"सब एक खुदा, एक रसूल, एक ही उम्माह की शान हैं": Ayatollah Arafi takes power as Iran’s interim leader after Ali Khamenei dies in a massive US-Israeli strike on Tehran, sparking global chaos from Karachi protests to tragic school hits in Minab city

Ayatollah Arafi Named Interim Supreme Leader Following Death of Ali Khamenei

In a move that signals a significant shift in the Iranian power structure, the senior cleric Ayatollah Arafi has been appointed as the interim Supreme Leader of Iran. This transition follows the death of Ali Khamenei, an event that has sent shockwaves through the region and the international community.

Born in 1959 into a prominent clerical family in Meybod, located in the Yazd province, Arafi comes from a long lineage of religious figures. According to various Iranian historical accounts, his family traces its roots back to Zoroastrians who converted to Islam during the 19th century. His father, Ayatollah (Sheikh Haji) Mohammad Ibrahim Arafi, was a well-known figure in state media and was documented as a close associate of Ruhollah Khomeini, the founding father of the Islamic Republic following the 1979 revolution. As the first generation of revolutionary leaders begins to pass away, men like Arafi are increasingly seen as the new face of Iranian authority. He possesses the specific religious credentials and high-level political connections required to compete for power in Iran’s rapidly changing political landscape.

Regional Turmoil: Iranian Missiles Reach Cyprus

The chaos following the leadership change has already spilled over Iran’s borders. Reports indicate that Iranian missiles were fired toward British military bases located in Cyprus. However, UK officials have attempted to de-escalate the immediate alarm regarding a direct hit on British assets.

The Independent quoted UK Defence Secretary John Healey, who stated: “We are pretty sure they weren’t targeted at our bases.” Despite this, Healey noted the danger of the current climate, adding that “it shows how indiscriminate” the Iranian retaliation has become. These comments were made during a morning broadcast circuit, just one day after Prime Minister Keir Starmer revealed that the United Kingdom had deployed aircraft over the Middle East for defensive purposes. Healey reinforced the Prime Minister’s plea for Iran to cease its missile strikes and to step back from what he called escalating and indiscriminate attacks across the Middle East. He further urged the Iranian leadership to completely abandon its weapons programs.

Vows Massive Strike Against Tehran

As tensions reach a breaking point, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has issued a stern warning to the Iranian government and a direct appeal to its citizens. He signaled that a massive military campaign is imminent.

"In the coming days, we shall strike thousands of targets belonging to the terrorist regime. We shall prepare the conditions for the brave people of Iran to free themselves from the chains of tyranny. And for this reason, I say to you once again: O citizens of Iran, do not let this opportunity slip away. This is an opportunity that comes but once in every generation. Do not sit idly by, for your moment will arrive soon," Netanyahu declared.

The Prime Minister’s rhetoric was clearly designed to incite internal domestic pressure against the Iranian state. He continued: "The moment when you must take to the streets, when you must come to the streets in your millions to finish the job, to overthrow the regime of terror that has embittered your lives. Your suffering and sacrifice shall not be in vain. The help you have longed for—this help has now arrived. Help has arrived, and now the time has come to unite for a historic mission. O citizens of Iran, Persians, Kurds, Azeris, Ahwazis, and Baloch— Now is the time to unite your forces to topple the regime and secure your future."

Global Travel Disruption: Delhi Airport Hit by Cancellations

The conflict is having a tangible impact on global logistics and civilian travel. At Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, at least 100 flights have been cancelled due to sudden airspace restrictions over Iran and various parts of the Middle East.

According to reports from ANI citing official sources, the cancellations include 60 departures and 40 arrivals. These restrictions are a direct result of the heightened military activity in the region, making commercial flight paths through Iranian and Middle Eastern corridors unsafe for travel.

Iran’s Presidency Labels Killing a ‘Declaration of War’

The official response from the Iranian government has been one of outrage and mourning. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has characterized the death of the Supreme Leader as a direct assault on the Islamic world.

