Aligarh police booked Qasim, his mother Parveen, and others after a minor ₹500 dispute in Jadaula village exploded into a brutal assault on a Dalit couple, involving violent casteist slurs and terrifying death threats

An argument over a small sum of money escalated into violence in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh district, where local police have registered a case against a family and several other individuals. The confrontation involved the assault of a Dalit couple, the use of caste-based slurs, and verbal death threats.
The trouble began in Jadaula village, an area under the care of the Harduaganj police station. A local Dalit man named Lavkush was beaten by a neighboring family following a disagreement regarding a ₹500 payment intended for repairing a paved lane. According to statements provided by Lavkush, the situation turned violent when the neighbors entered his property. He reported that his wife, Prabha, was attacked inside their family home with sticks, kicks, and punches, and that her clothes were torn during the struggle. When Lavkush attempted to shield her from the blows, the attackers turned on him as well, delivering a severe beating.
Following the incident, a First Information Report (FIR) was drafted, naming 10 specific individuals as perpetrators. Among those identified are four brothers—Mohammad Qasim, Nasir, Salman, and Aas Mohammad—who are the sons of a local resident named Akbar Khan. Their mother, Parveen, was also named as a primary participant in the confrontation.
While the victims sought immediate legal recourse, the registration of the formal complaint faced delays at the local police station. Lavkush walked to the Harduaganj police station to explain the entire ordeal to the officers on duty, but the paperwork was not processed right away. The official FIR was only registered after representatives from the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) intervened to assist the family.
The police filed the case under multiple legal provisions, including the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities (SC/ST) Act, alongside charges related to rioting and the molestation of a woman. Shortly after this initial filing, the accused neighbors submitted a counter-complaint with the police. This cross-FIR targets Lavkush, his brother Deepak, his wife Prabha, 11 other named individuals, and a group of 15 to 20 unidentified people, accusing them of physical assault and criminal intimidation.

Detailed breakdown of the confrontation
Lavkush is a daily-wage laborer who works hard to provide for his young family in Jadaula village, pulling in a modest daily income of ₹700. He and Prabha are the parents of two young sons: a 4-year-old and an infant who is only 5 to 6 months old. While Lavkush works outside the home, Prabha stays back to handle the household chores and nurse their children.
The family’s financial stability was recently shaken when their eldest son fell ill. The child was diagnosed with typhoid, a severe bacterial infection that requires constant care and medication. Because of his son's medical crisis, Lavkush was unable to go out and look for daily labor for 10 consecutive days. This sudden loss of income severely strained the family's finances, leaving them with no savings to handle unexpected costs.
Conflict stems from dismantled road and demands for cash
The roots of the dispute trace back to a local infrastructure project. The village Pradhan, or community chief, had authorized the construction of a new main road through the area. However, the engineering of the project was flawed; the newly built road sat higher than the existing paved pathway leading to the houses. This elevation difference turned the pathway into a low-lying basin, causing dirty drainage water to pool outside the homes, which created a major daily inconvenience for the neighborhood.
Seeking a quick fix, a local family took matters into their own hands and completely tore up the existing paved pathway. This independent demolition made the ground muddy and even harder to navigate. To fix the issue, the surrounding residents agreed to collectively fund the restoration of the pathway. Every single household in the immediate area was asked to contribute a flat fee of ₹500 to pay for the materials.
When the organizers approached Lavkush for his share, he did not refuse to pay. Instead, he explained his current predicament, pointing out that his son was terribly sick with typhoid and that he had not earned any wages for over a week. He politely requested a short extension of a few days until he could return to work. This request was rejected, sparking an intense verbal argument between Parveen and Prabha.
Assault escalates inside the family home
The situation boiled over at 8:00 am on May 27th. Parveen walked directly into Lavkush’s private residence to demand the ₹500 restoration fee. Prabha met her at the door and tried to explain their difficult financial circumstances and the ongoing health struggles of her young son. Rather than showing understanding, Parveen dismissed the excuse with a harsh retort. According to the official complaint, Parveen looked at the mother and stated, “Well, your son isn’t dead yet, is he? Why doesn’t he just die?”
These deeply insensitive words deeply upset Prabha, causing the verbal face-off between the two women to intensify. As the shouting match escalated, Parveen called out to her sons, who were waiting nearby.
