"आरंभ है प्रचंड, बोले मस्तकों के झुंड": India defeats Chinese map tactics by offsetting fabricated naming attempts and permanently mapping 27 crucial Arunachal locations like Longju, Thag La, and Jaswant Garh in Survey of India records

In international relations and defense analysis, these tactics are widely characterized as "salami slicing" and "cartographic aggression."

Strategic Counter-Response: How India Is Neutralizing Beijing’s Regional Naming Strategy in Arunachal Pradesh

In a significant national security and administrative development, the Government of India has taken a decisive step to reinforce its territorial integrity and state sovereignty. Following detailed consultations with the Government of Arunachal Pradesh and under the direct supervision of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the country's principal mapping agency, the Survey of India, has formally incorporated 27 critical and strategic locations of Arunachal Pradesh into the official national map of India.

Every single location within this update has been documented using its legitimate, local, and authentic name. This strategic move directly counters long-standing attempts by neighboring China to assert unsubstantiated territorial claims over portions of Arunachal Pradesh through the publication of artificial, fabricated Chinese names.

Rather than serving as a simple clerical task of updating geographical records, this measure provides a robust, institutional, and lasting countermeasure against China’s practice of cartographic aggression and map-based maneuvers. Beyond conferring legal and constitutional backing to the distinct identity of these remote border zones, the update ensures that accurate geographical information is permanently recorded for military forces, local administrative bodies, and citizens alike.

China’s Regional Naming Strategy and India’s Strategic Counter-Response

China has consistently pursued a calculated strategy targeting Arunachal Pradesh—a region it refers to as "Zangnan" or "South Tibet"—by attempting to systematically assign its own names to local geographic features.

China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs initiated this practice in 2017 by releasing its first list containing so-called Chinese names for six locations in Arunachal Pradesh. Beijing escalated this campaign over time, releasing fake names for 15 locations in 2021, 11 locations in 2023, and an additional 30 locations in March 2024.

In international relations and defense analysis, these tactics are widely characterized as "salami slicing" and "cartographic aggression." Through these methods, China attempts to manufacture paper-based ambiguity to present a false narrative of historical control over these territories to the international community.

The Government of India has consistently and categorically rejected these unilateral assertions, maintaining that the external publication of artificial names does not alter the underlying ground reality of Arunachal Pradesh.

Historical Context: The Initial 1959 Flashpoint and Core Theaters of the 1962 Conflict

A substantial number of the 27 sites included in the updated Survey of India map carry deep historical significance within the broader history of the India-China border issue. Among these, the location of Longju, situated along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), stands out as particularly notable.

Longju was the site of the first major military clash between the two nations in 1959—three years prior to the 1962 Sino-Indian War—occurring when Chinese military forces attempted to cross into Indian territory. In close proximity to Longju lies the village of Maja in the Upper Subansiri district, which has also been formally emphasized in the updated official map.

Further to the west, the strategic Thag La pass represents another highly sensitive location featured on the list. The Thag La pass and the adjoining Namka Chu valley are historically recognized as the sector from which China initiated a large-scale military offensive against India on October 20, 1962.

In addition to these prominent historical sites, several high-altitude, rugged mountain passes—specifically Dzo La, Riza La, and Pukur La—have been explicitly marked on the national map. These terrain features serve as crucial geographical points for patrolling, observation, and operational movement by Indian security forces.

India’s recent actions signal a transition from diplomatic statements and formal protests to active territorial documentation. By formally publishing these 27 locations under their authentic Indian designations within the official Survey of India repository, the nation has directly neutralized Beijing’s artificially constructed claims.

Historical Legacies: Commemorating Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat and Subedar Trilok Singh Thapa

The list authorized by the Government of India extends beyond natural geographic features, rivers, and high-altitude passes to include national memorials erected for Indian soldiers who died in the line of duty along the border. Among these, Jaswant Garh, positioned along the transit route to Tawang, has been formally recorded in the national geographic network.

