Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has just approved a massive ₹1,196 crore twin-tube tunnel at Ladakh's Fotu La Pass, permanently guaranteeing safe all-weather connectivity on the Uri-Srinagar-Leh highway

In a monumental step toward strengthening the transportation network in the breathtaking but rugged terrain of Ladakh, the central government has greenlit a massive infrastructure initiative. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari took to his official X account on Friday, March 27th, to announce the approval of a highly anticipated tunnel project at Fotu La Pass, located on National Highway-1. Backed by a substantial budget of ₹1,196.22 crore, this engineering endeavor aims to permanently transform the travel experience in the region.

The blueprint reveals that the structure will be a unidirectional twin-tube tunnel, complete with carefully designed approach roads. The primary objective behind this massive investment is to guarantee a seamless and uninterrupted journey along the crucial Uri-Srinagar-Leh highway, a route that serves as an absolute lifeline for both local residents and national security forces.
Navigating Fotu La Pass has always been a formidable task for drivers. Perched at a staggering altitude of over 4,100 meters, it is widely regarded as one of the most demanding sections of NH-1. As the harsh Himalayan winter sets in, this specific stretch routinely falls victim to heavy, unyielding snowfall and treacherous layers of ice, frequently bringing vehicular movement to a complete standstill.
Underlining the critical nature of this new development, the Union Minister shared specific details with the public online. “In the Union Territory of Ladakh, we have approved Rs 1,196.22 crore for the construction of a unidirectional twin-tube tunnel, along with approach roads, across Fotu La Pass on National Highway 1.” He further pointed out the sheer elevation of the route, noting that the highway crosses Fotu La at a breathtaking height of approximately 4,108 meters, which officially makes it the highest point on this vital travel corridor.

Blueprint specifics and anticipated advantages
Looking closer at the architectural layout, the entire development will span a total distance of approximately 2.65 kilometers. Breaking this down, the actual tunnel will cover about 1.96 kilometers of that distance, while the connecting approach roads will make up the remaining 0.69 kilometers. Once the construction crews wrap up their work and the tunnel officially opens to the public, commuters can look forward to shaving off about 8.5 kilometers from their usual travel distance.
For years, travelers have had to brave the current, perilous route just to cross the region. Minister Gadkari accurately captured the daily reality of navigating this path, describing the existing road as having “steep gradients, multiple hairpin bends, and frequent winter closures due to heavy snowfall and icing.”
However, the introduction of this state-of-the-art tunnel is designed to effectively eliminate these persistent geographical hurdles. By bypassing the most dangerous, weather-beaten sections of the pass, the project promises to deliver a travel experience that is not only noticeably faster but infinitely safer for daily commuters and freight transporters alike. Summarizing the ultimate goal of the initiative, Gadkari stated, “To address these challenges, the tunnel project… will ensure safer, all-weather connectivity. Once completed, it will reduce travel distance by 8.5 km, delivering significant strategic and logistical benefits,”

Regional figures applaud the decision
The announcement from the capital has been met with widespread enthusiasm from key figures representing the northern territory. The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, VK Saxena, warmly received the news and extended his appreciation to the Union Minister for prioritizing the area's development. Sharing his optimistic outlook on what this means for the local economy, he noted, “This project will significantly boost road infrastructure and tourism in Ladakh,”
Echoing this sentiment of profound gratitude, Mohd Haneefa, the Member of Parliament representing Ladakh, also stepped forward to voice his wholehearted approval. He commended the leadership in New Delhi for recognizing the needs of the mountain communities, stating, “I extend my sincere gratitude to Hon’ble Union Minister Nitin Gadkari ji for approving the Rs 1,196.22 crore Fotu La tunnel project… Under your leadership, India’s road infrastructure has witnessed remarkable progress.”
In closing his remarks, the MP also made sure to express his deep appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He credited the Prime Minister's unwavering support for making such large-scale improvements a reality, emphasizing that this tunnel will ultimately secure safer transit and yield life-changing, long-term benefits for the people of Ladakh.
