In a fierce 2-day hunt through Jammu & Kashmir's Lidwas forest, Indian forces gunned down Pahalgam attack mastermind Hashim Musa and 2 LeT-Jaish terrorists, using drone intel, local nomad tips, and elite units under Operation Mahadev to avenge 26 lives

In a major breakthrough in counter-terror efforts, the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and CRPF launched a joint offensive named Operation Mahadev and successfully eliminated three terrorists, including the key architect of the deadly Pahalgam attack. The operation was spearheaded by the Chinar Corps in the forested region of Lidwas in Jammu and Kashmir, acting on critical intelligence.

Among those gunned down was Hashim Musa, a top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander and the main conspirator and executor of the Pahalgam attack, sources confirmed to India Today. The operation reached its climax at 12:37 PM, when the Chinar Corps confirmed that contact had been established with terrorists in the General Area Lidwas. Just under an hour later, drone surveillance revealed three dead bodies, officially validating that the trio had been neutralised.
This wasn’t a spontaneous strike. The anti-terror operation had been meticulously developing for two days after security forces intercepted suspicious communications deep within the Dachigam forests. Adding to the breakthrough, local nomads shared valuable inputs, helping security teams narrow down the search perimeter and close in on their targets.
The intelligence trail pointed directly to terrorists affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba, the same organisation that claimed responsibility for the blood-soaked Pahalgam attack, intensifying the urgency of the mission.

How the Army Cornered the Terrorists
The hunt began with the detection of a suspicious communication transmission from the Dachigam region, believed to be linked to the Pahalgam attackers. Acting on this lead, the Indian Army rapidly mobilised multiple search and domination teams, deploying them over the region during the past two days.
Then, at around 11:30 AM, a breakthrough came. A joint assault unit comprising 24 Rashtriya Rifles and 4 PARA successfully located a group of three terrorists. The soldiers used tactical surprise and superior manoeuvring to swiftly neutralise the threat before it could escalate.
Sources later disclosed that these militants were part of a combined Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed module that had been under active surveillance for the past 14 days. Intelligence estimates suggest that this module comprised between 5 to 7 individuals.
On the morning of the encounter, a splinter unit of three terrorists was tracked to a concealed trench hideout under a tree, heavily camouflaged by forest vegetation. This covert base had served as a temporary shelter for the killers until the Army’s precision strike ended their mission.
Possible Link to the Pahalgam Massacre
According to a high-level source speaking to India Today, “There is a high probability that the militants killed in this encounter may have been involved in the brutal Pahalgam terror attack that took place on April 22, 2025, in the Baisaran Valley area of Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 innocent civilians.”
While the search continues for other members of the terror module, authorities are working to formally identify the neutralised men. Only after this process can investigators confirm or dismiss their involvement in the Pahalgam bloodbath.
The operation was jointly executed by the Indian Army, J&K Police, and CRPF, and efforts are ongoing to confirm whether the eliminated trio were among the actual shooters behind the massacre.
The Pahalgam attack shocked the entire country. In a horrifying act of extremist violence, 26 tourists were mercilessly killed in front of their loved ones, while women and children begged in vain for mercy. The images and videos from that day continue to haunt the national conscience.
In retaliation, India responded forcefully with Operation Sindoor, targeting nine terrorist training camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and across the border in Pakistan, reportedly killing over 100 terrorists. While that operation served as a strategic blow to terror infrastructure, the hunt for those directly responsible for the Pahalgam massacre remained active.
Now, Operation Mahadev continues, with Chinar Corps confirming that three terrorists were neutralised. The mission marks a significant milestone, but the pursuit of complete justice for the Pahalgam victims is still ongoing.
