way, managed to leave and consume alcohol regardless.

Later that day, Shahjahan returned home under the influence of alcohol and in a belligerent state. Almost immediately, he began causing disturbances at home, escalating to a full-blown argument with Sadiq. The dispute between the brothers intensified rapidly, reaching a critical point when Shahjahan, in a fit of rage, attacked Sadiq with a knife. The altercation culminated in Shahjahan stabbing Sadiq below the chest, inflicting a severe and ultimately fatal wound. This devastating act of violence has left the family and the local community in profound grief and turmoil.
Sadiq, grievously wounded from the stabbing inflicted by his brother, was urgently rushed to the hospital in hopes of saving his life. Despite the medical team's efforts, the injuries proved too severe, and Sadiq succumbed to them the following morning, leaving behind a family shattered by his loss.
In the aftermath of the stabbing, Shahjahan did not linger at the scene. Overcome by the gravity of his actions, he fled, seeking refuge in a nearby bar. The police, alerted to the incident, launched an immediate search for him. Their efforts were successful, and they apprehended Shahjahan at the bar without further incident. Following his arrest, he was brought before the court, which ordered him to be placed in judicial detention pending trial.
The tragedy unfolded in the home Shahjahan and Sadiq shared with their mother, adding a layer of sorrow for the family already burdened by internal conflicts. It was also reported that Sadiq, though younger and recently separated from his wife, had been trying to hold the family together despite the challenges posed by his brother's addiction and the resulting instability.
