Intruders Breached Locks, Veiled Women Issued Threats, and 250 Malicious Videos Deleted: Delhi High Court Orders Police Shield for Relatives of Holi Lynching Victim Tarun

To fully understand the gravity of the recent Delhi High Court orders, we must first establish the timeline of the tragic sequence of events that began earlier this spring.

A Festival Turned Fatal

The root of this devastating case traces back to Wednesday, March 4, the day of the Holi festival. According to the statements provided by both the police and the grieving family, the incident started with a completely unintentional mistake. An 11-year-old girl from Tarun Kumar’s family was celebrating on her rooftop. She playfully threw a water balloon, aiming for her father who was standing on the ground below. Unfortunately, the balloon missed its intended target and landed on the street, splashing water onto a Muslim woman who lived in the same neighborhood. This accident sparked an immediate argument between the two households.

Attempting to de-escalate the situation, the Hindu family, along with the young girl, offered a sincere apology. At that moment, the dispute seemed to have been entirely resolved. However, the peace was strictly temporary. Later that evening, Tarun was riding his motorcycle back home after celebrating the festival with a friend. His journey was abruptly cut short when he was intercepted by a mob consisting of 15 to 20 individuals from the Muslim community. The group launched a merciless attack, brutally assaulting Tarun with heavy stones, bricks, iron rods, and various other makeshift weapons. When his family members and bystanders desperately rushed in to try and save him, they were also subjected to severe beatings by the attackers. Tarun was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, but the trauma was too severe. He tragically succumbed to his extensive injuries the very next day.

A Campaign of Intimidation

The nightmare for Tarun’s family did not end with his passing. In the weeks that followed, they were subjected to a targeted campaign of harassment, forcing them to live in constant fear. On April 4, 2026, an unidentified man aggressively broke the locks on the gate of their residence and looted their belongings.

The intimidation escalated just over a week later. On April 13, 2026, a group of unknown women, whose faces were fully covered by veils, arrived at the family's doorstep to deliver severe verbal threats. Despite their attempts to hide their identities, the grieving family managed to recognize one of the veiled women. They identified her as the wife of the very same man who had forcefully broken their locks and stolen from them on April 4.

The High Court Intervenes for Protection

Driven by this relentless harassment and fearing for their lives, Tarun’s mother and other surviving relatives filed an urgent petition. They approached the Delhi High Court, pleading for strict directions to compel the Delhi Police to guarantee their physical safety. Additionally, they demanded the immediate deletion of numerous inflammatory and threatening videos related to Tarun's murder that were circulating widely on social media platforms.

The matter was formally heard on Thursday, April 23, 2026. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the Delhi High Court stepped in with decisive action. The legal counsel representing the Delhi government stood before the court and made a firm commitment regarding the family's safety, formally submitting that the Delhi Police are actively ensuring the best possible protection to the petitioners.

To provide a concrete breakdown of these safety measures, Niharika Bhatt, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for Dwarka, addressed the court directly. She presented a detailed security blueprint that had already been put into action. According to the Additional DCP, a comprehensive network of CCTV cameras has been actively installed to monitor the area. Furthermore, strategic police pickets have been established throughout the specific lane where the family resides, as well as in the surrounding neighborhood blocks. For maximum security, a dedicated police picket is now stationed directly in front of the victims' house. Addressing the digital harassment, Additional DCP Bhatt confirmed to the court that law enforcement had successfully identified and taken down approximately 250 sensitive and highly inflammatory videos from various social media networks.

Judicial Directives and Ongoing Investigations

Presiding over the hearing, Justice Girish Kathpalia carefully reviewed the police submissions alongside the desperate pleas of Tarun’s family. To bridge the gap between the victims and law enforcement, the Justice issued a practical and immediate directive. He instructed the Additional DCP to ensure that the local Station House Officer (SHO) provides his personal mobile phone number directly to the family. This guarantees that the victims have a direct, reliable line of communication to the highest local police authority in the event of any future distress or emergency. Furthermore, the High Court instructed the family to gather and hand over the specific details of any remaining offensive or sensitive online content directly to the local SHO so that it can be swiftly removed from the internet.

Meanwhile, the legal pursuit of justice for Tarun Kumar remains heavily active. The official First Information Report (FIR) registered in connection with this brutal lynching has formally named 22 individuals as accused perpetrators. Out of this group, the police have successfully tracked down and arrested 18 suspects. Law enforcement agencies are currently conducting ongoing search operations to locate and apprehend the 4 remaining accused individuals who are still absconding from the law.
