"नौ दो ग्याराह": Following a massive police raid at Aligarh Muslim University that uncovered illegal weapons and fake currency, absconding student Shahbaz faces serious charges for faking his admission multiple times

A routine investigation into a recent act of public violence has peeled back the layers of a deeply concerning criminal operation operating right out of a university dormitory. On Wednesday, the 8th of April, law enforcement authorities uncovered a shocking cache of incriminating evidence—ranging from illegal ammunition to counterfeit currency—hidden away in a student hostel room at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Uttar Pradesh.

The search of the campus premises was triggered by a recent shooting incident that took place in the nearby Civil Lines area of Aligarh. Upon reaching the university, investigators focused their attention on a specific room. They soon discovered that the suspect, identified as Shahbaz, had been illegally occupying the space for several months. In a brazen display of intimidation, he had forcefully evicted the lawful occupants assigned to the room to set up his own base of operations.
The revelations about Shahbaz's background only grew more alarming as the university administration began digging into his academic files. AMU Proctor Mohammad Nawed Khan stepped forward to shed light on how the suspect managed to embed himself within the institution.
Speaking on the initial findings, Proctor Khan stated, “We checked our records about the student, Shahbaz and found that he had taken admission in the university at 2 different times. We have 2 different enrollment numbers for him. We further investigated the matter and uncovered that his initial admission was in diploma engineering mechanical, and he subsequently gained admission into the MCA program using degrees from another institution.”
|
This discovery of dual enrollment was only the tip of the iceberg. As university officials accompanied law enforcement during the hostel raid, the full scale of Shahbaz's deceptive practices came into sharp focus. A trove of forged paperwork was found scattered throughout the room.
Detailing the severity of the academic fraud, Khan further highlighted, “We entered the room with the authorities and discovered additional certificates and documents that had been seized by the cops. We also found two-mark sheets related to AMU pertaining to high school and 12th grade. Upon examination, we determined that these documents were fraudulent. Shahbaz had utilised someone else’s paperwork and superimposed his name onto them. The controller of examinations also confirmed that no individual by his name had passed the examination that year from the institution. We gathered all the information and suspended him. He is prohibited from entering the university’s premises.”
Beyond the academic deception, the physical items recovered from the room painted a picture of a highly dangerous individual involved in severe criminal activities. The presence of lethal weapons and fake money inside a place of learning has raised serious security concerns.
Elaborating on the illegal stash and the fate of the room's other occupants, the Proctor added, “The authorities discovered magazines for two pistols, live cartridges for a 12 bore, and empty shells for a 32 bore, in addition to counterfeit currency. The police also interviewed the boys who were officially assigned to that room but were not permitted to remain there. One boy residing in the room with Shahbaz is currently evading capture, while the other was summoned by the police for questioning and subsequently released.”

The trail leading to Shahbaz's room was uncovered through diligent police work following the earlier shooting incident. Authorities successfully captured three suspects in connection to the violent event. Among those apprehended was an individual named Ashraf, originally from Chhatari in Bulandshahr, who had been living at the Suleman Hall. Through intense interrogation of the suspects and a careful review of nearby CCTV footage, the police were able to definitively identify Shahbaz—a native of Shahanshabad in Aligarh—as a key figure in the network.
When investigators finally cataloged the entire stash of illicit weaponry recovered from the hostel, the sheer volume was staggering. The inventory included two empty magazines, four empty 32-bore handguns, one standalone bullet cartridge, four live 12-bore cartridges, a number of 315-bore shells, and multiple other empty shells. A massive search operation is currently actively underway to locate and apprehend the absconding Shahbaz.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Neeraj Kumar Jadaun provided insights into the ongoing technical investigation, confirming that the suspect's digital footprint is now under heavy scrutiny.
SSP Jadaun informed the press, “Call detail records (CDR) of the accused are being analysed, and a laptop is being examined. It has come to light that Shahbaz used multiple identities in different documents, which are currently being verified.” In addition to the weaponry, the police seizures highlighted a sophisticated fraud operation. Authorities confiscated eight cell phones, a Dell laptop, a digital notepad, and an astonishing 26 different certificates—a mix of authentic and entirely fabricated documents. Furthermore, bundles of counterfeit banknotes in denominations of 500 and 100 were retrieved from the suspect's belongings.

This breakthrough recovery was the result of a coordinated effort. A joint team comprising officers from both the Quarsi police station and the Civil Lines division carried out the search operation. Their actions were directly tied to an initial First Information Report (FIR) filed in Quarsi on the 7th of April concerning the earlier firing case. That original FIR laid down heavy charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), specifically sections 191 (2) for rioting, 191 (3) for rioting armed with lethal weapons, 190 for unlawful assembly, 109 (1) for an attempt to murder, and 3 (5) indicating a criminal act done by several persons with a common intention.
However, the startling discoveries made inside the AMU hostel room have now triggered a completely separate legal action. A new case has been registered at the Civil Lines police station to address the forgery and the dangerous contraband. This second FIR invokes strict BNS sections, including 179 for the possession of fake documents, 180 for the active use of forged documents, 318 (4) for cheating, 338 for causing severe hurt by conduct that endangers life, and 336 (3) for acts endangering the life or personal safety of others. Furthermore, stringent provisions of the Arms Act have been applied, tightening the legal net around the fugitive student.
