Popular Kolkata YouTuber Shamik Adhikary jailed for rape after exposing state politics, sparking fury as BJP claims TMC framed him for exercising his democratic rights just before the election

In a developing story that has merged criminal allegations with high-stakes political drama, the Kolkata Police have arrested Shamik Adhikary, a prominent 25-year-old social media influencer known to his legion of fans as “Nonsane.”

The arrest, which took place in the Dum Dum area of Kolkata on the evening of Thursday, February 5th, has triggered a firestorm of debate across the state. While the police have charged Adhikary with serious sexual offenses, the timing of the arrest—coming shortly after he posted a viral video critical of the state government—has led to widespread speculation about potential political motivations.
Adhikary’s legal troubles began when he was initially booked on charges related to wrongful confinement, physical assault, and outraging the modesty of a woman. However, the severity of the case escalated quickly. Following a detailed statement provided by the 22-year-old complainant, the police have now framed him under the much graver charge of rape.
The accused was presented before the court on Friday, February 6th. After reviewing the initial details, the court remanded him to police custody until February 16th to facilitate further interrogation. According to official police reports submitted to the court, the allegations stem from an incident occurring earlier this month. The complainant has stated that Adhikary forcibly confined her at his residence in Behala, Kolkata. This alleged confinement reportedly lasted from approximately 9:30 pm on February 2nd until 5 pm the following day.
The details provided by the victim paint a harrowing picture of those hours. She has alleged that during her confinement, she was subjected to brutal physical assault, including beatings and threats. Furthermore, she stated that Adhikary touched her inappropriately and pulled at her clothing before eventually subjecting her to penetratory sexual assault.
To substantiate the charges, the police informed the court that a medico-legal examination of the victim was carried out at M.R. Bangur Hospital. A female police officer was present to formally record her statement, which led to the inclusion of the specific section of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita concerning rape in the First Information Report (FIR). Prosecutors highlighted that injury marks were discovered on the victim’s body, corroborating her account of physical struggle. They also noted that the victim was visibly traumatised, which explains why there was a brief delay in her filing the formal police report.
Adding to the gravity of the accusations, investigators told the court that Adhikary allegedly resorted to blackmail, threatening the woman by sending her compromising photographs of herself. To counter any claims of an alibi, police investigators presented technical evidence, stating that mobile tower location data successfully placed both the complainant and the accused at the crime scene during the hours mentioned in the complaint.
In his defence, Adhikary’s legal team argued that the narrative is not as it seems. They contended that the two individuals are old friends with a long history of knowing one another. The defence claimed that while there may have been a misunderstanding on the night in question, absolutely no force was used. They further questioned the necessity of continued police custody, arguing that there was nothing substantial left for the agency to investigate.

The Content That Ignited a Political Storm
To understand why this arrest has become a state-wide talking point, one must look at Shamik Adhikary’s digital footprint. He is not merely a casual user of social media; he is a significant influencer with a combined audience of over 800,000 people—boasting around 420,000 followers on Instagram and over 400,000 on Facebook. However, it was a specific piece of content posted on January 21st that catapulted him from online entertainer to a figure of political controversy.
Posted on his Instagram account ‘@yournonsane’, the reel went live just two months prior to the highly anticipated West Bengal elections. The video was an instant viral sensation, accumulating over 3 million views and garnering more than 350,000 likes. The content was a sharp, satirical critique of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government.
In the sketch, Adhikary played the role of a common citizen attempting to cast his vote. The narrative depicted a local figure—characterized as a TMC “goon”—bullying voters to cast their ballots exclusively for the ruling party, threatening dire consequences for non-compliance.
The video did not stop at satire; it utilized flashbacks to highlight what Adhikary portrayed as the deteriorating condition of the state. These scenes referenced sensitive socio-political issues, including the plight of 26,000 government teachers who had lost their jobs, emphasizing the emotional devastation they faced. Another poignant scene depicted a woman walking alone at night, being stalked by men, symbolizing the issue of women's safety.
Perhaps most provocatively, the reel referenced the infamous RG Kar rape-murder case involving a 34-year-old doctor. The video touched upon the outcome where a Kolkata court sentenced the convict, Sanjay Roy, to imprisonment for life and directed the state to pay ₹17 lakh as compensation to the grieving parents—a compensation the parents famously rejected, stating they wanted justice, not money.
Because the video directly targeted the current administration so close to the elections, many observers felt its timing was politically explosive. Almost immediately after it went viral, the political machinery began to react.

