"एक हसीना थी": Shimjitha Mustafa is jailed in Kerala for abetting Deepak’s suicide after police reveal she edited a viral video to falsely accuse him of bus harassment, turning a birthday into a heartbreaking tragedy

KOZHIKODE – In a tragic case that highlights the perilous intersection of social media accusations and real-world consequences, police have arrested a woman in connection with the suicide of a man she publicly accused of harassment.
The authorities confirmed on Wednesday that Shimjitha Mustafa, the woman from Kerala accused of abetting the suicide of a young man through a viral video, was arrested on January 21, 2026. The incident has sparked intense debate across the state regarding public vigilantism and the verification of online claims.

The Accusation and the Tragedy
The sequence of events began earlier this week, centered around a digital allegation that spiraled into a fatal tragedy. The 35-year-old woman from Vadakara is accused of being the primary cause behind the suicide of 42-year-old U Deepak from Govindapuram.
According to the police reports, the situation escalated rapidly after he killed himself after she accused him of inappropriately touching her in a crowded bus. The digital shaming campaign reportedly left the man with no avenue for defense.
The incident started on January 16, when Shimjitha posted a video on Instagram alleging that Deepak had molested her by inappropriately touching her during a crowded bus journey on a private vehicle from Ramanthali to Payyannur in Kannur district.
The footage struck a chord on social media platforms, which are often used to highlight women's safety issues. Consequently, the clip quickly went viral, amassing over two million views and triggering widespread online backlash and trolling directed at Deepak.
Tragically, the weight of this sudden infamy proved too much. Deeply distressed by the public shaming and mental anguish, Deepak took his life by hanging at his residence on January 18, coincidentally his birthday.

Conflicting Narratives and Video Analysis
While the initial online reaction was one of outrage against Deepak, the narrative began to shift following his death. His family insists any physical contact was unintentional due to the bus’s overcrowding and erratic driving, common in Kerala’s public transport, and that there was no deliberate misconduct.
As investigators and internet sleuths revisited the footage, doubts emerged. Amid this, netizens started to allege that Deepak was falsely accused by Shimjitha. A closer frame-by-frame analysis suggested a different context than what was originally claimed.
According to many, the video initially showed Shimjitha and Deepak standing in the bus with some distance between them. The dynamics changed as the bus moved. After some time, it appears that the woman moved and turned toward him. The critical moment of contact, upon review, seemed ambiguous to many observers. As Deepak was holding onto the headrest of a seat to balance himself in the moving bus, his elbow appeared to brush her chest.
Despite this, Shimjitha claimed that he did it deliberately. She also claimed she started filming him after she saw him similarly touching another woman, an allegation that is now under scrutiny.

Police Investigation and Evidence
Law enforcement has taken a serious view of the case, looking beyond the social media narrative to the hard evidence. After his death, his family filed a case against her, accusing her of abetting his suicide.
Acting on this complaint, police registered a case against Shimjitha under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (abetment to suicide), a non-bailable offence. The investigation has already uncovered potential discrepancies in the accuser's story.
Preliminary forensic findings suggest manipulation of the digital evidence. Investigations revealed that the viral video was edited to shorten its duration, and her phone will be checked to retrieve the full video.
Furthermore, authorities are corroborating the events with independent systems; police have collected CCTV footage from the bus for analysis. Crucially, the accounts from those physically present on the bus contradict the online claims. According to the staff of the bus who saw the footage, it didn’t show any kind of sexual misconduct.
The testimony of the transport employees has become a key element of the defense. Bus staff, including the conductor and driver, stated that no complaint was raised at the time, and no incident was reported to them.

The Manhunt and Arrest
Following the registration of the FIR, the accused evaded authorities. Shimjitha had gone into hiding after the case was filed, with her phone switched off and social media accounts locked or deactivated.
Sensing the tightening net, she attempted to seek legal reprieve. She had also approached the Kozhikode District Court seeking anticipatory bail, but police acted swiftly before it could be considered.
The operation to apprehend her was extensive. Police from the Kozhikode Medical College station took her into custody from a relative’s house in Vadakara, where she had been hiding after the registration of a case against her.
This success marked the conclusion of a significant search operation. The arrest came after a multi-day manhunt, during which authorities issued a lookout notice to prevent her from fleeing the country amid fears she might escape abroad.

Judicial Proceedings
To maintain order and ensure security, the police executed the transfer of the accused with caution. The arrest operation was conducted discreetly, with officers using a private vehicle rather than a police van. Eyewitnesses noted that visuals showed her being brought in wearing a burqa with her face covered.
Legal proceedings commenced immediately upon her detention. After a medical examination, Shimjitha Mustafa was presented before the Kundamangalam court, and she has been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.
Following the court's order, she was subsequently shifted to the women’s section of Manjeri jail. As the investigation continues, the police will focus on retrieving the original unedited video and cross-referencing it with the bus CCTV footage to uncover the complete truth behind the incident that claimed Deepak's life.
