Nikki Bhati of Greater Noida set on fire by her husband Vipin and in-laws over a ₹36 lakh dowry demand as her son and sister saw the horror unfold while protests rose, her father demanded bulldozer justice and Vipin was later shot in a police encounter

In December 2016, a young woman named Nikki entered into marriage with Vipin Bhati in Greater Noida’s Sirsa village. On the very same day, Nikki’s elder sister Kanchan married Vipin’s brother, Rohit. The two sisters became brides in the same household, a union that their family believed would be a happy beginning. To honor the marriage, Nikki’s family provided a lavish dowry. The gifts included a Mahindra Scorpio SUV, a Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle, a large amount of cash, gold jewelry, and several other valuables.

Despite these expensive gifts, the family of the groom was still not satisfied. Soon after the wedding, they allegedly started pressuring Nikki’s family for an additional ₹36 lakh (3.6 million rupees). This demand placed an unbearable burden on her parents, who had already given more than they could afford.
According to Kanchan, the nightmare began just six months after the wedding. She revealed that both sisters were harassed and tortured by their in-laws over continued dowry demands. The abuse was not limited to words. She recalled that her husband Rohit and Nikki’s husband Vipin would frequently stay out late at night and ignore their calls. Whenever they asked about their whereabouts, they faced violence. Kanchan shared her ordeal with reporters and said, “They would spend time with other women, and when we confronted them, they would hit us. Our nights were spent crying.”
Desperate for some financial independence, the two sisters tried to open a small make-up studio business. But their hopes were crushed when their in-laws took control of their earnings. Whenever they resisted or asked to keep their own income, they were beaten once again. Over time, Nikki’s family kept giving in to the mounting pressure. Kanchan revealed that another car was also given later, but the greed of the in-laws never ended.
The situation became even more disturbing when Nikki’s father, Bhikari Singh, purchased a new Mercedes car for himself. According to the police investigation, Vipin’s eyes fell on this luxury car, and he demanded that it should be given to him as well. This showed how far the greed had grown, turning into an endless cycle of demands that no gift could satisfy.
The disputes became so severe that they had to be brought before the local panchayat (village council). Community elders intervened multiple times, hoping to resolve the matter. But despite these efforts, nothing changed. The harassment continued, and the abusive behavior inside the Bhati household only grew worse with each passing year.
The Deadly Incident – August 21, 2025
After nearly nine years of marriage filled with torment, the tragedy reached its most horrific point on the night of August 21, 2025. On that Thursday evening, a violent altercation broke out inside the Bhati home.
According to the FIR (police complaint) filed by Kanchan, her brother-in-law Vipin and his mother, Daya, brutally attacked Nikki. Kanchan tried to step in to protect her younger sister, but she too was beaten and threatened. The in-laws reportedly told her, “We got dowry for one sister, what about the other? ...You are better off dead.”
The assault on Nikki then took a horrifying turn. As alleged in the complaint, Vipin poured a flammable liquid over Nikki’s body and set her ablaze using a lighter.
This gruesome act did not happen in secrecy. It unfolded before the eyes of Nikki’s six-year-old son. The child later gave a heartbreaking statement, recalling, “they first put something on Mumma. Then they slapped her before setting her on fire with a lighter.” When asked if it was his father who killed his mother, the boy nodded in confirmation.
In the midst of this horror, Kanchan managed to gather courage and use her phone to record video evidence. One clip showed Vipin and his mother Daya dragging Nikki by her hair and beating her inside the house. Another captured the devastating aftermath – Nikki, her body in flames, stumbling down a staircase while ablaze.
Kanchan, along with neighbors, tried frantically to save her sister. She poured water over Nikki in an attempt to put out the fire. In the process, Kanchan herself fainted from shock. Neighbors then stepped in, helping to rush a critically burned Nikki to Fortis Hospital in Greater Noida.
Doctors at Fortis discovered that Nikki had suffered severe burns covering most of her body. Given the seriousness of her condition, they referred her to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, known for its burn unit. But Nikki never made it there alive. She succumbed to her injuries while being transported, her body unable to withstand the immense damage.
Police Response and Initial Investigation
The report of a young woman brought in with severe and suspicious burns immediately raised alarms. Fortis Hospital informed the Greater Noida police, prompting them to act without delay. By the time Nikki had passed away on the way to Delhi, officers at the Kasna police station had already registered a case based on Kanchan’s testimony.
Investigators quickly concluded that this was not an accident but a clear case of dowry murder. Additional DCP Sudhir Kumar confirmed that the victim was admitted on the evening of August 21 with critical burns and later died during transit to Delhi, which established foul play.
That very night, police acted fast and arrested 28-year-old Vipin Bhati, the prime accused and Nikki’s husband. Authorities assured the public, stating, “The deceased’s husband/accused has been taken into custody… Teams have been formed to arrest the others.”
Based on Kanchan’s eyewitness account and the shocking video evidence, the police registered an FIR against four family members: Nikki’s husband Vipin, her brother-in-law Rohit, and her parents-in-law, Daya and Satveer. The case included charges of murder, voluntarily causing hurt, and criminal conspiracy. Police also indicated that dowry harassment charges were being considered, although they were not added at the first stage.
While Vipin was already in custody, the other three accused fled immediately after the incident. Police launched raids at multiple locations to catch them, but they remained on the run in the following days. To stop any escape, officers set up checkpoints around the region and deployed several teams dedicated to tracking down Nikki’s in-laws.

