Iran names the son of Mojtaba Khamenei as new Supreme Leader; US President Donald Trump calls the decision ‘unacceptable’ following the strategic strike that ended the previous administration

The political landscape of the Middle East has shifted dramatically following an official announcement from Tehran. Iranian state media has confirmed that Mojtaba Khamenei, the 56-year-old son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been officially selected to take over as the nation’s new Supreme Leader. This significant transition of power was orchestrated by the Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for overseeing the country’s highest leadership roles.

In a formal declaration released on Sunday, March 8th, the governing body stated, “By a decisive vote, the Assembly of Experts appointed Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei as the third Leader of the sacred system of the Islamic Republic of Iran.” This critical decision-making process was carried out by a specialized group of 88 high-ranking clerics, who hold the sole authority to appoint the person who guides the nation’s spiritual and political direction.
The international response to this appointment was immediate and sharp. United States President Donald Trump openly criticized the move, labeling the choice as “unacceptable.” During a conversation with ABC News, the President issued a stern warning regarding the legitimacy of the new leader in the eyes of the West. He stated, “If he doesn’t get approval from us, he’s not going to last long.” This friction comes at a time of extreme tension, as Israel had also previously issued threats to target whoever was named as the next Supreme Leader of Iran before the official announcement was even made.

Mojtaba Khamenei is a figure already well-known to international regulators. In November 2019, the United States Treasury Department placed him under strict sanctions. Despite his new role, Mojtaba has never held a traditionally elected office or a standard government position. Instead, he rose to prominence as an official representative of the Supreme Leader, where he was entrusted with several high-level leadership duties.
According to reports from the Treasury Department, Mojtaba was heavily involved in the country's security apparatus. The department alleged that he worked in close coordination with the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF) and the Basij Resistance Force. These efforts were reportedly aimed at supporting his father’s domestic policies and regional goals. Furthermore, investigations into his personal finances have highlighted significant assets abroad. Reports indicate that he holds properties in Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and the United Kingdom, which include access to luxury real estate in London.

The reasoning behind his selection was hinted at by council member Ayatollah Mohsen Heidari Alekasir shortly before the news broke. He explained that the choice aligned with a specific directive from the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which suggested that the nation's top leader should be a figure who is “hated by the enemy.” Alekasir noted that the assembly had succeeded in this goal, remarking, “Even the Great Satan (US) has mentioned his name.”
Mojtaba’s history is also marked by internal controversy. He faced intense public criticism during the widespread protests in Iran that followed the death of a young woman in custody, who had been detained for allegedly violating strict national dress codes. Politically, he is remembered for his close ties to the rise of hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during the 2005 presidential elections.
President Trump has expressed a desire for a much different outcome in Iran’s leadership. According to a report by Axios, the President suggested he wanted a direct hand in the selection process to ensure regional stability. He was quoted as saying, “They are wasting their time. Khamenei’s son is a lightweight. I have to be involved in the appointment, like with Delcy (Rodriguez) in Venezuela.” The President cautioned that if the new leader continues the hardline policies of his father, it could lead to further military conflict with the United States. He emphasized that his preference would be for a leader capable of bringing “harmony and peace” back to the Iranian people.
This change in leadership follows the chaotic events of February 28th, when Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was eliminated in a joint US-Israel strike. That event significantly escalated the ongoing conflict within the Middle East, leading directly to the current political crossroads.