As reported by AFP, President Pezeshkian stated: "The assassination of the highest political authority of the Islamic Republic of Iran and a prominent leader of Shiism worldwide... is perceived as an open declaration of war against Muslims, and particularly against Shiites, everywhere in the world."

Ali Khamenei was reportedly killed during a massive military assault on Iran conducted by the joint forces of Israel and the United States. This event has cast a dark cloud of uncertainty over the future of the Islamic Republic. State television and the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) confirmed the 86-year-old leader’s death early Sunday morning. This confirmation came only hours after US President Donald Trump went public with the news, calling it the “greatest chance” for the Iranian people to take back control of their nation.

These developments followed a series of coordinated airstrikes by the US and Israel on Iranian government and military installations. President Trump has stated that this “intense and precise bombing campaign” will remain active throughout the week or for as long as the military deems it necessary to achieve its objectives.

Violence Errupts Near US Consulate in Karachi

The anger over the strikes has spread to Pakistan, where violent clashes have broken out. At least nine people were killed on Sunday during confrontations between protesters and law enforcement near the United States Consulate in Karachi.

The Dawn News reported these figures after speaking with the executive director of the trauma center at Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK). Dr. Mohammad Sabir Memon told the outlet that in addition to the nine fatalities, 32 other individuals were injured during the protests. Reports from Edhi indicated that law enforcement used baton charges and tear gas to try and manage the surging crowds.

Dr. Summaiya Syed, a police surgeon, confirmed to Dawn that two of the injured brought to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) were police officers who had been struck by "hard and blunt instruments." She also noted that "two protesters with firearm injuries" were being treated at the same facility. In response to the escalating violence, Sindh’s Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar has demanded immediate updates from Karachi’s Additional Inspector General of Police, Azad Khan, and has ordered that alternative traffic routes be established while security forces remain on high alert.

IDF Confirms Large-Scale Operation in Tehran

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have officially taken responsibility for the strike that killed Ali Khamenei. The military confirmed that the Supreme Leader died in an airstrike in Tehran yesterday, describing the hit as part of a “precise, large-scale” operation.

According to the IDF, the mission was guided by highly accurate intelligence and targeted Khamenei while he was inside his central leadership compound alongside other high-ranking officials. The IDF’s statement painted a picture of Khamenei as a leader who, since 1989, was “directly responsible for the violent repression of Iranian citizens over many years.”

The statement continued: “Khamenei was the architect of plans to destroy the State of Israel and was known as the ‘head of the Iranian octopus,’ with influence stretching across the Middle East, including Hezbollah. He was responsible for terrorist attacks against Israel, and the blood of many civilians worldwide was on his hands.” The military concluded by saying his death “brings an end to a decades-long chapter with the elimination of the leader of the Iranian terror axis.”

Strikes Reach the Heart of the Iranian Capital

For the first time since the current conflict began, Israel has struck what it calls “the heart of Tehran.” In a statement released via Telegram, the Israeli military confirmed that they are now targeting government sites within the capital.

Previous military actions had focused on neutralizing Iran’s air defenses to establish aerial superiority, effectively clearing the path for these direct strikes on the capital city. Witnesses in the area have reported seeing massive plumes of smoke rising from various government districts in Tehran as the bombardment continues.

Tragedy in Minab: 1,200 Munitions Dropped

The scale of the aerial campaign is staggering. The Israeli Air Force has reported dropping more than 1,200 munitions on Iranian territory over the last 24 hours in a joint effort with the United States.

Tragically, one of the locations hit was an elementary girls' school in the city of Minab, located in Iran's southern Hormozgan province. Reports indicate that at least 148 people were killed in the blast, with dozens of others suffering injuries. Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, issued a heated condemnation of the incident, stating that “dozens of innocent children” were among the victims. He warned the international community that this specific act “will not go unanswered.”