Public Anger and the Family’s Demand for Justice
The shocking news of this dowry-fueled murder spread rapidly and caused widespread outrage in the community and beyond. People were horrified not just by the brutality of the crime, but by the fact that it highlighted the ongoing plague of dowry-related violence in India. Despite laws in place for decades, the country still records more than 6,000 dowry deaths every year. Women’s rights activists and local residents condemned the killing, pointing out that Nikki’s tragic death was yet another reminder that in 2025, dowry harassment continues to be a deadly reality.
For Nikki’s family, the grief was unbearable and mixed with anger. Her elder sister Kanchan, who narrowly survived that terrifying night, gave police and the media detailed accounts of the abuse both sisters endured for years. She made it clear that the in-laws’ demand for ₹36 lakh was the root cause. Kanchan stated bluntly, “my sister was murdered by her husband and in-laws for failing to meet their dowry demand of ₹36 lakh.” She further revealed that she too had been attacked repeatedly, including on the very night of the murder. According to her, between 1:30 am and 4 am that Thursday, she was beaten by family members who mocked her over dowry and told her she was “better off dead.” Her testimony painted a chilling picture of how greed had turned one family into tormentors of both daughters.
The most forceful demands for justice came from Nikki’s father, Bhikari Singh Payla. He had not only lost a daughter to alleged cruelty and greed, but his other daughter, Kanchan, remained trapped in the same household as a victim of similar abuse. With pain in his voice, he said, “They kept harassing her and ultimately killed her, despite having been given everything they demanded.” He recalled how he had already met their wishes, giving them a Scorpio SUV and a Bullet motorcycle, yet, as he put it, “they kept torturing my daughter” even after taking those gifts.
He went further, exposing how relentless the demands had been. When he bought himself a Mercedes car, Vipin began insisting that this vehicle too should be handed over as part of dowry. It was, for the grieving father, a symbol of the bottomless greed that had consumed his daughter’s in-laws.
Shattered by his daughter’s death, Bhikari Singh turned his grief into a fierce call for action. He vowed that he would go on a hunger strike if strong and swift steps were not taken against the accused. Speaking publicly, he urged the authorities to make an example of the case. His appeal was direct and filled with anger: “The accused should be shot in an encounter. This is Yogi ji’s government – bulldozers should be used on their house. Otherwise, we will sit on a hunger strike.” He demanded that the family home of Vipin and his parents be demolished and that the killers pay with their lives. His voice carried both anguish and a clear demand for retribution.
His plea did not stop there. In another emotional statement, he declared, “They killed my elder daughter… They should be hanged.” Nikki’s mother, also broken with grief, echoed his words, insisting that Vipin and his mother Daya “should be hanged” for what they had done.
As the family spoke out, the public began to gather in solidarity. Outside Kasna police station in Greater Noida, a large crowd formed. Neighbors, locals, and supporters of the family demanded justice and accountability. They insisted on immediate arrests of all those who were still absconding. The tension was high as emotions ran deep, with people warning that they would not accept any leniency for the accused.
The police stepped forward to assure the protesters. Senior officers promised that all efforts were underway to catch the fugitives and that justice would not be delayed. After these assurances and promises of a swift probe, the crowd gradually dispersed. The family, still in mourning, said they were satisfied that the authorities were taking the matter seriously and would not allow any lapse in the investigation.

