The Ministry of Railways has urgently and seriously recommended a CBI probe into the devastating three-train crash in Balasore, Odisha

The Ministry of Railways has urgently and seriously recommended a CBI probe into the devastating three-train crash in Balasore, Odisha, which tragically took the lives of 275 individuals and left 1000 others injured.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made this crucial announcement, acknowledging the gravity of the situation.

"Considering all aspects and taking into account the available administrative information, the Railway Board has deemed it necessary to recommend a thorough investigation by the CBI," he emphasized during a press briefing in Balasore.

The Indian Railways has categorically dismissed any possibility of an error on the part of the loco pilot system, pointing instead to a potential case of sabotage and tampering with the electronic interlocking system as the cause behind the triple train accident.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, addressing the issue on Sunday, attributed the catastrophic train disaster in Balasore, Odisha, to a "change in electronic interlocking."

The electronic interlocking system, a critical set of signal equipment, ensures the safe movement of trains along a network of lines by preventing conflicting signals. Its primary function is to ensure that a train cannot proceed until the route's safety has been established.

Officials in Delhi, elaborating on the possible cause of the accident, explained that while the system is designed to be "error-proof" and "fail-safe," they did not dismiss the possibility of external interference.

"The system is called fail-safe, meaning that even in the event of failure, all signals turn red, and train operations come to a halt. As the minister mentioned, there was a problem with the signaling system. It's possible that someone may have unknowingly damaged the cables while digging. Any machinery is susceptible to failures," stated Jaya Verma Sinha, Member of Operation and Business Development, Railway Board.

The statements emphasize the seriousness of the situation, raising concerns about potential sabotage and the need for a thorough investigation into the incident.

Odisha Train Accident: Balasore tragedy death toll revised to 275

According to Odisha Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena, the death toll in the tragic train accident in Balasore has been revised to 275 after rectifying certain instances of double counting. The announcement was made on Sunday.

Out of the revised death toll of 275, Chief Secretary Jena stated that 88 bodies have been successfully identified.

Initially, the Railways had reported the number of deaths as 288, and this information was also circulated. However, upon thorough examination conducted by the District Magistrate and their team, each body recovered from the accident site, railway tracks, hospital, and temporary assembly points was carefully checked. It was discovered that some bodies had been counted twice, leading to the correction in the final death toll. The Collector confirmed that the accurate number of deaths is 275 and not 288, as previously reported.

This update highlights the efforts made to ensure accuracy in accounting for the tragic loss of lives in the Balasore train accident, taking into account any potential duplications in the initial count.

Amidst profound grief, Odisha Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena shared administrative information regarding the tragic train accident in Balasore. He revealed that out of the revised death toll of 275, 88 bodies have been identified, and by Sunday morning, 78 of them had been handed over to their families. The process of handing over the remaining 10 identified bodies was underway.

Chief Secretary Jena informed that several hospitals, including AMRI Hospital, AIIMS, Capital Hospital, and SUM, had received a total of 170 bodies of the deceased. Plans were in place to bring the remaining bodies to Bhubaneshwar, the capital city of Odisha, for further arrangements and procedures.

Furthermore, the Chief Secretary provided an update on the injured passengers. A total of 1,175 injured individuals were initially sent to various hospitals for medical treatment. As of Sunday morning, 793 of the injured passengers had been discharged from the hospitals after receiving the necessary medical care.

These sorrowful details reflect the heart-wrenching reality of the incident, along with the efforts being made to identify and release the bodies of the deceased, as well as provide medical assistance to the injured survivors.

Chief Secretary Jena further provided an update on the injured passengers, stating that 382 individuals were still receiving treatment as of the morning. This figure is expected to be updated as the situation develops.

In an effort to aid in the identification process, Chief Secretary Jena mentioned that photographs of the unidentified bodies had been uploaded to the websites of three organizations: the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), Odisha State Disaster Management Authority, and Bhubaneshwar Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Railways reported that restoration work at the accident site was progressing rapidly. The officials were closely monitoring the restoration process, which involved the dedicated efforts of over a thousand individuals. The ministry confirmed the deployment of more than seven Poclain Machines, two accident relief trains, and three to four railway and road cranes.

At the Bahanaga Bazar Station in the Balasore district, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Coromandel Express, and a cargo train were on separate tracks when the tragic three-way collision occurred.

The rescue operations saw the participation of 24 Fire Services and Emergency units, five ODRAF Units, and seven National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Teams. In collaboration with the government and Indian Railways, the Indian Air Force (IAF) deployed Mi-17 helicopters to transport the injured and deceased. The Eastern Command of the IAF coordinated these rescue efforts.

According to the preliminary report, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Coromandel Express, and a cargo train were involved in the three-way collision, leading to severe damage to up to 17 coaches from the passenger trains.

These detailed updates shed light on the ongoing rescue and restoration efforts, emphasizing the collaborative work of multiple agencies and the scale of the operation in response to the devastating train accident in Balasore.