Jaswant Garh honors the actions of Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat, recipient of the Maha Vir Chakra, during the 1962 war. Rifleman Rawat single-handedly resisted an advancing unit of the Chinese military for 72 hours, inflicting heavy casualties before his death in action.

The site of Jaswant Garh remains highly respected by local residents and military personnel. Similarly, the Sher-e-Thapa Memorial located in the upper region has been officially mapped by the Survey of India. This monument honors the leadership of Subedar Trilok Singh Thapa and his unit during heavy engagements near the Subansiri sector in the 1962 war. The formal mapping of these sites directly highlights the national commitment to preserving the memory of its border defense operations.

Logistical Routes and Border Settlement Recognition

Several of the newly mapped sites function as vital logistical nodes supporting the local population, regional administration, and military supply networks in Arunachal Pradesh. For example, Jairampur, located in the Changlang district, is explicitly highlighted in the official list.

Jairampur operates as a major strategic logistics hub facilitating the transport of equipment, provisions, and personnel toward eastern Arunachal Pradesh and the border with Myanmar.

Likewise, key administrative settlements such as Kamlang Nagar in the Lohit district—situated adjacent to the Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary—and Sunpura have been formally documented on the map. The updated geographic record also incorporates the high-altitude natural water body known as Sambho Sarovar.

Furthermore, populated villages across the region—including Bisa, Bara Kundan, Chota Kundan, Dhan Bari, Preetnagar, Bauddhamandir, Teritnagar, Ramnagar, Sagar, Padma, Jyotinagar, Baisakhi, Chota Ropuk, Bara Ropuk, and Shivaji Nagar—have been marked using their precise local names.

The inclusion of these inhabited areas provides formal recognition to the traditional identities and cultural heritage of local tribal communities residing in the border zones.

Legal and Administrative Foundations of Map Documentation

For any sovereign state, official national maps serve as primary instruments establishing territorial jurisdiction, legal rights, and administrative governance.

When the Survey of India officially registers a geographic feature using its authentic local name, that designation acquires formal administrative and legal status. This institutional process yields two distinct advantages:

  1. Domestic Uniformity: All government records, civil land registries, infrastructural plans, revenue records, and military operations will exclusively utilize these standardized, authentic names, eliminating administrative ambiguity.
  2. International Documentation: Should external entities present claims based on non-official maps at international or multilateral forums, India maintains verified, scientifically surveyed, and gazetted national maps as definitive evidence of territorial jurisdiction.

Defense and legal analysts emphasize that this comprehensive mapping initiative highlights a proactive strategy aimed at permanently documenting national boundaries.

Categorical Breakdown of the 27 Mapped Locations

The updated map published by the Survey of India encompasses 27 strategically significant sites, categorized across four primary geographical classifications:

  • Mountain Passes (4): Dzo La, Riza La, Pukur La, and Thag La.
  • Water Bodies (1): The high-altitude lake, Sambho Sarovar.
  • Historical Memorials (1): The Sher-e-Thapa Memorial.
  • Villages, Administrative Centers, and Settlements (21): Longju, Maja, Bisa, Bara Kundan, Chota Kundan, Dhan Bari, Preetnagar, Bauddhamandir, Jairampur, Teritnagar, Ramnagar, Jaswant Garh, Sagar, Padma, Jyotinagar, Baisakhi, Chota Ropuk, Bara Ropuk, Shivaji Nagar, Sunpura, and Kamlang Nagar.

All 27 sites have been systematically recorded within the national survey grid alongside their exact latitude and longitude coordinates and authentic Indian names, securing their official designations against external modification.

By officially incorporating these 27 locations into the national map, India reiterates its position that Arunachal Pradesh remains an integral, permanent, and indivisible part of the sovereign republic. Supported by ongoing border infrastructure developments—including all-weather roads, tunnels, bridges, Advanced Landing Grounds, and the Vibrant Villages Programme—this cartographic documentation reinforces India's broader security strategy along its international borders.
