In the quiet village of Ramgarh Sardaran, Ludhiana, a family is grappling with a devastating loss. This heartbreaking news came on Friday, casting a shadow of grief over his family and the entire nation.

Ajay Singh, a braveheart who had always harbored dreams of serving his country, had joined the Indian Army to fulfill this lifelong aspiration. His family, deeply rooted in a humble background, relied on him as their beacon of hope. His father, Charanjit Singh Kala, earns his livelihood as a daily wage laborer, while his mother, Laxmi alias Manjit Kaur, works as a domestic help. The family, comprising Ajay's parents and his six sisters, resides in a modest one-room house in the village, part of the Payal division in Ludhiana district. They have faced life's challenges without the support of owning agricultural land, a common means of sustenance in rural India.
Ajay's upbringing in this tight-knit family in Ramgarh Sardaran, a part of Ludhiana’s Khanna, was filled with love but marred by financial hardships. Despite these challenges, Ajay emerged as a pillar of strength and support for his family. His father, Charanjit Singh, recalls how Ajay was recruited into the Indian Army as an "Agniveer" in 2022, a proud moment that brought a ray of hope to their lives.
One of Ajay’s sisters shared her thoughts, saying, “My brother wanted to join the force and serve the nation. He was a pillar of support for us.” This sentiment resonates deeply, painting a picture of a young man whose aspirations were not just for himself but for the well-being and pride of his entire family.

In a poignant recollection of their final conversation, the family of Agniveer Ajay Singh reflects on the last moments they shared with him. The news of his tragic demise in a landmine blast in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district has left them in a state of profound grief.
On Wednesday evening, just a day before the dreadful news reached them, Ajay had made a routine phone call to his family. “We spoke over the phone on Wednesday evening. He asked me about my welfare. He also spoke with his mother,” his father Charanjit Singh Kala recalled, his voice heavy with sorrow. These last exchanges, seemingly mundane at the moment, have now become cherished memories for a family grappling with an irreversible loss.
Ajay’s mother, overcome with grief, remembers the simplicity and care in her son's words during their final conversation. “Talking to me over the phone, he asked whether I had had my dinner,” she said, tears welling up in her eyes. These words, reflecting a son's concern for his mother, gain a heartrending significance in the wake of his passing.
Ajay's journey to becoming an Agniveer in the Indian Army in 2022 was driven by his personal ambition and the economic constraints of his family. Despite their financial struggles, Ajay's determination to serve the nation remained unwavering. His father, Charanjit Singh Kala, 58, devastated by the news of his son's death, expressed his deep emotions to The Indian Express. He emphasized that Ajay's sacrifice deserves equal respect and dignity as is given to other deceased soldiers who die for the country. “Ohnu vi shaheed da darja milna chahida hai (He also deserves the status of a martyr). We are proud of his sacrifice for the country but his death deserves equal respect and dignity as it is given to other soldiers who are not Agniveers.”
In the humble household of Charanjit Singh Kala in Ramgarh Sardaran village, the story of their son, Agniveer Ajay Singh, is one of dreams intertwined with hardship. Despite Ajay's enlistment in the Army, the family's financial struggles continued unabated, a reality that Charanjit Singh Kala, Ajay's father, shares with a heavy heart.
“I worked as a labourer for my entire life. After I started keeping unwell, Ajay’s mother started working in others’ homes to cook and clean so that we could have two meals a day,” said Charanjit Singh Kala.
Ajay's decision to join the Army was fueled not only by his personal aspirations but also by his family's dire financial situation. Charanjit Singh Kala acknowledges that they were aware of the potential limitations in terms of benefits for Agniveers compared to other soldiers. Yet, Ajay was determined to improve his family's circumstances and thus chose to walk this path.
His father reminisced, “We had taken some loan for the marriage of our four daughters. After clearing class-12 from a local government school, Ajay had also worked as a construction laborer for sometime but as soon as the Agniveer vacancies opened, he immediately applied for it. He said it was his dream to experience life as a soldier even if for four years.” This narrative underscores Ajay's commitment to his dream and his sense of responsibility towards his family. Even as he pursued his passion for the military, his actions were always anchored in the wellbeing of his loved ones.
Ajay's dream of experiencing life as an Armyman, despite the challenges and uncertainti
es that lay ahead, was a beacon of hope for him and his family. The last conversation they had with him was on a Thursday, filled with optimism and plans for his return home on leave in February.
In the wake of the tragic loss of Agniveer Ajay Singh, his family, represented by his paternal uncle Balwinder Singh, has voiced a heartfelt plea for support and recognition from the government. The loss of Ajay, who served his country with dedication, has left his family not only in mourning but also in a precarious financial situation.
Balwinder Singh's statement paints a stark picture of the family's struggles: “This family’s financial condition is so bad that it is even difficult to explain in words. Their only hope was their son who is gone too. We hope that the Punjab government will give them their due Rs 1 crore compensation as per their policy and Centre too would reconsider their decision and give due benefits to families of deceased Agniveers. They have lost their everything.” His words underscore the harsh reality faced by the family, who had pinned their hopes and future on Ajay, their son and brother.
The family's situation is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those in the armed forces and the profound impact their loss has on loved ones. While acknowledging the inherent risks of military service, the family's call for support is a testament to their need for recognition and assistance in their time of grief.
Responding to the tragedy, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed his condolences: “Agniveer Ajay Singh, who hailed from village Ramgarh Sardaran near Khanna (Ludhiana), attained martyrdom in a landmine blast.”

Chief Minister Mann further emphasized Ajay’s bravery, stating, “The brave jawan laid down his life while performing his duty valiantly,” and reassured that the Punjab government is with his family at this tragic hour.
In response to the tragic loss of Agniveer Ajay Singh, there has been a commitment from the state government to extend monetary assistance to his bereaved family. This gesture of support is a crucial step in acknowledging the sacrifice made by Ajay and the profound impact of his loss on his family.
The government's assurance of financial aid aligns with the state's policy of providing support to families who have lost their loved ones in service to the nation. This policy is not just a form of assistance but a recognition of the ultimate sacrifice made by soldiers like Ajay. It's a reminder to the family that their son's bravery and dedication to the country have not gone unnoticed and that the nation stands with them in their time of grief.
The circumstances of Ajay's death highlight the perilous nature of military service, especially in conflict zones. Ajay was killed in a landmine blast while patrolling the forward area in the Nowshera sector, near the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district. This incident, which also resulted in injuries to two other security personnel, underscores the constant risks faced by soldiers deployed in such sensitive regions.
Ajay's death, while performing his duty in one of the most challenging environments, is a stark reminder of the dangers our soldiers face every day to ensure the nation's security. It brings to light the harsh realities of military life, where soldiers are often exposed to life-threatening situations as part of their service.
