Tarana Unrest: Curfew Imposed After Mob Attacks Homes and Vehicles Following Friday Prayers in Ujjain DistrictBy Editor-in-Chief | Location: Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh

In the quiet town of Tarana, located in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain district, a disturbing wave of communal violence has shattered the peace, forcing authorities to impose strict curfew measures.

The unrest, which began as a localized dispute, rapidly spiraled into a major law and order situation on January 22, 2026. The initial spark was a targeted assault by a group of Muslim youths on Sohail Thakur Bundela, the local head of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s (VHP) Gau Seva Prakoshtha (Cow Protection Cell). What started as an isolated altercation soon escalated into a full-blown riot, with a Muslim mob engaging in widespread arson, stone-pelting, and vandalism that left the town on edge.

The situation took a turn for the worse the following day, intensifying significantly after the Friday Jummah Namaz. During this second wave of violence, rioters wreaked havoc on public and private property, torching over 11 buses, vandalizing shops, and leaving several individuals injured. In response, the police administration has clamped down on the area, imposing prohibitory orders under Section 144 (now Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita) to curb the violence. While a heavy deployment of police personnel now patrols the streets and multiple arrests have been made, the atmosphere in Tarana remains thick with tension.

The Spark: Attack on VHP Leader Sohail Thakur

The sequence of events that led to this unrest began on the night of Thursday, January 22. Tensions first flared when VHP leader Sohail Thakur Bundela was brutally assaulted by a group of Muslim youths, a gang that reportedly included an individual named Ishaan Mirza.

According to local accounts, the conflict originated from a trivial verbal argument. Bundela was standing in Shukla Gali (also known as Shukla Mohalla), directly opposite the Bade Ram Mandir, when the youths confronted him. The dispute reportedly started over Bundela simply standing in that spot and "staring." This verbal confrontation quickly turned violent, leading to a physical fight where Bundela was assaulted and sustained multiple injuries. His associate, Rajat Thakur, who was present at the scene, was also injured in the scuffle. Both men were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment; medical reports confirm their condition is stable.

While the immediate cause seemed trivial, underlying tensions may have played a role. Some media reports cite unconfirmed sources to say that the Muslim attackers threatened the VHP activists not to work for cow protection.

News of the assault spread rapidly. In no time, a Muslim mob and supporters of the VHP activist took to the streets, transforming the town into a conflict zone. A hostile mob began pelting stones at members of the Hindu community and went on a rampage, damaging over two dozen vehicles. This included 11 buses that were parked near the local bus stand, which bore the brunt of the initial vandalism.

Police acted swiftly to identify the culprits. They have registered a case of attempted murder against six individuals: Sappan Mirza, Ishaan Mirza, Shadab (alias Idli), Salman Mirza, Rizwan Mirza, and Naved. While five of the accused have been apprehended, one remains on the run.

High-ranking VHP leader Vishnu Patidar has expressed deep concern over the investigation, alleging that the absconding Muslim youth is the main accused, who allegedly inflicted the head injury.

Escalation: Protests and Friday Violence

The morning of Friday, January 23, saw further escalation. Activists from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal gathered in large numbers to stage a protest outside the Tarana Police Station. Raising slogans, they demanded immediate justice, calling for the arrest of all accused and the demolition of their illegal properties.

Police officials on the ground attempted to pacify the crowd and persuade them to disperse. However, the activists refused, eventually settling into a sit-in protest directly in front of the station, where they began reciting the Hanuman Chalisa as a mark of their defiance and unity.

While the police managed to keep a lid on tensions during the day, unrest returned in Tarana after Friday (Jummah) Namaz at the Takiya Mosque in Khedi Mohalla. Following the prayers, a large crowd of masked protesters poured into the streets. The violence that followed was targeted and destructive. Muslim rioters allegedly set one or two buses on fire, adding to the toll of damaged two-wheelers and cars. The mob resumed stone-pelting, specifically targeting four to six houses in the vicinity. Emergency services were stretched thin, as reports say that the fire department was rushed in to control the blazes.

The arsonists did not stop at vehicles. Rioters set fire to the land located at Khankhaniya Bheru Maharaj, behind the agricultural market in Tarana. A fire brigade was dispatched immediately upon receiving the information and managed to bring the flames under control before they could spread further.

Violence continued late into the night. Stone-pelting broke out at Imli Bada at 9 pm on Friday. Police teams were immediately dispatched to the spot, and they had to use mild force to disperse the aggressive mob and restore order.

Targeted Attacks and Temple Vandalism

This second wave of Islamist violence resulted in significant property damage, with over 15 vehicles destroyed or damaged. Disturbing visuals have surfaced online, showing flames engulfing buses and crowds scattering as police sirens wail in the background.

Eyewitness accounts paint a harrowing picture of the chaos. Reports say that Muslim rioters armed with swords, rods, and lathis barged into Hindu localities to pelt stones and attack their houses in a targeted manner. Residents reported that window panes were shattered by the relentless stone-pelting.

More alarmingly, there are allegations of religious desecration. It is even being alleged that the rioters who wreaked havoc after Jummah Namaz also attacked a Hindu temple, although, fortunately, no major damage was reported to the structure itself. The atmosphere was further vitiated by verbal abuse; women in the affected areas alleged that, in addition to trying to enter homes, the Muslim rioters were hurling abuses.

Local residents are living in fear. Speaking to TimesNow Navbharat, a local resident claimed that stone pelting was also being done from a local mosque, and that glass bottles were hurled at Hindu houses by Muslim rioters.

Administrative Response and Current Status

The police crackdown has been extensive. So far, over 15 arrests have been made in connection with the riots. To maintain order, Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS)—which is equivalent to the erstwhile Section 144 of the CrPC—remains strictly imposed across Tarana.

Addressing the media on the law enforcement response, IG (Law and Order) at the Madhya Pradesh Police headquarters, Anshuman Singh, stated that five men have been arrested specifically for the Thursday violence, while 15 to 20 others have been detained for their alleged role in the violence on Thursday and Friday.

The district administration is leaving nothing to chance. Additional police forces were called in from 5-10 police stations in the district on Friday to bolster the local presence. Drone surveillance is currently underway to monitor rooftops and narrow alleys, and a flag march has been conducted to instill confidence among the residents. The police have also confirmed that CCTV footage and social media videos are being examined to identify other rioters who may have escaped the initial dragnet.

Ujjain district Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma provided an update on the investigation, stating, “We have already detained 15-20 men found involved in the violence. CCTV footage and video clips are being scanned to identify more rioters who engaged in violence.”

The police have issued a stern appeal to the local population to refrain from peddling and falling for rumours, warning that strict action will be taken against anyone attempting to disrupt law and order. A heavy police force remains deployed in the unrest-hit Tarana to prevent any further flare-ups.

At the state level, the government has taken serious cognizance of the riots. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has assured that stringent action will be taken against those behind disrupting law and order.
