The serene hills and valleys of Himachal Pradesh have lately been witnessing nature's wrath. In an alarming revelation, official data suggests that the state has faced one of its most catastrophic monsoon seasons ever, with a significant human and economic toll.

Himachal Pradesh, often referred to as the "Land of Gods," has been plunged into a state of shock and sorrow. Since the onset of the monsoon season on June 24, the state has experienced unprecedented devastation. According to local authorities, the incessant rains have claimed as many as 257 lives due to a myriad of tragic reasons. Breaking this down, landslides and flash floods, common yet deadly consequences of relentless rainfall, are responsible for the demise of 66 individuals. On the other hand, 191 lives were snuffed out due to unfortunate road mishaps and other related incidents. The officials further shed light on the distressing fact that 32 persons remain unaccounted for, while nearly 290 have sustained injuries amidst the chaos.

But the rain's onslaught didn't just claim lives. The very infrastructure that supported the local populace has also faced nature's fury. A staggering 1,376 homes have been wholly decimated, leaving families homeless and distraught. In addition to this, another 7,935 dwellings have endured partial damage, jeopardizing the safety of their occupants. Local businesses, the lifeline of many communities, haven't been spared either. Approximately 270 shops have been left in ruins, and an astounding 2,727 cow sheds, vital for the region's agrarian society, have been ravaged.

Records indicate that the state has suffered from 90 debilitating landslides and 55 flash flood events. This has resulted in the closure of a shocking 450 roads, which includes two crucial National Highways, isolating communities and hampering rescue efforts. The basic amenities that we often take for granted – electricity and water – are currently a luxury for many in the state. As many as 1,814 electrical supply schemes have been interrupted, and 59 water supply frameworks are still in disarray.

In a move that underscores the severity of the situation, the Himachal Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, decreed the closure of all educational institutions on August 14, prioritizing the safety of young minds. Following the CM's directive, the state's Education Secretary swiftly issued a mandate to ensure the closure of all educational establishments, both government and private. To further emphasize the gravity of the circumstances, the Department of Education took the step of postponing all scheduled examinations for Post Graduate courses, including B.Ed tests, slated for August 14.

Chief Minister Sukhu, demonstrating proactive governance, sought detailed feedback from District Collectors regarding the scale of devastation in their respective districts. He was briefed about the numerous road closures and the extensive damage incurred due to landslides and housing destruction. Staying hands-on, he instructed top officials like the Chief Secretary and Home Secretary, along with all District Collectors, to remain vigilant. Stressing the importance of restoring normalcy, he emphasized that the administrative apparatus must work tirelessly to ensure the seamless restoration of road, electricity, and water services.

Alarming weather conditions prompt University exam cancellations and residential evacuations

The Himachal Pradesh University, in light of the continuous rains and unpredictable weather conditions, has taken the decisive step to cancel all ongoing examinations for its Post Graduate courses, including B.Ed, scheduled for August 14. The decision relayed through a university notification, stresses the importance of prioritizing the safety of its students and faculty over academic obligations.

But the challenges don't end there. Shimla, the picturesque capital of Himachal Pradesh, famous for its colonial architecture and captivating hill views, is now in turmoil due to the effects of the heavy downpours. Landslides, triggered by continuous rains, have wreaked havoc across the city, posing a dire threat to several houses. Acting swiftly on this, the Shimla Municipal Corporation sent out notices for evacuation in areas affected by a significant landslide in the Himland region. This measure became vital as several homes were immediately threatened by the shifting terrain.

Mahboob Sheiq, the Architect Planner of Shimla Municipal Corporation, provided insight into the urgency of the evacuation. He emphasized the fragility of the area due to the landslides and the unsafe conditions they present. After issuing advisories to the affected residents, all seven of them have promptly vacated their homes. Their return now hinges on a thorough safety evaluation.

Local residents are grappling with a palpable sense of dread and uncertainty. The looming threat of more rain, as forecasted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), adds to their worries. Expressing his concern, KC Katoch, a resident, narrated the harrowing experience of witnessing landslides caused by structural water discharge issues and the subsequent evacuation. In a silver lining amidst the ongoing adversity, the district authorities of Solan reported the reopening of several roads previously rendered impassable due to landslides and rain-related incidents. Vital arteries like the National Highway-05, National Highway-205, and roads in proximity to National Highway-907A are gradually seeing restoration. In particular, on NH-05, around 11 roadways have been reclaimed from the landslides, although some continue to operate under limited capacity.

However, as the state grapples with the immediate aftermath of the monsoon tragedies, the IMD’s forecast adds to the prevailing anxiety.

The weather bureau predicts that Himachal Pradesh is set to witness a continued spell of moderate to heavy rainfall. Districts such as Chamba, Kangra, Hamirpur, Mandi, Bilaspur, Solan, Shimla, Kullu, and Sirmaur are on high alert for extremely heavy downpours. Watershed regions, like Beas, Ranjit Sagar, and the Pong dam area, also brace for extreme rain. The Sutlej catchment area hasn't been spared either, with forecasts predicting very heavy rainfall.
