400-year-old tradition of making Kondapalli toys in Andhra gets a boost

In the serene landscapes of Andhra Pradesh blooms a legacy steeped in vibrant hues and splendid craftsmanship – the 400-year-old tradition of creating the exquisite Kondapalli toys, an art that has been given a much-needed resurgence in recent times.

Imagine stepping into a realm where toys come alive, breathing stories of mythology, offering glimpses of rustic life, and mirroring the innocence in the faces of animals. These are the famed Kondapalli toys, revered for their lightweight structure, vivacious colours and intricate production techniques that have transcended through time. When you hold a Kondapalli toy, you aren't just holding a piece of art; you are holding centuries of heritage woven through joyous and realistic expressions. The sublime artistry embedded in these toys reflects a rich blend of traditional nuances coupled with the 17th-century Rajasthani finesse, particularly evident in the human figures with pointed noses that hark back to an era of royal elegance.

Behind the creation of these masterpieces is a community of illustrious artisans, the ‘Aryakshatriyas’. Their journey narrates a grand tale of migration from the sandy landscapes of Rajasthan to the artistic heart of Kondapalli in the 16th century. They carried with them not just their belongings but a cherished art that has blossomed in Kondapalli, flourishing through generations. The 'Toy Colony' of Kondapalli vibrates with creativity, where every member, young and old, passionately indulges in toy-making, nurturing an age-old tradition that reverberates with familial warmth and ancestral pride.

The legend surrounding these craftsmen, also known as chitrakaras, adds a mystical touch to their artistry. Rooted deeply in their ancestry, they firmly believe in the blessings bestowed upon their forefather, Muktharishi, by Lord Shiva himself, gifting him an unparalleled skill in arts and crafts. These very hands, they claim, sculpted the magnificent Garuda, Nandi, Simha, and the awe-inspiring Vahanas that grace numerous temples in Andhra Pradesh, showcasing a rich narrative that intertwines spirituality and craftsmanship.

Yet, as we stand in the modern era, the Kondapalli toys have gracefully transitioned from mere playthings to cherished collectables, coveted by enthusiasts worldwide. This shift has woven a new narrative for these toys, turning them into symbols of luxury and culture, seen less in the hands of children and more as prized possessions in the dwellings of collectors. This evolution, however, nibbled away at their repurchase market, since the longevity of these collectables diminished the need for replacements.

A nostalgic reminiscence takes us to the lively celebrations of Dusshera and Sankranthi, where the 'Bommala Koluvu' or 'Kollu' turned into a grand exhibition of these toys. Homes transformed into vibrant galleries where children and women proudly displayed their collections, competing to boast the grandest and most elaborate assortment. These festivals once showered prosperity upon the Kondapalli artisans, turning into prime seasons of flourishing business. Yet, the winds of change have swept away much of these traditions, forcing the artisans to adapt to modern demands, replacing the natural dyes that once adorned their toys with cost-effective enamel colours.

In recent times, a dramatic shift is unfolding in the alleys of Kondapalli, a change that promises to rekindle the flame of a craft that was inching towards oblivion due to the surge of mechanized toys. For years, the master craftsmen faced neglect, their interests and development pushed to the periphery as the market embraced the mechanization of toy manufacturing. Yet, the tide has begun to turn, ushering in an era of rejuvenation and growth for the community of Kondapalli artisans, all thanks to the concerted efforts by the government and several organisations and institutions rallying to nurture and develop this distinctive industry.

Standing at the forefront of this renaissance is the Central Government, stepping in with unwavering resolve to preserve and amplify the resonance of traditional skills and artistry that breathe life into these illustrious toys. Through the laudable initiative under the Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries, a comprehensive blueprint has been sketched to fuel the manufacturing endeavours of Kondapalli toys in Andhra Pradesh. This initiative stands as a beacon of hope, not only infusing fresh life into the craft but orchestrating a synergy amongst diverse artisan societies. It envisages a consolidated platform, fostering an ecosystem where training, raw material management, production, and sales harmoniously blend, paving a golden path towards resurgence and prosperity.

