We saw how much power can be achieved in just five words when Swami Vivekananda stood up to respond to the warm reception he received at the first World’s Parliament of Religions held in Chicago on the 11th of September 1893. He started his speech with these words – “Sisters and Brothers of America” addressing about seven thousand people who had assembled from around the globe under one roof. His speech was followed by applause which lasted for more than three minutes.

An online petition addressed to United Nations (UN) asking it to “free Goa from illegal occupation by India” has been deleted or taken down after vociferous protests. The petition titled ‘Free Goa from Indian invasion & its continued illegal occupation against UN resolution’ had been started by one Atanasia Lobo who calls himself ‘indigenous people of Goa living in exile in foreign countries'. The petition addressed the UN Secretary-General and 42 other world leaders and was signed by 4179 people.

On Saturday, January 8, a case of rape of a minor Madarsa student has come to the fore from the Sitamarhi district in the Mithila region of Bihar. A report by TV9 Hindi suggests that the cleric Maulvi Tabrez raped and impregnated the minor girl, who came to study at his Madarsa. He also recorded the act and started blackmailing her with the video. The cleric reportedly used the video to further rape her on several occasions until she became pregnant.

The Chinese authorities in the Sichuan province destroyed a 99 foot tall Buddha statue and 45 prayer wheels in the Draggo county, Kham, Tibet. They also forced the monks from the Gaden Namgyal Ling monastery and the local Tibetans to witness the demolition of the sacred statue, which began on December 12 and continued for the next nine days.
