Uttarakhand Minister Questions Daler Mehndi’s Conduct, Discloses ₹35 Lakh Performance Fee

Punjabi pop icon Daler Mehndi has found himself at the center of an intense public controversy following a confrontation during the cultural evening of the historic Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair in New Tehri, Uttarakhand. The incident occurred on the night of October 18, during a major cultural celebration held in honor of Maa Durga as part of the auspicious Navratri festivities.

Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister and local MLA Subodh Uniyal walked directly onto the stage, interrupted Mehndi’s performance in front of the gathered audience, and objected to his demeanor and delivery. Uniyal later confirmed that the state had offered the veteran artist ₹35 lakh to appear at the government-backed cultural gathering.

Explaining his decision to halt the show, Uniyal stated to ANI: "He is a big artist. If a big artist doesn't do justice to their art...He seemed disoriented on stage and didn't seem to be able to even keep standing. Besides this, he was only lip-syncing to his songs. I told him that he is a big artist and he should do justice to his art; he had been offered ₹35 lakh to come and perform, but he was not even singing. So, I expressed my resentment."

Confrontation on the Sacred Stage

Eyewitness accounts and video documentation captured the moment the minister approached the singer mid-show. Uniyal alleged that Mehndi was under the influence of alcohol and struggling to perform, though these accusations of intoxication have not been independently confirmed.

During the exchange, the minister openly questioned the artist's capacity to continue, asking: "You cannot even speak, so how are you going to sing?" In Hindi, he was heard demanding: "Bol toh jaa nahi raha, gaana kya gaoge? (You can't even speak properly, so how will you sing?”

According to reports by the Press Trust of India (PTI), Uniyal emphasized to the performer that the public had assembled specifically to hear him perform live and had reasonable expectations regarding professional standards. Pointing to the religious sanctity of the Navratri festival, the cabinet minister stressed that basic decorum had to be preserved: "There is a Durga Mata programme for Navratri, and you are singing at the event after drinking alcohol, which is not appropriate."

Addressing Mehndi directly, Uniyal reprimanded him for what he characterized as a breach of trust: "Itna paisa deke aapko humne bulaya hai. Iss liye bulaya taaki humare logon ko entertain ho. Aap bewakoof bana rahe hai humein. Galat baat hai. You are a big name. Aapko iss liye bulaya gaya tha kyunki aap bada naam hai, (We called you so that our people could be entertained. You are making a fool of us. You have a big name that is why we called you)." He continued: "We called you so that our people could be entertained. You are making a fool of us. This is wrong. It's wrong. You have a big name; we should respect that. You were called because you have a big name."

Faced with the public reprimand, Daler Mehndi attempted to defuse the situation, telling the minister: "Sir, I request you with folded hands...please leave the stage."

Footage of the exchange rapidly circulated across social media platforms, sparking conflicting public reactions. One user observed: "IDK, but Daler Mehndi is looking so much out of touch with reality. No host will ever want to disrespect an invitee like that. I think I am feeling sorry for Daler M. That is poor Mr Daler; your energy is what not showing up there!" Another commenter sided with the minister: "Galat baat hai, sharab pee ke he's disrespecting the stage. Sharam aani chahiye. I'm a punjabi myself, Subodh ji is correct." A third viewer remarked: "Daler paaji is a fantastic singer but he’s clearly intoxicated and slurring words here. BJP and other such party people need to stop entertaining such characters nationwide especially for “religious” programs."

Daler Mehndi remains one of India's foundational pop figures, credited with bringing bhangra and Indian pop into mainstream culture during the 1990s through anthems like "Bolo Ta Ra Ra" (or "Bolo Tara Rara"), "Tunak Tunak Tun", "Dardi Rab Rab", and "Ho Jayegi Balle Balle". His voice has also powered major Bollywood soundtracks, including "Na Na Na Re" from Mrityudata, the title track of Rang De Basanti, its anthem "Paathshaala", and "Kudiyan Sheher Diyan".

Mika Singh Pledges Career in Defense of His Brother

A day after the public confrontation, Daler Mehndi's younger brother, playback star Mika Singh, mounted a fierce defense on social media, forcefully denying that Mehndi consumes alcohol.

