The killings were rooted in baseless allegations of witchcraft. The Division Bench comprising Justices Sangam Kumar Sahoo and Radha Krishna Pattanaik commuted the sentence to imprisonment for life, emphasizing the possibility of reformation for the convicts. The court stated that imprisonment until the end of natural life was an appropriate punishment, acknowledging the potential for the convicts’ rehabilitation.
