A 600-strong Muslim mob attacked 15 Hindu homes in Rangpur, Bangladesh over a fake blasphemy post by a cloned account, forcing 50 terrified families to flee as police watched and later fled, with no arrests made and an 18-year-old Hindu boy wrongly jailed

On Sunday, 27th July, a violent and organised mob of 500-600 Muslims launched a brutal assault on over 15 homes belonging to Hindus in Betgari Union of Gangachara upazila, Rangpur district, Bangladesh, under the allegation of ‘blasphemy’. This was not a spontaneous act of outrage but a calculated and selective attack, aimed at terrifying and uprooting the minority Hindu community in the area.

According to detailed local reports, the attack began around 4:30 pm on Sunday, when a large mob, armed with sticks and country-made weapons, arrived and began looting and vandalising Hindu homes. The violence did not occur in isolation. In fact, the rampage was a continuation of the Saturday attack (26th July), when Muslim attackers first targeted the house of a Hindu man using sticks and weapons. The coordinated assaults extended into Sunday evening (28th July), intensifying the fear and trauma of the local community.
In the aftermath, at least 50 Hindu families fled the village, fearing for their lives and security. Their fear was not unfounded. A Hindu woman tearfully said, “How will we survive now? We have been rendered penniless. They (Muslims) have taken away everything.” Her voice echoed the pain of a community that suddenly found itself homeless and helpless.
The horror unfolded in front of law enforcement. A young Hindu girl told Ajker Patrika that the police were present when the attackers came. She explained that while the police initially tried to resist the mob, they eventually fled the scene, abandoning the vulnerable residents to their fate. “Why were the homes of innocent people like us vandalised and looted?” the girl asked — a question that still remains unanswered.

Even the Gangachara Police Officer-in-Charge, Al Emran, admitted his failure in containing the situation. He stated that he had allowed the mob of 500-600 Muslims to gather, assuming it was a ‘peaceful march.’ But as he explained, “However, they suddenly launched an attack. One cop was seriously injured.” He further revealed that the assault occurred right after the afternoon Namaz.
Local Hindu resident Pramod Mahant, speaking to Prothom Alo, described how the mob was initially meant to hold a protest in the local market, but things quickly turned sinister when they started shouting slogans and heading towards Hindu homes.
Eventually, it was the combined efforts of the police and army that brought the situation under control — but not before the attackers fled the crime scene without being identified or arrested. Shockingly, no arrests have been made so far, despite the widespread damage and terror unleashed on the community.
This wasn’t the first time such targeted communal violence has erupted. A similar incident occurred in May this year in Jessore district, where Muslim mobs used the same pretext to punish the Hindu community through arson and looting, following an alleged act of ‘blasphemy’.

Heading: The Fabricated Trigger — An 18-Year-Old Hindu Boy Accused Without Evidence
The chain of events that culminated in the mass violence began on Saturday, 26th July, when Ronjon Roy, an 18-year-old Hindu boy from Gangachara, was arrested over unconfirmed allegations of ‘blasphemy’.
According to available reports, the teenager was accused of insulting Islam and Prophet Muhammad by allegedly making derogatory Facebook posts from an account named ‘Ronjon Roy Lrm’. The posts in question were claimed to have been uploaded over a span of 5 days.
However, journalist and fact-checker Sohan RSB brought to light a different side of the story. He pointed out that a duplicate Facebook account had been created in Ronjon's name. The offensive posts were actually made from this new, fake account, which also shared pictures from Ronjon’s original profile with derogatory captions aimed at his family.
|
Despite these red flags, no investigation or verification was conducted. Fueled by rage and mob mentality, hundreds of Muslims took to the streets, demanding swift action. The local police succumbed to their pressure and arrested the Hindu boy, failing to even verify whether Ronjon had access to the alleged fake Facebook account.
In an official statement, Officer-in-Charge Al Emran confirmed, “When the locals got angry, we quickly conducted a raid to arrest him and bring the law and order situation under control. He is being interrogated.”
This arrest became the trigger for communal violence, used as a justification to attack innocent Hindu families. In reality, the boy’s arrest only opened the floodgates for widespread vandalism, causing families to lose homes, property, and livelihood — all over an accusation that had not even been proven.