In line with this vision, a significant restructuring has been undertaken, consolidating 27 societies that encompass 206 dedicated artisans of Kondapalli, aligning them under a modernised training regimen equipped with state-of-the-art marketing methodologies. Playing pivotal roles in this revival saga are the National Institute of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and the District Rural Development Agency, who have taken the reins as the nodal and implementing agencies for this noble scheme.

At the heart of this vibrant resurgence stands the newly formed society named 'Kondapalli Sfurthi Bommala Panivarla Sangam'. This entity has been vested with the monumental task of spearheading the operations and implementing myriad activities that form the linchpin of this rejuvenation initiative. Replacing the old with the new, a sprawling structure now graces Kondapalli, housing 16 state-of-the-art workshops that promise to be the crucible where creations of unmatched beauty and finesse will take form. As many as 80 families stand to reap the benefits of this establishment, bringing renewed hope and vigour into their lives.

Furthermore, this establishment heralds an era where artisans can immerse themselves in their craft without constraints, as it offers a spacious workshop dedicated exclusively to the carving and designing of the toys, coupled with all essential amenities to facilitate seamless work. Thus, as Kondapalli stands on the cusp of a golden dawn, the artisans find themselves armed with renewed energy and resources, ready to carve a future that resonates with glory, pride, and an undying legacy of craftsmanship.

In a valiant effort to catapult the Kondapalli toy industry onto the global stage, prominent organizations like the Tata Trust are being enlisted to foster international marketing opportunities. A significant emphasis is being placed on streamlining the production process, with efforts underway to curtail escalating costs. Recognizing the burgeoning expenses linked to the acquisition of white pine trees, a crucial raw material that has become scarcely available in Kondapalli, the society is gearing up to provide a substantial subsidy, accounting for a whopping 50 percent of the increased costs, thus mitigating the financial strain on the artisans.

In an uplifting interaction with the media, the dynamic Kesineni Srinivas, the esteemed Member of Parliament from Vijayawada, expressed unflinching commitment to the cause. He delineated the robust financial layout earmarked for the project, highlighting a substantial budget of Rs. 172.50 lakhs, a lion's share of which, a staggering 90 percent, will be generously funded by the Central Government. Furthermore, an allocation of Rs. 29.50 lakhs from his MPLADS fund is set to bolster the financial reservoir for this ambitious scheme, promising to elevate the craft to unprecedented heights.

Amidst this fervor of revival and resurgence, it is imperative to delve deep into the essence that makes Kondapalli toys a marvel of craftsmanship. Nestled in the heart of Andhra's Krishna district, the Kondapalli region has cradled this magnificent art form for over four centuries. The custodians of this precious craft, the Aryakhastriyas, find a revered mention in the hallowed verses of the Brahmanda Purana. Tracing their lineage to the revered Muktharishi, a sage who was bestowed with unparalleled skills in arts and crafts by Lord Shiva himself, these artisans embody a rich legacy that resonates with spiritual fervor and unparalleled skill.

In a celebration of culture and heritage, the toys come alive through intricate craftsmanship, fashioned from the soft tendrils of Tella Poniki, a variety of softwood. Each fragment of these splendid creations is carved with precision, coming together in a harmonious assembly, united with a unique adhesive concoction of tamarind seed powder and sawdust. As they take form, meticulous attention is devoted to imparting an exquisite finish, with the vibrant hues of oil and water colours, or the vivid impressions rendered through vegetable dyes and enamel paints.

These toys are a vivid tableau of India's rich cultural tapestry, encapsulating mythological narratives, vibrant depictions of birds, majestic animals, rustic bullock carts, and glimpses of bucolic life. Amongst the diverse collection, the Dasavatharam dolls and dancing dolls stand as the pièce de résistance, captivating audiences with their vibrant semblance and detailed craftsmanship.

As we stand at the juncture of a promising future, it is heartening to witness the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, weaving a vibrant tapestry that promises to elevate the Kondapalli toy craft to a pedestal of global recognition, imbuing it with pride, nationalism, and a fervent sense of emotional resonance that transcends generations. Let us unite in cherishing this magnificent resurgence, a testimony to India's rich and diverse cultural heritage, beaming with a renewed lustre, promising a future graced with prosperity and global acclaim.
