RG Kar Rape and Murder Case: Glass Shards in Eyes, Head Slammed Against Wall, Neck Broken, Autopsy Reveals Horrific Details of Assault

The tragic death of a 32-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has sent shockwaves through the community, revealing a horrifying narrative of brutal torture leading up to her death. The postmortem report, spanning four pages, disclosed that she was not only raped but also subjected to extreme physical torture before being suffocated to death. The report chillingly described that she had been strangled, and the assault involved “perverted sexuality” and “genital torture,” causing severe injuries to her private parts.

Further examination showed that her thyroid cartilage was shattered, a clear indication of the brutality she endured. According to sources, the crime took place on 9th August, most likely between 3 and 5 am. Her body bore multiple injuries, with her lips, fingers, left leg, and abdomen showing signs of the violent attack.

Sources revealed that the victim's head was violently slammed against either a wall or the floor, causing significant trauma. In a bid to silence her, the assailant pressed her mouth and nose shut, preventing any cries for help. The report also detailed how she fought desperately for her life, as the accused reportedly beat her while she tried to resist the assault. Despite her efforts, he overpowered, raped, and ultimately killed her. The autopsy provided further grim details, showing cuts on her hands and face, evidence of her struggle. Additionally, shards of glass from her broken spectacles lodged into her eyes following a severe blow, further ruling out any possibility of suicide. The initial postmortem report confirmed that the trainee doctor had been sexually assaulted before being murdered.

The accused, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was reportedly intoxicated at the time of the attack. The evidence suggests that the victim made a valiant attempt to defend herself, as his fingernails left scratch marks on her face, indicating a fierce struggle. His hands and face also bore cut marks, showing that she fought back in an attempt to save herself. The report noted pressure marks on her face, a result of the perpetrator covering her mouth while he brutally slammed her head against the wall.

In the words of the report, “The mouth and throat were constantly pressed to prevent screaming. The throat was strangled to suffocate. The thyroid cartilage broke due to this strangulation.” The report also emphasized, “Homicidal injuries are antemortem in nature with an indication of sexual penetration,” confirming that the doctor sustained these injuries while she was still alive, with clear evidence pointing to sexual assault.

The postmortem report of the trainee doctor raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital uncovered further distressing details. The woman was found bleeding from her mouth, eyes, and private areas, as noted in the report. The night of the incident, she had dinner with four of her coworkers at 2:30 am, following their collective watch of Neeraj Chopra’s javelin throw during the Paris Olympics. Afterward, she decided to relax in the seminar hall. Police records show that four of the seven junior doctors, whose statements have been taken, shared this meal with her. Additionally, the Assistant Superintendent, who first informed the family of the incident, along with the chief of the Chest Department, has been summoned by the authorities for questioning.

Earlier that evening, at 11 pm, the doctor had informed her mother that she had placed an online order for food. After dinner, she headed to the lecture hall, where she lay down to rest on a blue carpet, covered by a red blanket. It was during this time, while she was asleep, that she was viciously attacked. Sanjay Roy, who had access to all departments due to his role at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital police outpost, exploited this access to commit the crime. Though he was not officially affiliated with the institution, his presence there was not uncommon. CCTV footage captured him entering the premises where the doctor was later found dead, leading to his arrest on 10th August. After committing the heinous act, Roy returned home, slept in late, and attempted to cover his tracks by cleaning the clothes he wore during the crime. However, during a police search, his bloodstained shoes were recovered, further incriminating him.

The postmortem findings were clear: the trainee doctor had been throttled to death, with her thyroid cartilage broken due to strangulation. A severe wound was also found in her private parts, as detailed in the four-page report. Sources indicated that the rape and murder likely occurred between 3 am and 5 am on 9th August.

Trigger Warning: Disturbing Details Below

The postmortem report on the horrific death of the trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital revealed further disturbing details. Injuries were found on her belly, lips, fingers, and left leg, painting a grim picture of the brutality she endured. Sources indicated that the victim's nose and mouth were forcibly clamped, and her head was pushed against a wall to prevent her from screaming.

The report noted that the scratch marks on the woman’s face were likely caused by the accused’s fingernails, suggesting that the victim desperately tried to fight back against her attacker. “The mouth and throat were constantly pressed to prevent screaming. The throat was strangled to suffocate. The thyroid cartilage broke due to strangling,” the postmortem report confirmed.

In addition to the physical injuries, the report also mentioned that the woman was bleeding from both eyes, her mouth, and private parts. The wounds in her private parts were described as being caused by “perverted sexuality” and “genital torture.” However, the cause of the eye injuries has not yet been determined.

The body of the post-graduate trainee was tragically found in the hospital’s seminar room on Friday morning. Following the discovery, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested in connection with the case. Roy, who was stationed at the police outpost at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, had access to all departments within the hospital. His arrest on Saturday came after CCTV footage captured him entering the building where the doctor was later found murdered.