In a video statement shared on his Instagram feed, Mika offered an absolute guarantee: "If you ever see Daler Mehndi drinking alcohol, I'll quit singing."

Mika challenged the viral reporting, stating: "I saw the news. You people have spread this 'Daler Mehndi was drunk while singing, he is unable to sing' First of all, I would like to ask you all- he has been a superstar for the last 30 years. Have you ever seen a glass of alcohol in his hand, or seen alcohol flowing freely at his birthday parties?"

He continued, pointing out the realities of working artists: "No, you have not. Jab aapne dekha hi nahi, toh aapne kaise keh diya unse khada nahi hua jaa raha. Hum artists kayin baar kisi ke kehne par haan kar dete hain 'yes we will do the show' Even if we have 104 degree fever, it doesn't matter. If I am sick, and I have a show day after tomorrow, and I have already committed, then even if the budget is big or small, I will do it. Inhone (Daler) bhi aisa hi kiya hoga." (No, you haven't. If you haven't seen it yourself, how can you say that he was unable to stand? As artists, we often agree to perform at someone's request and say, 'Yes, we will do the show.' Even if we have a fever of 104 degrees, it doesn't matter. If I am unwell and have a show the day after tomorrow, but have already committed to it, I will honour that commitment regardless of whether the budget is big or small. He (Daler Mehndi) must have done the same.")

In his accompanying caption, Mika wrote: "Happy Dussehra, everyone! A special request to our media friends: Please verify the facts before publishing any news! If someone makes allegations without proof, please don't believe them blindly or spread the news without checking the truth. The way Daler Mehndi was treated on stage was disappointing. A respected minister came on stage and made allegations about him drinking alcohol. But before publishing such claims, shouldn't we verify the facts and give the artist a chance to present his side?."

Mika also questioned why Indian performers face different standards than western acts, while pointing to his brother's ongoing health struggles and recent serious medical procedures: "Would anyone dare to behave like that with an international band like Coldplay? I know my brother Daler Mehndi, and he does not drink alcohol. He has been unwell for the past two years and is still recovering, yet he continues to perform with his band. These days, many performers use backing tracks, but nobody questions them in the same way."

Concluding his appeal, Mika urged responsible journalism: "Daler Mehndi is one of India's biggest superstars, and perhaps that is why he becomes an easy target. I request our media friends to be responsible and fair. A headline can damage someone's reputation, so please check the facts before publishing anything. Respect our artists. Verify before you report. Stand by the truth."

Music Fraternity Rallies: Palash Sen Urges Empathy Over Ridicule

Following Mika Singh’s defense, Euphoria frontman Dr. Palash Sen voiced his support for Mehndi, urging listeners to recognize the human cost of online pile-ons.

Posting a note on Instagram, Sen acknowledged the pain caused by the backlash: “Seeing the continuous trolling and negativity directed toward you hurts, but it also reminds me of how easy it is for people behind screens to forget the human being behind the icon. They see memes and headlines… I see a man who has given his entire life, sweat, and soul to spreading happiness, uplifting culture, and serving through his art and philanthropy.”

Sen noted that performance dips often stem from physical limitations rather than misconduct: “Everyone has a bad day or ill health. Even legends can fall ill, but can’t disappoint their fans by not showing up. You showed up and tried to do your best.”

Insisting that an evening's controversy could not diminish Mehndi's broader legacy, Sen added: “People may mock, criticize, or judge, but no amount of noise can erase your legacy, your kindness, or the unshakeable dignity with which you carry yourself.”

Appealing for compassion, the singer-physician wrote: “To everyone quick to judge or laugh—behind every famous face is a real person. A fallible, vulnerable human. Please look at him with love and respect always. He is a gem of our country.”

Signing off, Sen wrote: “My dear Veer, stay strong. Circumstances are temporary, but love, respect, and your legacy are forever. I stand by you & love you today, tomorrow, and always.” He captioned the post: “Sabse Diler, Mera Bhai Daler. It’s easy to mock, but very tough to be compassionate, empathetic and Sensitive..”

Daler Mehndi responded directly in the comments, expressing gratitude for the public support: “Thank You so much for the support🙏🏻 Rab Rakha Shukar🙏🏻.”