Ruling Party Alleges Political Agenda
The reaction from the ruling party was swift. Following the viral success of the video and the subsequent arrest, several leaders and supporters of the TMC began to allege that Adhikary was not acting independently. They propagated the view that he was affiliated with the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and that his content was politically motivated rather than genuine social commentary.
TMC spokesperson Riju Dutta issued a strong rebuttal on social media, labeling the influencer a “BJP YouTuber.” In a pointed post, Dutta noted the irony of the situation, remarking that the very person who had publicly accused the West Bengal government of failing to protect women was now himself booked for outraging the modesty of a woman and physical assault.
Dutta provided a detailed breakdown of the legal sections included in the case, emphasizing that the complainant had alleged confinement for nearly 12 hours, alongside physical assault and intimidation. In a controversial addition to his statement, he attempted to link Adhikary directly to the BJP’s IT Cell chief, Amit Malviya, asserting that “people misusing women join the BJP.”
Currently, the TMC maintains that this is a clear-cut criminal case involving serious offenses against a woman, and that the opposition is unnecessarily painting it with a political brush to distract from the accused's alleged actions.

Opposition Raises Doubts Over Timing and Intent
Conversely, the arrest has been met with deep skepticism by BJP supporters and various other influencers. They have raised pointed questions regarding the timing of the police action. The prevailing sentiment among these groups is that the case could be politically motivated retribution, specifically triggered by Adhikary’s reel that heavily criticized the state government.
Some theories circulating on social media go as far as to suggest that the sexual assault complaint might be fabricated, designed specifically to silence a vocal critic. Proponents of this view argue that the proximity of the arrest to the viral video—and the upcoming elections—is too coincidental to be ignored.
Amit Malviya, the head of the BJP’s IT Cell, launched a scathing attack on the Mamata Banerjee-led government in response to the arrest. Taking to social media, he declared that West Bengal had been transformed into a “dictatorial regime” where critics are routinely targeted with fake and malicious FIRs.
Malviya claimed that activists and independent voices who cause embarrassment to the ruling party are systematically subjected to character assassination and police harassment. Regarding the specific allegations against Adhikary, he questioned why the details of the incident were not public knowledge sooner and asked why the complainant had remained silent until now.
In a forceful statement, Malviya said: “This is the TMC’s model of governance: Muzzle free speech, intimidate critics, weaponise the police and destroy reputations to stay in power.”
He continued his condemnation, warning the ruling party of the public sentiment: “But Bengal is watching. And Bengal will not stay silent. BJP will stand with every individual victimised by Mamata Banerjee‘s regime.”
Concluding his statement, he added: “Together with the people of West Bengal, we will defeat fear, expose abuse of power, and restore democracy. This is not justice. This is political persecution. And it will end.”
Broader Implications and Online Support
The controversy has rippled through the digital community, with Adhikary receiving backing from fellow content creators and social media users. One user on X (formerly Twitter) posed a fundamental question, asking why influencers who dare to speak on social and political matters in West Bengal seem to face legal repercussions. He further queried why there was a lack of public outrage regarding such targeted actions.
Supporters of the influencer argue that raising legitimate concerns about governance, employment, and women’s safety is a core democratic right. They contend that exercising this right should not lead to legal harassment or imprisonment. On the other side of the debate, critics argue that serious criminal allegations—especially those involving sexual violence—must be treated with the utmost seriousness and investigated on their own merits, independent of any political noise.
The matter has undeniably transcended the boundaries of a typical criminal investigation, entering the volatile arena of election politics. With the polls drawing near, every development in this case is being scrutinized through a partisan lens.
As it stands, Shamik Adhikary has not released any public statement regarding the charges. The trajectory of the court proceedings in the coming days, along with the findings of the police investigation, will be critical in determining the truth.
What began as a complaint regarding a heinous crime has morphed into a complex political debate. It has raised uncomfortable questions not only about the specific charges against the accused but also about the state of freedom of expression, the intensity of political rivalry, and the powerful, often polarizing role of social media in the heat of an election season.