This brutal murder has ignited widespread outrage, with doctors and nurses leading protests in Kolkata and other parts of India. In the wake of the incident, Sandip Ghosh, the principal of RG Kar Medical College, resigned from his post, further highlighting the gravity of the situation.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee issued a stern warning to the Kolkata police, stating that the investigation would be transferred to the CBI if the police are unable to crack the case by Sunday.

Top Points on Kolkata Rape-and-Murder Case:

  1. After severely injuring and sexually assaulting the doctor, the accused, Sanjoy Roy, killed her by throttling and smothering her. The investigation indicated that the murder took place between 3 am and 5 am on Friday.

  2. Sanjoy Roy was allegedly addicted to pornography, with his mobile phone containing several such contents, according to police reports.

  3. The 33-year-old accused, who joined the Kolkata Police as a civic volunteer in 2019, was reportedly married at least four times and was known as a “womaniser,” the police stated.

  4. “The pornography content in his mobile phone was quite disturbing and violent. We wonder about the state of his mind as watching such things is quite unnatural,” PTI quoted a police officer as saying.

  5. The investigation further revealed that Sanjoy Roy had a history of physically abusing his wives, adding another layer of concern to his behavior.

  6. Neighbors of Sanjoy Roy provided more insight into his personal life, mentioning that his first wife was from Behala, while the second was from Park Circus. “He got married for the third time to a girl from Barrackpore. But that also did not last long. Then he married a girl from the city's Alipore area,” a neighbor said.

  7. Sanjoy Roy, who is also a trained boxer, had reportedly gotten close to a few senior police officers over the years, leading to his transfer to the Kolkata Police Welfare Board. It was during this time that he was posted to the police outpost at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the tragic incident occurred.

  8. Despite the mounting evidence against him, Sanjoy Roy's mother, Malati Roy, dismissed the allegations, claiming that her son was “innocent.”

  9. Meanwhile, junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital expressed their frustration, questioning why West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee set a seven-day deadline to solve the rape and murder of the postgraduate trainee. They asserted that they would continue their strike until their demands are met. Earlier on Monday, Mamata Banerjee had stated that her government would transfer the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if the police failed to resolve it by Sunday.

  10. Resident doctors at government hospitals across the country joined the protests on Monday, with those in West Bengal and Delhi going on an indefinite strike. This strike affected OPD services and non-emergency surgeries. In Kolkata, junior doctors, who had been attending only to emergency duties for the past three days, halted even those services as of Monday morning. This move followed a call from the Federation of Resident Doctors' Association (FORDA), which declared that “the strike won't stop unless justice is served and our demands are met.”

Kolkata Rape-Murder: 'Womaniser' Accused Married 4 Times, Watched 'Disturbing, Violent' Porn

The Kolkata police on Monday claimed that the man arrested for raping and murdering a doctor in a government hospital was addicted to watching porn, with several such clips found on his mobile phone.

The accused, Sanjoy Roy, was noted for his disturbing behavior, particularly his preference for watching “disturbing and violent” porn, which a police officer described as “unnatural.”

Sanjoy Roy, 33, who joined the police as a civic volunteer in 2019, had been married four times and was identified as a “womaniser,” according to the officer who spoke to PTI. “The pornography content in his mobile phone was quite disturbing and violent. We wonder about the state of his mind as watching such things is quite unnatural,” the officer added.

Sanjoy Roy Had a History of Abuse

Further investigation revealed that Sanjoy Roy had a history of physically abusing his wives. His neighbors provided more details about his personal life, stating that his first wife was from Behala, while the second wife was from Park Circus.

“He got married for the third time to a girl from Barrackpore. But that also did not last long. Then he married a girl from the city's Alipore area,” a neighbor explained. The police officer also mentioned that neighbors often complained about the sounds of fights coming from Roy’s house. “His fourth wife, who was working at a petrol pump in Alipore, had also lodged a complaint of domestic violence, which went on till legal separation was granted,” the officer added.

Accused's Mother Says Son Innocent

Sanjoy Roy, a trained boxer, was posted to the police outpost at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the tragic incident occurred. Despite the mounting evidence against him, his mother, Malati Roy, maintained her son's innocence, stating that he was being framed.

"I do not know anything, but my son is innocent. I think he has been framed," she said. She also mentioned that Sanjoy had studied at a school in Bhabanipur and was a part of the National Cadet Corps (NCC).

The police, however, have a different stance. They have booked Roy under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the BNS, with significant evidence pointing to his involvement. "There is ample evidence that the accused was throwing his weight around because of his proximity with senior police officers. This aspect is also under investigation," the officer stated.

After committing the crime, Roy reportedly returned to his barracks and slept for several hours before washing his clothes in an attempt to eliminate evidence. Despite this, the police found blood spots on his shoes. He was ultimately arrested after the police discovered his Bluetooth headset at the crime scene.

The doctor, a post-graduate trainee, was found murdered inside the seminar hall of the hospital. She had been on night duty and had gone to the hall to rest. The autopsy confirmed the horrifying details: she had been raped, with blood found oozing from her private parts, mouth, and eyes. Her neck was also found to be broken.
