South Delhi Double Homicide Stems From Old Feud; One Survives With Injuries As Police Probe Continues

On a Friday evening, the usually quiet and highly secure neighborhood of Tara Apartments in South Delhi’s Chittaranjan (CR) Park area became the grim setting for a brutal crime. The victims, 62-year-old Rakesh Sood and his 27-year-old son Karan Sood, were local residents living in the O Block of the complex and were professionally involved in property dealings.

According to police sources, the father and son, along with their cousin Rahul, were embroiled in an ongoing financial dispute with another resident. The accused, identified simply as Asad, lived just a short distance away in the F Block of the exact same residential society.

The simmering tension reached a violent climax at approximately 7:00 pm. Right outside the O Block, the three men were ambushed. Eyewitness accounts and chilling visual evidence from the scene painted a horrific picture, with blood scattered across the ground where the confrontation took place. Reputable news agencies, including the Press Trust of India (PTI), have corroborated that the tragic incident was the direct result of this long-standing enmity.

Panic swept through the community immediately following the assault. Desperate relatives hurried Rakesh, Karan, and Rahul to a private hospital located in nearby Saket. Around 9:30 pm, the hospital administration alerted the Delhi Police that three individuals with severe stab wounds had been brought to their emergency ward.

Tragically, the medical team was unable to save the father-son duo. Detailing the hospital's initial assessment, law enforcement released a statement confirming, "Upon examination, Rakesh Sood and Karan Sood were declared brought dead by doctors, while Rahul was found injured,". The cousin, Rahul, is currently undergoing intensive medical treatment for the severe wounds he sustained during the attack.

Prompted by the hospital's distress call, a dedicated police team rushed to the blood-stained spot at Tara Apartments to take control of the situation. They immediately cordoned off the area to preserve the integrity of the crime scene. Crime branch officials and forensic experts were called in to carry out a meticulous inspection and collect crucial physical evidence. Investigators are now closely analyzing the society's CCTV footage to piece together the exact sequence of events.

A formal case has been registered at the CR Park police station, and a thorough probe is actively underway. Authorities moved swiftly to apprehend the prime suspect based on preliminary findings. Confirming the arrest, the police stated, "The accused, identified as Asad, a resident of Tara Apartments, allegedly attacked the victims with a sharp-edged object. He has since been detained,". As reported by the Hindustan Times in their ground coverage, the swift detention was crucial as the suspect was actively attempting to abscond.

The shocking double murder in a locality widely regarded for its safety has triggered sharp political criticism regarding the national capital's deteriorating law and order situation. The opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was quick to target the Delhi Police over the brazen attack.

Taking to the social media platform X, Saurabh Bharadwaj—a former Aam Aadmi Party leader who serves as the party's Delhi president—voiced his deep dismay. Pointing out the traditionally high-profile nature of the neighborhood, he wrote, "Tara Apartments, Alaknanda was supposed to be safest gated colony in south delhi. Late Mrs Sushma Swaraj and many MPs stayed there for years."

He did not hold back in his critique of the broader implications of this tragedy, adding, "Double murder says a lot about the worsening law and order of Delhi." Expressing severe dissatisfaction with the top brass of the police force, Bharadwaj concluded his online remarks by stating, "Needless to say, current Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha has proven to be quite incompetent,".
