"अभी तो मैं जवान हूँ": In a decisive Badaun court verdict, judge Neha Garg sentenced 62-year-old faith healer Shakir Hussain to 10 years in prison for kidnapping, raping, and forcibly converting a Hindu woman in Kasganj's Jidhpura

In a significant judicial outcome in Uttar Pradesh, the Additional Sessions Judge/Fast Track Court (Crimes Against Women) in Badaun, presided over by Judge Neha Garg, convicted and sentenced a 62-year-old man named Shakir Hussain on July 20th. Hussain received a sentence of 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for holding a Hindu woman and her young daughter in captivity, subjecting the woman to repeated sexual assault, and attempting to forcibly convert both victims to Islam. The criminal acts took place within the jurisdiction of the Bilsi Police Station in Badaun district.
The events leading to the conviction began when Hussain, who presented himself to the local community as a faith healer, established contact with the victim and her family. He claimed he could provide a spiritual cure for her mentally disabled son. Gaining entry to the family’s residence on multiple occasions, he repeatedly assured the mother that he would fully heal her son's condition. Relying on these assurances, the family placed their complete trust in him. Taking advantage of this faith, Hussain lured the woman and her daughter away, confining them in a secluded, rented accommodation.
Hussain Repeatedly Raped the Hindu Woman and Forced Her to Convert
The initial abduction occurred while the woman and her daughter were traveling toward her paternal home. Hussain intercepted them on his motorcycle and persuaded them to accompany him. Instead of taking them to their destination, he brought the mother and child to Jidhpura, located in the neighboring Kasganj district, where he kept them locked inside a rented house for three full months.
During this 90-day period, the self-proclaimed healer subjected the mother and daughter to continuous abuse before law enforcement authorities were able to locate and rescue them. Hussain repeatedly and brutally raped the woman, routinely threatening to murder her young daughter if she did not comply with his demands. A formal medical examination conducted immediately after her rescue confirmed that the woman was six weeks and five days pregnant as a result of the ongoing assaults.
As testified by the woman and her daughter before the court, Hussain forcefully made them offer namaz and forced the daughter to refer to him as ‘Abba’ (father) and her mother as ‘Ammi’ (mother). He forced the woman to convert to Islam and perform Nikah with him. Hussain forcibly removed a tattoo on the woman’s hand with some toxic chemical, which has left her hand permanently scarred.
The Court Found Hussain Guilty of All Charges
Following a thorough evaluation of the testimony provided by both victims and supporting witnesses, along with medical reports and physical evidence submitted by the prosecution, the court declared Hussain guilty on all counts. Citing the severe nature of the crimes and the cruelty shown to the victims, the court ruled that a stringent penalty was necessary.
Hussain was convicted under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 137(2) for kidnapping from lawful guardianship, Section 87 for the abduction of a woman to compel marriage or illicit intercourse, Section 64(2) for repeated rape, Section 351(3) for criminal intimidation, and Section 127(4) for wrongful confinement lasting more than three days. Additionally, he was convicted under Sections 3/5(1) of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act for forced religious conversion.
For the primary charge of rape, the court handed down a sentence of 10 years of rigorous imprisonment, alongside a total cumulative fine of ₹1,50,000 across all counts. The court ordered that all prison sentences would run concurrently, with credit given for the time Hussain had already spent in custody during the investigation and trial phases.
A Chronological Timeline of the Investigation and Trial
- March 21, 2025: The woman and her 10-year-old daughter vanished while traveling to her paternal home after being picked up by Hussain on his motorcycle.
- March 27, 2025: Approximately one week after the disappearance, the woman’s husband, Prem Shankar, lodged a missing persons report at the Bilsi Police Station.
- May 27, 2025: Two months after the initial report, Prem Shankar filed a secondary complaint expressing explicit suspicion regarding Shakir Hussain’s involvement. Based on this, police registered an official First Information Report (FIR) under BNS Sections 137(2) and 87. At this stage, charges related to rape and unlawful conversion were not included because the victims had not yet been located.
- June 27, 2025: Law enforcement successfully located and rescued the mother and daughter from the rented property in Jidhpura. Following their recorded statements and medical evaluation, the police upgraded the FIR to include BNS Section 64(2) (repeated rape), Section 351(3) (criminal intimidation), Section 127(4) (wrongful confinement), and Sections 3/5(1) of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act.
- July 20, 2025 / Verdict: Following a trial lasting roughly six months, the Fast Track Court formally concluded the proceedings, declaring Hussain guilty on all counts and issuing his sentence.
