Sandeshkhali protests: No action against TMC leader Sheikh Shahajahan angers villagers, property of brother Sirajuddin Sheikh torched

In the heart of West Bengal's Sandeshkhali, the air was thick with tension and anger on Friday, February 23rd. The spark? The properties of Sirajuddin Sheikh, brother to the accused TMC leader Sheikh Shahajahan, were engulfed in flames by a furious crowd. This incident unfolded in the Kachari area of Bermazdoor, where the villagers took a stand against what they saw as injustice.

The root of the villagers' anger lies in their claim that Sirajuddin Sheikh, along with his associates, forcibly took over land that belonged to them. This accusation led them to protest. As the situation escalated, a significant number of police officers were dispatched to the scene, underscoring the gravity of the unrest.

Amidst the turmoil, attempts by leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to reach Sandeshkhali were thwarted. Notably, BJP MP Locket Chatterjee found herself detained by the police in Bhojerhat, highlighting the tense atmosphere.

The protestors, armed and determined, directed their ire towards thatched structures near a fishing yard in the Belmajur area of Sandeshkhali. Their actions were a clear message of frustration towards TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh and his brother Siraj. One protestor expressed their disillusionment with the police's inaction over the years, stating, "The police have done nothing for years. This is why we are doing everything to get our land and honour back."

The situation reached a boiling point when the mob pursued Sirajuddin Sheikh, forcing him to flee for his life. With sticks in hand, the agitated villagers chased him, leading to a dramatic escape by Sheikh on a motorcycle.

Following the outbreak of violence, the situation in Sandeshkhali saw the police stepping in an attempt to calm the protesters. The unrest, which also flared up on Thursday, February 2nd, was sparked by serious accusations against local TMC leaders. The allegations included sexual abuse and the forceful taking of land from villagers. In response to these grievances, demonstrations spread across several areas, with people rallying against TMC leaders. These protests gained momentum after DGP Rajeev Kumar's statement assuring that "the guilty would not be spared."

In a significant development reported by ANI, the Kolkata Police took action on Friday by stopping and detaining Bharatiya Janata Party MP Locket Chatterjee. She, along with a group of BJP leaders, was en route to the conflict-ridden area of Sandeshkhali. Amidst the ongoing tension, a dedicated team of women leaders from the BJP planned a visit to Sandeshkhali on the same day. This team included prominent figures such as Locket Chatterjee, MLA Agnimitra Paul, Madhuchandra Kar, the General Secretary & MLA, Vice-President Adv. Priyanka Tibrewal, State Secretaries Sonali Murmu and Falguni Patra, President of the Mahila Morcha, and Paromita Dutta, the Incharge of Mahila Morcha. Their intended visit underscores the political and social attention drawn by the ongoing crisis in Sandeshkhali.

Bengal: ED Intensifies Probe Against TMC Leader Sheikh Shahjahan with Raids Across Six Locations

In a significant escalation of the investigation into allegations of land grabbing, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched raids at nearly six locations across West Bengal. These actions are part of a focused effort against the now-absent Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan, signaling a serious turn in the ongoing case.

The operations are currently active, targeting the properties of Sheikh Shahjahan and other individuals implicated in the investigation. This move by the ED came swiftly, following the issuance of new summons for Shahjahan, compelling him to participate in the investigation scheduled for February 29.

Sources within the agency have disclosed that these raids are aligned with a new Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR), specifically concerning Sheikh Shahjahan and the accusations of illegal land acquisition that have been levied against him.

In a display of the operation's gravity, ED officials, supported by central forces, initiated these searches in the early hours, indicating the comprehensive nature of the investigation. This development marks a critical juncture in the case against the TMC leader, underscoring the authorities' commitment to addressing the allegations of land grabbing head-on.

In the previous month, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) undertook two distinct raids at various locations on separate occasions, tied to the Public Distribution System (PDS) scam. Among the sites searched was the residence of Sheikh Shahjahan in Sandeshkhali, highlighting the breadth of the agency's efforts to clamp down on corruption and illegal activities.

Further expanding their probe, the ED also targeted properties linked to a businessman from West Bengal known to be associated with Shahjahan. The operations covered his Howrah residence and additional sites in Sandeshkhali, indicating the extensive nature of the investigation.

The community in Sandeshkhali, part of the North 24 Parganas district, has voiced serious accusations against Shahjahan and his Trinamool Congress affiliates. Many women have come forward, alleging land grabbing and sexual assault, adding a layer of gravity to the situation. These allegations have sparked significant protests in Sandeshkhali, with calls intensifying for Shahjahan's arrest.

A notable incident on January 5 underscored the volatility surrounding these investigations. ED officials, en route to conduct searches at the homes of Shahjahan and another TMC leader, Shankar Adhya, faced violent opposition. Reportedly, around 200 locals, believed to be Shahjahan's supporters, obstructed the officials and accompanying armed forces, preventing access to Shahjahan's property. The confrontation resulted in injuries to two ED members.

This event has stirred a political controversy, leading to a war of words between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The BJP has criticized the state's law and order under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while the TMC accuses the ED of inciting local residents.

Following the altercation, the Ministry of Home Affairs demanded a comprehensive report from the West Bengal government, seeking clarity on the incident.

As for Sheikh Shahjahan, he remains elusive, successfully avoiding arrest by both state and central authorities. In response to the assault on ED officials, the Calcutta High Court has directed a joint Special Investigation Team (SIT), including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and West Bengal Police, to take up the case, marking a significant step in addressing the challenges faced by law enforcement in the region.

In an effort to tackle the complexities of the ongoing situation, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed, incorporating members from both central and state investigative bodies. This team has been tasked with a crucial mandate: to compile and present their investigative findings by the 12th of February, following the court's instructions.

The Background of the Controversy

On the 8th of February of this year, the streets of Sandeshkhali witnessed a powerful demonstration. Hundreds of women, united in their frustration and anger, protested against the injustices they faced – land grabbing, unpaid wages, and acts of sexual violence. The central figures accused of these heinous acts are Sheikh Shahjahan, a known Trinamool Congress enforcer, and his associates, Shiba Prasad Hazra and Uttam Sardar.

Driven by outrage, these women took a stand against Shahjahan's unlawfully acquired assets. Their actions included setting ablaze a poultry farm owned by Shiba Prasad Hazra. Their protest extended to surrounding the Sandeshkali police station, where they voiced a strong demand for the immediate arrest of the accused trio. This wave of agitation and demand for justice persisted in the village for three days, marking a significant moment of resistance.

In a subsequent development on the 17th of February, the police responded by arresting Shibu Prasad Hazra, one of the individuals implicated in the land grabbing and sexual exploitation cases in Sandeshkhali. Despite this action, Sheikh Shahjahan, the primary accused, continues to evade capture, remaining a fugitive from law enforcement authorities. This ongoing situation underscores the challenges faced by the community and the authorities in addressing and rectifying the deep-seated issues within Sandeshkhali.
