Rameshwaram Cafe Blast: Nationwide NIA Raids Lead to Arrests Over Suspected Terror Links

On Tuesday, 21st May, in response to the troubling Rameshwaram cafe blast that occurred on the 1st of March, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) initiated widespread raids at 11 different locations across India. The blast, which was caused by a low-intensity improvised explosive device (IED), tragically resulted in severe injuries to 10 individuals at a popular cafe in Bengaluru.

"Multi-state raids were underway in different locations," a senior NIA official disclosed, opting not to divulge more at this sensitive juncture. The NIA's determined efforts to unearth the network behind this terror act led them to multiple states where these critical operations were conducted.

Based on detailed information obtained from the interrogations of Mussavir Hussain Shazib and Abdul Matheen Taha, the alleged architects of the blast, the NIA pinpointed specific sites for their raids. These included Kumaraswamy Layout and Banshankari in Bengaluru, areas now closely associated with the ongoing investigation.

Further extending their reach, NIA officials also descended upon the residence of a retired headmaster named Abdul in Rayadurgam, a locality in Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur district. During this operation, they scrutinized the financial activities of Abdul and his son Sohail, a software engineer, focusing on certain dubious bank transactions. Following these inquiries, the authorities took Sohail into custody. He is currently under intensive interrogation by the NIA at Raydurga Police Station, as they piece together the connections linking him to the mastermind, Abdul Matheen Taha.

The investigation into the Rameshwaram cafe blast deepened with significant developments, as reported by South First. An official revealed to them that Sohail, recently detained for his suspected financial irregularities, had been on the NIA and other intelligence agencies' radar for his connections with Abdul Matheen, identified as the blast's orchestrator. "Sohail had been under the radar of the NIA and intelligence agencies for a while due to his suspected links with Abdul Matheen, the mastermind of the blast, as per NIA," the source confirmed.

The NIA formally assumed responsibility for the blast investigation on the 3rd of March, a few days after the tragic event. Progressing swiftly, on the 12th of April, the agency apprehended two primary suspects, including the said mastermind Abdul Matheen Ahmed Taahaa and the bomber, Mussavir Hussain Shazib. The arrest of these individuals occurred at a lodge near Kolkata, where they had been concealing their identities under false names. Shazib, in particular, was identified and accused of physically placing the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at the cafe, playing a direct role in the execution of the blast.

Further allegations surfaced linking both Abdul Matheen and Mussavir Hussain Shazib to a broader network of terror activities. Officials suggested that the two were part of a Shivamogga-based module affiliated with the Islamic State. This connection is particularly alarming as another member of this module, Shariq, was involved in a similar violent incident. "Shariq, a member of the same module, had carried out a blast in Mangaluru on 19th November 2022," officials disclosed, highlighting a pattern of orchestrated terror activities within this group.

Expanding Scope: NIA Raids Involve Coimbatore Medical Professionals

As part of the extensive investigation into the Rameshwaram cafe blast, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) extended its operations to Tamil Nadu, specifically targeting the residences of two doctors based in Coimbatore. The raids, which took place early in the morning, were conducted by two separate NIA teams at locations on Periya Subbanna Gounder Street and Narayana Guru Road within the Saibaba Colony.

Reports citing sources close to the investigation indicated that both doctors originally come from Karnataka. They have been part of the medical staff at a private hospital in Saibaba Colony, where they have been undergoing training for more than two years. As of now, the specifics of their involvement or the reasons behind the NIA's interest in these two individuals remain undisclosed, with further details expected to be released as the investigation progresses.

The agency's activities started promptly in the early hours and concluded by 8 AM, suggesting a well-coordinated effort to ensure minimal disruption and maximum efficiency in gathering necessary evidence.

The timeline of events leading to the extensive raids across India saw a critical incident on 23rd October 2022, when a car bomb exploded in front of the Arulmigu Kottai Sangameswarar Temple in Ukkadam, Coimbatore. This explosion, occurring on the eve of Diwali, a major Indian festival, significantly raised security concerns. At the scene, authorities discovered the charred remains of 29-year-old Jamesha Mubin, believed to be a suicide bomber. According to various reports, Mubin had allegedly planned to detonate the car bomb near a bustling market area on the same day, but the device exploded prematurely.

Since this attack, the scrutiny by central agencies over individuals and organizations in the Coimbatore area has intensified. This scrutiny is part of a broader effort to prevent similar incidents by identifying and neutralizing potential threats.

In a related development, Hyderabad-based journalist Sudhakar Udumula reported that during these comprehensive raids, the NIA’s Bengaluru branch made a significant arrest in Vikarabad district. "The man, in his fifties, is originally from Pune but currently resides in Nanded, Maharashtra, where he runs a fruit business," Udumula noted. This arrest points to the wide-reaching nature of the NIA’s investigation, extending beyond immediate suspects to individuals who might be linked to broader networks of concern.

In the ongoing investigations related to the Rameshwaram cafe blast and other associated events, recent raids have shed light on individuals suspected of deeper involvement in extremist activities. Sources have revealed further details about a trader apprehended in the NIA's extensive raids. According to Sudhakar Udumula, a journalist based in Hyderabad, "the trader was reportedly involved in previous cases and had been earlier convicted in a case in Karnataka," underscoring the individual's contentious past and ongoing concerns regarding his activities.

The focus of the investigation has also been on uncovering the networks supporting these activities, particularly the elusive online figure known as "Colonel." Authorities believe that this individual has been instrumental in coordinating actions of the accused, including Taha, the alleged mastermind, and Shazib, the alleged bomber. Their connection dates back to their involvement with the ISIS Al-Hind module during 2019-20, highlighting a sustained period of radical activity.

Further details from an NIA charge sheet reveal that Taha and Shazib were part of a larger, 20-member Al-Hind module. This group had ambitious and dangerous plans to establish an ISIS province in the jungles of South India, reflecting a severe threat of regional destabilization.
