On Wednesday, 2nd September, retired Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra was appointed as the first Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. The former senior commander of the Indian Air Force (IAF) steps into this top executive position as the governing body responsible for the Ayodhya Ram Mandir undertakes a thorough restructuring of its administrative framework.

Mishra hails from a middle-class family in the Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh, located close to Ayodhya, where his father served as a lecturer. His military journey began on 6th December 1986, when he was commissioned as a fighter pilot into the flying branch of the IAF. Over an illustrious career spanning more than 38 years, he established himself as a distinguished fighter combat leader and experimental test pilot, logging over 3,000 hours of military flying experience before retiring on 30th April this year.

Mishra holds advanced credentials from premier defence institutions across the globe. He graduated from the National Defence Academy in Pune, the Air Force Test Pilots School in Bengaluru, the Air Command and Staff College in the United States, and the Royal College of Defence Studies in the United Kingdom. During his active service, he commanded a front-line fighter squadron and served as chief test pilot at the Aircraft & Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE).

As an Air Officer, he subsequently commanded two frontline operational air bases. Over the years, he occupied several critical staff and policy appointments at Air Headquarters, serving as Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Projects), Principal Director of Air Staff Requirements (ASR), and Director of the Operational Planning and Assessment Group.

Mishra's career later saw him take on higher joint defence responsibilities. He served as Commandant of ASTE and Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff for Doctrine, Organisation and Training, before stepping up as Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Operations). In January 2025, he assumed command of the Western Air Command, one of the IAF’s most pivotal operational formations.

During this leadership tenure, he presided over “Operation Sindoor,” an offensive action that struck terrorist infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Mishra played an instrumental role in directing air drills and combat readiness throughout the critical campaign. In recognition of his exceptional military service, he has received numerous top decorations, including the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM), the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), and the prestigious Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal (SYSM). The Trust’s Strategic Choice and Mishra’s Core Mandate

With millions of devotees continuing to visit the holy shrine every day, the decision to appoint a veteran military leader reflects the trust's determination to reinforce crowd management, security protocols, infrastructure development, and overall operational discipline.

Mishra brings decades of high-level strategic planning, administrative competence, and organizational leadership forged in the defence forces. His ability to oversee complex, high-stakes public operations stems directly from extensive experience in large-scale personnel management, critical logistics, and defence administration. Throughout his service, he demonstrated a reliable track record in coordinating multi-agency efforts, maintaining security perimeters, handling high-density operations under intense pressure, and executing strict infrastructure and resource allocation plans.

As CEO of the temple complex, Mishra will oversee the daily management of the 70-acre Ram Janmabhoomi grounds. His mandate is centered on introducing professional corporate management practices while strictly safeguarding the spiritual sanctity of the sacred site. He will be responsible for creating seamless entry and exit protocols and efficient queue management systems to ensure the safety of massive crowds.

Furthermore, Mishra will supervise the ongoing construction phase across the broader temple estate, which encompasses auxiliary shrines and extensive pilgrim amenities. To maintain an impenetrable security perimeter, he will coordinate closely with the temple’s internal security teams, Uttar Pradesh State Police, and central security agencies. His portfolio also involves streamlining IT infrastructure, visitor facilitation centers, sanitation drives, and workforce administration.

This appointment marks a strategic shift toward institutional governance across India’s major religious centers. By bringing in a seasoned military commander, the trust seeks to establish standard operating procedures that meet global benchmarks for public venue administration. Mishra’s induction is expected to bolster ongoing efforts to transform Ayodhya into a world-class pilgrimage destination equipped to handle heavy seasonal influxes effortlessly.

The trust aims to reinforce public trust and operational transparency by placing a proven executive at the helm. Nripendra Mishra, Chairman of the Ram Mandir Construction Committee, had earlier highlighted that appointing a full-time CEO was essential to ensure modern professional management and transparency for the world's most high-profile temple project.

The Search and Appointment Process

The search for the temple's executive chief commenced on 6th July, when the trust constituted a three-member Search Committee headed by Justice (retired) Pramod Kohli, former Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court. The panel included retired nuclear scientist Dr. Suresh Avaran and retired Lieutenant General B. K. Chaturvedi.

The committee received a total of 5,585 applications from across India. Following extensive screening, 16 candidates were shortlisted and invited to Ayodhya for detailed in-person interviews on 11th and 12th August. The panel evaluated each candidate's career background, administrative track record, personality, and professional capabilities before recommending three final names: Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra, Major General Sanjay Pratap Singh Vishwasrao, and Shruti Bhardwaj. After a thorough review of the three finalists, the board of trustees officially selected Mishra as the first CEO.

In this capacity, the CEO will function as the primary executive authority overseeing all officers, employees, functionaries, and administrative staff. Along with maintaining strict adherence to all legal, statutory, and Trust Deed requirements, Mishra will spearhead the efficient day-to-day operations and long-term developmental roadmap of the trust.
