"बरस भी अभी नहीं गुज़रा, कितनी जल्दी बदल गए चेहरे": National shooter Tara Shahdeo calls The Kerala Story 2 eye-opening, recalling her Ranchi Love Jihad ordeal where Raqibul Hasan got a life sentence for forced conversion after hiding his Muslim identity

One of the most startling revelations from Shahdeo involves the high-profile nature of her marriage's beginning.

Renowned Athlete Tara Shahdeo Describes ‘The Kerala Story 2’ as a Necessary Wake-Up Call, Reeling from Her Ten-Year Battle Against Coerced Conversion

NEW DELHI: The harrowing intersection of cinema and reality has taken center stage as Tara Shahdeo, a decorated national-level shooter, breaks her silence regarding her traumatic 2014 marriage. As the public prepares for the release of the cinematic sequel, ‘The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond,’ Shahdeo is drawing direct parallels between the film's scripted struggles and her own decade-long fight for justice. Reflecting on the legal marathon she endured, the athlete noted that the film’s difficult subject matter deeply echoes her lived experience.

The terminology surrounding her ordeal was something Shahdeo only grasped after the damage was done. She recalled that her introduction to the phrase ‘love jihad’ came through the lens of public reporting after her wedding had already taken place. “That was the first time I heard the word ‘Love Jihad’ through the media. At that time, I didn’t even know what the word meant,” she said. In the early days of her legal fight, she held onto the hope that the judicial system would move with urgency. She added that she initially believed justice would be swift and that punishment for the accused would deter similar incidents.

The roots of this case stretch back to July 2014, a time when Shahdeo believed she was starting a life with a man named Ranjeet Singh Kohli. She later discovered his true identity was Raqibul Hasan. Investigations by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) painted a grim picture of the union; the agency alleged that Shahdeo was intentionally deceived regarding her husband’s background and faith. Following the wedding, she was reportedly subjected to intense physical torture and relentless pressure to convert to Islam.

The wheels of justice turned slowly, spanning nearly ten years. It was only in October 2023 that a Special CBI Court in Ranchi finally handed down a definitive verdict. The court sentenced Shahdeo’s former husband, Raqibul Hasan, to life imprisonment for his crimes. The accountability extended to his family and associates as well, with his mother and a local registrar also receiving prison sentences for their roles in the ordeal.

Beyond the courtroom, Shahdeo is now addressing the heavy social burden placed on women who survive such experiences. She pointed out that many victims choose to suffer in the shadows because of the harsh judgment they face from the public. “More than half of society believes that the girl was misled and did whatever she wanted. This is not just a matter of a girl’s mistake or a family’s weakness,” she explained. She voiced a profound sense of regret, suggesting that if society had been more open to discussing these dangers, her years of suffering might have been avoided.

“If we are showing that topic to society, then I don’t think it is any cruelty or nonsense. These are the things that we never want to discuss. If there had been a discussion in our house, then we would not have been victims of it. So, I think this story like Kerala Story is an eye-opening for us. Some things in it are dirty, which you say in the language is dirty, is nonsense. So, that is what is happening with us,” she stated.

One of the most startling revelations from Shahdeo involves the high-profile nature of her marriage's beginning. Far from a whirlwind romance, her marriage was a calculated arrangement supported by respected members of the community. She emphasized that her family was diligent, seeking a suitable match through trusted channels.

“The thing that you don’t like to see, that is happening with the girls of your society. In my case, there was a judge who brought my marriage proposal for that person. So, my story was different. I was not blinded by love. My family investigated. So, his friends were Hindus, DSP, rank. The Advocate General was his friend. He was a reputed person. He showed himself in the scenario. And every parent wants you to go to a good house. Then on the judge’s request, we got married. On the second day of our marriage, the same judge told me to get married because the boy with whom I got married, his name was Ranjit Singh. Then he became Raqib-ul-Hassan. Then, from there, the story of struggle starts,” she shared. She noted with a heavy heart that it took her nine long years to finally prove her case in a court of law.

Shahdeo’s testimony arrives at a time of intense national debate surrounding ‘The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond.’ The film serves as the successor to the controversial 2023 hit, ‘The Kerala Story.’ Directed by National Award winner Kamakhya Narayan Singh and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s Sunshine Pictures, the movie is set to hit theaters on February 27, 2026. The director has stood firmly by his work, asserting that if he had portrayed anything false or misleading, he would “leave filmmaking.”

The movie features Ulka Gupta, Aditi Bhatia, and Aishwarya Ojha in the primary roles. The plot traces the journey of three young women who find themselves trapped in deceptive marriages and confront the reality of forced religious conversions.

Since the trailer's debut, the sequel has been a lightning rod for criticism and praise alike. While opposition leaders and various celebrities have labeled the production as “propaganda,” the creative team insists the narrative is firmly rooted in extensive research and real-life occurrences.

Despite the controversy, Shahdeo remains adamant that bringing these stories to light is a societal necessity rather than a choice. “If these discussions had happened in our homes earlier, we would not have been victims,” she reiterated, describing projects like ‘The Kerala Story’ as vital, “eye-opening” contributions to public awareness.
