Top Lashkar Operative Shabbir Ahmad Lone Captured at Delhi Border; Foiled Plot Aimed to Launch ISI-Backed Attacks via Bangladesh

On Monday, March 30th, law enforcement authorities announced a significant breakthrough in national security. Shabbir Ahmad Lone, a known terrorist associated with the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) extremist group, was successfully apprehended at the Delhi border. Lone, who is also known in intelligence circles by the aliases "Raja" and "Kashmiri," originally hails from Kangan, a town located in the Srinagar district of Jammu and Kashmir.

This crucial arrest was the result of a highly coordinated operation. The Special Cell of the Delhi Police collaborated closely with various central intelligence agencies to track him down. Officials took him into custody because they strongly suspected him of managing large-scale terror operations aimed at destabilizing India. According to the investigation, he was running a widespread sleeper-cell network and plotting these assaults not from within India, but by operating out of neighboring Bangladesh.

The ongoing probe has revealed that Lone was functioning as the mastermind behind Lashkar-e-Taiba’s anti-India campaigns across the border. His actions were directly guided and commanded by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). His primary responsibility was to recruit foot soldiers, specifically targeting Bangladeshi citizens as well as individuals who had already illegally infiltrated India. The strategy behind this recruitment was carefully calculated: by using operatives from Bangladesh, the terror group intended to carry out violent attacks while completely concealing any evidence of Pakistan’s involvement. Furthermore, officials stated that Lone was highly active in distributing anti-national propaganda. To create local unrest and manipulate the feelings of the general public, he organized the display of highly offensive, anti-India posters across multiple locations.

This is not the first time law enforcement has crossed paths with Lone. Going back to the year 2007, the Special Cell arrested him on severe terrorism charges. During that specific operation, police recovered a massive supply of weapons and ammunition from his possession, which included deadly grenades and an AK-47 assault rifle. Following that arrest, authorities thoroughly confirmed that Lone had direct, high-level connections to some of the most notorious figures in terrorism, specifically Hafiz Saeed and Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, the co-founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Despite the severity of his past criminal record, Lone was granted bail in 2018. Taking advantage of his temporary freedom, he escaped the country just a year later in 2019, making his way into Bangladesh. Once he settled there, he established a brand-new terror cell to continue his operations. Security officials describe him as an incredibly skilled and experienced Lashkar operative. Over the course of his criminal career, he successfully completed both basic and advanced combat training at a well-known terror camp situated in Muzaffarabad. In total, his deep-rooted connections with the highest levels of leadership within this terrorist organization span an alarming twenty years.

The way Lone operated points to a highly organized, cross-border system. In this strategic setup, field agents were stationed in Bangladesh, while their controlling handlers remained safely hidden in Pakistan. Currently, intelligence agencies are subjecting Lone to intense questioning. Their main objective is to completely unravel this entire hidden network. Investigators are working tirelessly to identify exactly where their financial funding is coming from, how they recruit new members, and which specific locations in India they were targeting for future attacks.

Lone's arrest is a critical part of a larger, ongoing security crackdown. Just a few days prior to this fresh development, security forces exposed another dangerous module affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba. This particular group was found to be operating across Delhi and various parts of South India. Reports confirm that the perpetrators of this network were primarily Bangladeshi nationals who had been living in India under completely false pretenses. Before being caught, they were actively laying the operational groundwork for future activities. Much like Lone's strategy, they also attempted to spread harmful propaganda by hanging anti-national posters in prominent areas of both Delhi and Kolkata.

The intelligence gathering leading up to these arrests has been thorough and relentless. Back in February, the Special Cell acted on specific tip-offs and launched a series of targeted searches in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. These raids resulted in the seizure of highly incriminating evidence. Officers confiscated mobile phones, forged identification documents, bank cards, and posters promoting Pakistan. Most alarmingly, officials discovered video footage on these seized devices. The videos proved that the suspects had been conducting active reconnaissance and surveillance on highly sensitive locations in Delhi, including the historic Red Fort as well as several important religious monuments.

Meanwhile, the security agencies are refusing to slow their momentum. They are actively pursuing other major terror kingpins who have established connections to Delhi. A major, concerted effort is currently underway to track down Sheikh Sajjad Gul. His criminal history with Indian authorities is extensive; he was originally captured at the Nizamuddin railway station in Delhi back in 2002. After being found guilty in 2003, he spent more than ten years locked up in Tihar Jail. However, following his release in 2017, Gul managed to flee to Pakistan. Today, authorities say he is stationed there, actively leading "The Resistance Front" (TRF), which operates as a direct front group for Lashkar-e-Taiba. Under his command, the TRF has been responsible for carrying out numerous deadly terror attacks, which notably includes the tragic Pahalgam massacre.
