Sundar Pichai says India will have an extraordinary AI trajectory as Google invests fifteen billion dollars and builds a massive Vizag data center to partner in this bold national digital journey

Google has made its intentions clear at the India AI Impact Summit in Delhi. The company is not just observing India’s rise in artificial intelligence. It is investing heavily and placing the country at the center of its future plans. In a recent blog post shared by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, the global technology company outlined its roadmap for India. The post explains Google’s deep and growing collaboration with Indian authorities as well as private sector partners to build what it calls an inclusive and strong AI infrastructure.

At the heart of Google’s plan is a major financial commitment. The company has announced a $15 billion investment over the next five years. This investment is focused on building foundational AI infrastructure across India. One of the most important parts of this plan is the construction of Google’s largest AI data centre hub outside the United States. This facility will be located in Visakhapatnam, also known as Vizag. The new hub is expected to strengthen computing capacity in India, offering greater support to researchers, startups, businesses, and public service systems.
The move fits into Google’s broader full stack strategy. This approach allows the company to support every layer of the AI ecosystem, from cloud services to advanced AI models such as Gemini. Gemini, Google’s next generation AI model, has been positioned as a key technology in this expansion. Through these investments, Google aims to provide India with the technical backbone needed to scale AI solutions across different sectors.
Google’s DeepMind division, known globally for its scientific breakthroughs, is also playing an important role in India’s AI development. DeepMind, which won the Nobel Prize, is working closely with the Government of India. The collaboration focuses on advancing scientific discovery, supporting students through AI based education tools, and applying artificial intelligence in critical sectors such as agriculture and renewable energy. The involvement of DeepMind signals that this is not just a financial investment but also a technical partnership at the highest level.

DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, who won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with his colleague John Jumper for the revolutionary AlphaFold technology, is currently in India to attend the AI Impact Summit. During the summit, he spoke about Artificial General Intelligence, often referred to as AGI, and shared DeepMind’s plans to integrate AlphaFold with Gemini. AlphaFold, which has transformed the understanding of protein structures in biology, has already been widely covered in international scientific reports, including those published by Nature and other leading journals. Its potential integration with Gemini points to future breakthroughs at the intersection of science and AI.
Connectivity is another major part of Google’s plan. The company has announced new fibre optic routes under the America India Connect project. This initiative aims to strengthen digital connectivity between the United States and India, while also improving network reach, reliability, and resilience across multiple locations in the Southern Hemisphere. Stronger data links are critical as AI systems require high speed and stable internet infrastructure to function efficiently.
Beyond infrastructure, Google has also launched two major global challenges. Each of these carries a reward of $30 million. The first is the AI For Government Innovation Impact Challenge, and the second is the AI For Science Impact Challenge. These challenges are designed to encourage innovation and problem solving using artificial intelligence in both public administration and scientific research.
The Google Centre of Climate Technology is also working with the office of the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India. The goal is to accelerate research and encourage the adoption of scalable AI powered climate solutions. As climate change remains one of the most urgent global issues, this partnership focuses on using technology to provide practical and measurable solutions.

The blog post further mentions several India focused initiatives. One of them is Google’s partnership with Karmayogi Bharat. This collaboration supports Mission Karmayogi’s vision of building a future ready civil service in India. Under this arrangement, Google Cloud provides secure and resilient infrastructure for the iGOT Karmayogi platform. The platform currently supports over 20 million public servants across more than 800 districts. This wide reach shows how AI and digital infrastructure are being integrated directly into governance and public administration.
Language diversity in India has also been addressed through Google’s technology. The company highlighted its live speech to speech translation feature, which allows real time translated conversations in over 70 languages. Among these are 10 Indic languages, including Bengali, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. In a country with vast linguistic diversity, such tools can help reduce communication barriers and support digital inclusion.
India is already Google’s biggest market by user volume. With a population of more than a billion people, the country represents both scale and opportunity. For Google, India is not only a growing digital market but also a partner in shaping the future of artificial intelligence. The company’s recent announcements reflect a long term commitment to inclusive growth and rapid development.
In his message at the summit, Sundar Pichai summed up the company’s position clearly. He wrote, “At the AI impact summit our message is clear: we believe India is going to have an extraordinary trajectory with AI, and we want to be a partner”.
This statement captures the larger vision behind Google’s investment and collaborations in India. It reflects confidence in the country’s potential and a desire to walk alongside it in the next chapter of technological progress.
