Bareilly Police arrested 'Haidari Dal' mastermind Mazhar Ansari for fueling communal discord by spreading fake videos and harassing couples under the pretext of protecting the sanctity of the burqa and Islam

In a significant stride toward curbing digital vigilantism and restoring communal harmony, the Bareilly Police have apprehended Muhammad Mazhar Ansari, the alleged digital architect behind the controversial group known as ‘Haidari Dal’. The arrest marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing investigation into the group, which notoriously claims to ‘protect’ Islam and the ‘sanctity’ of burqa through aggressive moral policing and online intimidation.

The Arrest and Digital Deception
Operating out of the shadows, Ansari was identified as the key figure orchestrating the group's online presence. The Kotwali police executed a precise operation to take him into custody from the Purana Roadways area before presenting him to the court. According to police reports, Ansari was not merely a follower but a primary instigator, managing multiple internet media accounts under the ‘Haidari Dal’ banner to disseminate inflammatory content across various platforms.
Investigators revealed a persistent game of cat-and-mouse between Ansari and law enforcement. Following earlier police crackdowns where several associates were jailed for similar offenses, Ansari resorted to digital camouflage. To evade detection, he rebranded his accounts, most notably changing one to “Aiz on Muslim Girls”. A forensic analysis of his mobile phone uncovered a history of such name changes, allowing him to maintain a steady stream of divisive content despite mounting scrutiny.

Fabricating Narratives: The 'News' FactoryClips Altered and Circulated as News
A disturbing aspect of Ansari's modus operandi was the manipulation of information. During the interrogation, investigators discovered that Ansari routinely sourced unrelated or dated videos from the internet, editing them to strip away their original context. These doctored clips were then re-uploaded and presented as breaking news, deliberately crafted to mislead the public into believing the events were recent and real.
The police recovered a cache of such fabricated evidence, including videos related to past disturbances in Bareilly and clips of police officers’ statements. These were weaponized to fuel the group's narrative and incite discord.

From Momos to Moral Policing: A Profile of the Accused
Mazhar Ansari’s background paints a picture of a migrant worker leading a dual life. Originally from Champadah village in the Giridih district of Jharkhand, the Class 10 dropout is the son of a farmer and the second of five siblings. His work history reveals a nomadic existence across India’s urban service sector.
He detailed his employment timeline to the police: until April of last year, he prepared momos at Place Cafe in Ghutali, Bengaluru. By October, he had migrated to Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, working as a helper at Pulwacharu Restaurant. Most recently, since December 4th, he had been employed at Jamaluddin’s shop in Delhi, once again making momos. This mundane daily reality stood in stark contrast to his influential and disruptive role in the virtual world.

Law Enforcement Crackdown Post-EidPolice action since Eid
The police have been relentless in their pursuit of the group since the festival of Eid, when ‘Haidari Dal’ first came into the spotlight. Officials report that young men operating under the group's aegis were actively harassing Muslim women and non-Muslim men. These vigilantes were involved in misbehaving with couples, violating their privacy by recording non-consensual videos, and broadcasting them online to shame the victims.
The menace first gained public attention when distressing videos began circulating from Gandhi Udyan in Bareilly. The police emphasize that they acted in time, initiating strict measures against those involved to prevent further escalation.
Understanding the Haidari Dal Threat - What is Haidari Dal
Haidari Dal operates as an informal, decentralized vigilante network spanning multiple cities. While the group asserts it is safeguarding religious values, its actions tell a different story. Members have been documented questioning and intimidating Muslim women found in the company of non-Muslim men, as well as harassing their male companions.
The social media footprint of this harassment was largely concentrated on an Instagram page titled “Haidari Dal Official”, which has since been removed. This platform was used to conduct moral policing and propagate fear among the youth. Officials have termed the arrest of Muhammad Mazhar Ansari as a critical victory in halting this specific brand of digital harassment and are confident it will lead to tracing other active participants in this network.