Accused Husband Injured in Police Encounter While Fleeing
Just two days after the murder, the case took a dramatic turn. On August 24, 2025 (Sunday), the prime accused, Vipin Bhati, was shot in the leg by police when he allegedly tried to escape custody.
According to Greater Noida’s Additional DCP, Sudhir Kumar, the incident took place when officers escorted Vipin out of lockup “for recovery” – a standard procedure used to locate evidence such as a weapon or substance connected to the crime. During this process, Vipin attempted to break free. He even tried to snatch a pistol from one of the policemen and make a run for it. The officers acted quickly to stop him, and in the confrontation that followed, they fired at his leg to incapacitate him, bringing him back under control.
The encounter happened on Sunday, just a day after his initial arrest, showing how volatile the situation had become. Vipin was taken for medical treatment immediately after the shooting. The bullet wound in his leg was not life-threatening, and he remained in custody under guard after receiving care. Officials later explained that the firing was an act of self-defense, necessary because the accused not only tried to escape but also attempted to arm himself with a policeman’s weapon.
Following this incident, Vipin made a startling statement that only deepened the shock. Speaking after his treatment, he told ANI reporters, “I have no remorse. I haven’t killed her. She died on her own. Husband and wife often have fights, it is very common.” These chilling words reflected a complete denial of responsibility and showed no empathy for the brutal death of his wife.
The timing of this encounter carried an eerie irony. It came only hours after Nikki’s father had demanded encounter-style justice. He had said, “They are killers, they should be shot.” While the police insisted their actions were driven purely by Vipin’s escape attempt, many observers could not ignore how quickly the father’s demand had, in part, materialized. Vipin was not killed, but the fact that he was shot while trying to flee sent a powerful message that the case was being handled with zero tolerance.
The Greater Noida police confirmed that they were still searching for the other accused family members, who remained on the run. They emphasized that every effort was being made to bring them to justice. At the same time, there was also talk of possible “bulldozer action” – the demolition of illegal parts of the Bhati family’s property. This echoed the father’s call for strong punishment and was consistent with the hardline approach sometimes used in Uttar Pradesh. Officials clarified that such measures would only be carried out after proper verification and due process.

Ongoing Investigation and Wider Implications
As of the most recent updates, the focus of the authorities remains firmly on delivering justice for Nikki. The main accused, Vipin Bhati, continues to be under arrest. After being injured in the police encounter, he is now hospitalized under police guard for his leg wound and will face charges of murder and other serious offenses. The three other accused – Nikki’s mother-in-law Daya, father-in-law Satveer, and brother-in-law Rohit – are still absconding. Police teams are actively tracking them and have expressed confidence that they will be apprehended soon. Officers have also assured both the public and Nikki’s family that all those responsible for this heinous crime will be brought to justice. Police have even hinted that if the fugitives resist arrest violently, then similar strict action, including encounter tactics, could be used, as their priority is to prevent any escape from accountability.
This case has once again reignited conversations across India about the persistent menace of dowry-related violence. Despite strong laws like the Dowry Prohibition Act and provisions under the Indian Penal Code that deal with dowry harassment and dowry deaths, cases of abuse continue to be reported in alarming numbers. Nikki’s case stands out not only because of its brutality but because it underlines a bitter truth: even women who are educated, independent, and supported by their natal families can still fall victim to a greedy and violent in-law household.
Every year, thousands of women across India become victims of dowry harassment, with many cases ending in deaths. These deaths often occur through bride burnings, forced suicides, or murders disguised as accidents. Data shows that India still witnesses over 6,000 dowry deaths annually, a number that remains disturbingly high despite decades of legal battles and awareness campaigns. Nikki’s murder has now become part of this grim statistic, but unlike many cases that go unnoticed, hers has captured nationwide attention. The reason lies in the disturbing videos, the eyewitness testimony, and the sheer cruelty that shocked the conscience of people across the country.
The Uttar Pradesh state government has taken note of the case, and there is immense pressure to ensure a fast-track investigation and trial. Public figures, activists, and ordinary citizens alike are demanding that this case become an example – one that sends a strong message that dowry killings will not be tolerated.
Meanwhile, Nikki’s family is left mourning an irreplaceable loss. They have not only lost a daughter but also a young mother whose little child witnessed the horror firsthand. Family sources revealed that Nikki’s son, who saw his own mother set ablaze, is now receiving counseling and care under the support of relatives. His future, like his mother’s life, has been scarred forever.
Her elder sister, Kanchan, who survived the same night of violence, continues to grieve. Speaking to reporters through tears, she said, “Nothing is left now, my sister is gone… She was so young.” She recalled their bond, explaining how close they were in age, so much so that people often mistook them for twins. The sisters had always stood side by side, until that night when Kanchan’s desperate attempts could not save Nikki’s life.
Looking ahead, the coming days are expected to bring further developments. These may include the arrest of the remaining fugitives, the filing of formal charges and indictments, and the legal proceedings that will work toward conviction and sentencing. For now, the Greater Noida dowry murder case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of dowry greed.
From a 2016 marriage that began with expensive gifts, to nearly a decade of harassment, and finally a horrifying murder in 2025 followed by a dramatic police encounter, the timeline of events has shaken an entire community. Nikki’s family continues to demand justice, not only for their daughter but for the hope that her death will awaken society to the dangers of dowry. Her father summarized the pain and anger in one haunting sentence: “They tortured her and killed her for money.” Now, all eyes are on whether the legal system and the state will ensure that this crime is punished, and that such a tragedy does not repeat itself.
