What initially started as a verbal objection to the public showing of a film on Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) accused Umar Khalid at Pondicherry University quickly degenerated into physical clashes on September 25. The disruption broke out when individuals linked with the Students' Federation of India (SFI), the Ambedkar Students' Association (ASA), and the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) assaulted members belonging to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

The university unit of the ABVP came forward to firmly denounce the physical confrontation. The student outfit stated that its workers were assaulted simply for raising objections against the presentation of the film "Prisoner Number 626710." Following the violence, two ABVP workers, identified as Suresh and Riya, sustained injuries severe enough to require hospitalisation. Law enforcement officers soon entered the educational campus to restore order and officially opened a formal probe into the clash.

The entire development poses serious questions directly to the governing authorities of Pondicherry University. Observers and student bodies are demanding to know how a documentary focusing entirely on Umar Khalid obtained authorization for an on-campus screening in the first place, and why administrators failed to act decisively once students raised immediate red flags against the event.

Providing details on the incident, ABVP leader Surya Saravanan noted that as soon as their workers arrived to question the appropriateness of the film, cadre from the ASA, SFI, and NSUI met them with aggressive intimidation, physical abuse, abusive language, and direct violence. Taking the matter further, the ABVP pointed to an alleged understanding between university officials and the three student factions, insisting on an objective, thorough probe into the chain of events.

The charges carry heavy gravity, particularly because the ABVP stated that female activists in their ranks faced targeted verbal abuse and inappropriate gestures during the scuffle. Because of this, the student union has called upon the central university administration to isolate and name every person involved and initiate strict punitive action through a transparent inquiry.

Why Was a Film on Umar Khalid Allowed on University Grounds?

This clash does not represent the first time that screenings of the film "Prisoner Number 626710" have caused friction across premier educational hubs in the country.

The ABVP has openly resisted similar events at multiple academic institutions, stating that higher education campuses must not be turned into arenas that glorify an individual facing serious national security charges. A previously scheduled screening at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru was called off and deferred, while parallel friction emerged surrounding attempted screenings at the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT-H) and the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) in Hyderabad.

At Pondicherry University, the dispute crossed over from peaceful disagreement into direct physical confrontation.

ABVP representatives maintain that their students only raised basic questions about why the university facilitated this screening, but were immediately confronted with threats and physical force. In light of this, the central administration must present clear answers clarifying who permitted the session and whether adequate security measures were put in place when grievances were first registered.

An academic institution is fundamentally created to encourage civil debate over conflicting perspectives. It should never serve as a ground where figures accused of coordinating communal violence in the nation's capital are lionized, nor should it become a space where students seeking accountability are intimidated or attacked.

Crucial Inquiries the University Authority Must Address

The ABVP has sharpened its focus on the campus leadership, questioning why clearance was granted for a film highlighting Umar Khalid, and why basic crowd control and protective arrangements were overlooked despite upfront objections. The group continues to press for institutional accountability, an impartial probe, and punitive steps against the attackers.

These demands arrive at a time when friction between student groups and the administration was already high. Prior to the screening, the ABVP had led sustained protests focusing on persistent lapses in campus infrastructure and basic amenities, including irregular drinking water supply, decaying hostel infrastructure, neglected sports amenities, and inadequate bus transit services. In pursuit of those demands, the group had previously staged an organized march and a sit-in demonstration right outside the university’s main administrative block.

Given this ongoing friction, the physical clash during the documentary event has escalated tensions between the student organization and the university management.

The Emerging Campus Polarization Over Umar Khalid

Umar Khalid has been kept under judicial custody under the UAPA in connection with the broader conspiracy investigation linked to the 2020 northeast Delhi communal riots. While the Delhi Police maintain that he played an active role in planning that conspiracy, the matter remains before the judiciary and does not represent an established verdict of guilt.

Even so, student organizations aligned with Left platforms and the Congress student wing continue to coordinate and back events spotlighting his legal battle, whereas the ABVP remains steadfast in resisting such initiatives nationwide.

Holding differing ideological perspectives falls squarely within standard political discourse on campus. Engaging in physical assaults does not.

University officials bear the immediate duty to penalize any individuals belonging to the SFI, ASA, or NSUI who took part in the violence. Before all else, the administration must provide transparency: it must clarify who authorized the screening, oversee an impartial fact-finding inquiry, secure campus video footage and relevant evidence, and bring the culprits to book.

The core dilemma emerging from the Pondicherry University episode goes well beyond the screening of a single film. The vital concern is whether any student collective can legitimately question the political actions of rival organizations without confronting intimidation, harassment, and violence.

For its part, the ABVP has declared that its agitations will continue unabated until a formal inquiry is completed and accountability is established.