Within moments, Parveen's sons and daughters-in-law rushed into the house and launched a coordinated physical attack against Prabha. The group used heavy wooden sticks and iron rods to strike her, kicking and punching her before throwing her heavily to the floor. The physical struggle was so violent that Prabha's clothes were torn. Seeing his wife in danger, Lavkush stepped between her and the attackers, absorbing several blows from the wooden sticks.
The loud screams and sounds of fighting eventually drew the attention of nearby neighbors. A crowd gathered outside the house and intervened, pulling the attackers away and rescuing the injured couple. As the group was forced out of the house, they turned back to deliver a harsh threat to the couple, stating, “You batad Chamars, you got away this time, but if we catch you again, we will either kill you or drive you out of the village.”
Aerial bombardment with bricks and stones
The tension did not subside after the initial morning brawl. On May 30th, the harassment continued when a shower of heavy bricks and stones was launched directly from the neighbors' rooftop. Parveen, her sons, and their respective wives gathered on their roof to launch a coordinated bombardment aimed directly at Lavkush’s small home.
Both Lavkush and his brother, Deepak, sustained painful physical injuries during this sudden aerial assault, leaving them with severe bruises and soreness across their heads and hands. Video footage captured during the chaos shows a visibly shaken and distressed Lavkush trying to shield his body from the falling debris. While the stones flew, the family inside the neighboring house locked their doors securely from the inside. Meanwhile, many of the surrounding villagers chose to stand by passively, watching the entire event unfold without stepping in to assist. Although local police officers eventually arrived at the scene after being notified of the ongoing riot, they failed to detain anyone or take immediate on-site action.
Victim files complaint naming 10 residents
Frustrated by the lack of immediate protection, Lavkush walked to the Harduaganj police station to lodge a formal criminal complaint. However, the officers on duty showed visible reluctance to document the case. Seeking assistance, Lavkush contacted local representatives of the VHP. Members of the organization accompanied him back to the station, applying the necessary pressure to ensure the police formally recorded the details of the assault. The organization publicly noted that Lavkush belongs to the vulnerable Jatav community and had been targeted and beaten by his neighbors.
The resulting FIR officially names 10 individuals involved in the planning and execution of the attack:
Mohammad Qasim
Nasir
Salman
Aas Mohammad
Parveen (wife of Akbar Khan)
Anees (brother-in-law of Akbar Khan)
Gulfasa (wife of Aas Mohammad)
Aslam (son of Iqbal)
Sheru (son of Badshah)
Yameen (son of Lalkhan)
The police have invoked Section 3(2)(va) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST) Prevention of Atrocities Act against the accused group. Additionally, they face multiple charges under the modern Indian criminal code, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 191(2) for rioting, Section 333 for house-trespass after preparation for hurt, Section 76 for assault or use of criminal force to a woman with intent to disrobe, Section 351(3) for criminal intimidation by threatening death, and Section 115(2) for voluntarily causing hurt. Together, these charges address a broad range of criminal acts, including caste-motivated offenses, home invasion, physical violence, the public humiliation of a woman, and explicit death threats.
Neighboring family submits cross-complaint
Very shortly after Lavkush successfully registered his case, the opposing family arrived at the Harduaganj police station to present their own version of the events. The local police quickly processed this counter-complaint, generating a second FIR against the Dalit family and their supporters.
This counter-claim asserts that Lavkush and his brother, Deepak, were the true instigators of the violence. The neighbors alleged that the two brothers had advanced on their property armed with heavy wooden sticks and clubs. They also claimed that the brothers had initiated the property damage by hurling bricks and stones directly at their home during the neighborhood dispute.
Based on these allegations, the local police registered charges against a large group of people, specifically naming Lavkush, Prabha, Deepak, and his wife Kranti. The cross-FIR also names local residents Sherpal, Guddu, Sonu, Pirmukhi, Devendra, and Rajkumar, alongside an estimated 15 to 20 unidentified individuals. This group faces multiple charges under the BNS, including Section 115(2) for voluntarily causing hurt, Section 125 for acts endangering life or personal safety, Section 190 for unlawful assembly, Sections 191(2) and 191(3) for rioting with deadly weapons, Section 324(4) for mischief causing damage, Section 333 for criminal trespass, and Section 351(2) for criminal intimidation.
