Barrackpore outraged as TMC leader Rabindranath Bhattacharya was arrested for kicking 81-year-old Tulsi Adhikari to death for protesting unlawful building construction near his Manirampur residence

Tragedy in Barrackpore: TMC Leader Held for Fatal Assault on Elderly Protester

A dispute over unauthorized construction took a deadly turn in the quiet neighborhoods of Barrackpore, sending shockwaves through the community and igniting a political firestorm in West Bengal. On Sunday, February 8th, the local police arrested Rabindranath Bhattacharya, a senior lawyer and influential leader of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC or TMC), following the lodging of a First Information Report (FIR). The complaint accuses him of a brutal assault that led to the death of 81-year-old Tulsi Adhikari in the North 24 Parganas district.

The incident has drawn sharp attention to the issue of illegal urban development and the conduct of local political figures. Adhikari, an octogenarian resident of Manirampur near Bally Ghat, had stood up to confront the accused regarding a three-story illegal building being constructed adjacent to his home. According to local accounts, the situation escalated when Bhattacharya arrived at the scene of a demonstration against this unlawful construction on Saturday, February 7th. What began as a verbal altercation quickly descended into physical violence.

Witnesses report that the elderly victim stepped in to protect his son, Hemant, who was initially attacked by the politician. The confrontation ended in tragedy; Adhikari’s family members expressed that the Bhattacharya kicked the elderly man who fell down. The impact was fatal. He was rushed to a Barrackpore cantonment hospital, where he was pronounced dead, leaving his family and neighbors in deep mourning.

The legal repercussions were swift. Bhattacharya was brought before a Barrackpore court the following afternoon as he was charged with murder under section 101 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Despite his prominent standing as the secretary of the Barrackpore Bar Association and a TMC councillor representing North Barrackpore Municipality’s Ward Number 23, the judiciary showed no leniency. His bail plea was rejected, and he was placed under seven days of remand in police custody by sub-divisional court judge.

Authorities are now piecing together the events that led to this loss of life. “An investigation is on, and the accused will be further interrogated. We are also waiting for the autopsy report to know the exact cause of the victim’s death,” informed an official close to the investigation. The police have since cordoned off the area and are meticulously examining CCTV footage taken at the scene of the incident. Additionally, they are recording the statements of neighbours and witnesses to build a watertight case.

The tragedy is compounded by the family's prior attempts to seek a peaceful resolution. The Adhikari family had protested to Bhattacharya about the unauthorised structure but no action was transpired hence they submitted an official complaint with the municipality to pay heed to their request. The lack of administrative response has now become a central point of the public's anger.

In the wake of the arrest, the political machinery has reacted promptly. Bhattacharya was reportedly suspended from the party for six years, a move seen as damage control by the state's ruling party. However, this has done little to quell the opposition. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched an agitation and demanded capital punishment for Bhattacharya. The opposition party further alleged that the accused had been receiving “VIP treatment” behind bars, a claim that has added fuel to the protesting crowds.

Tensions ran high as BJP workers marched from Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s statue at Chiria More to the Barrackpore court. The protest was organized under the leadership of former MP Arjun Singh and Barrackpore organisational district president of the party, Tapas Ghosh. The demonstration turned chaotic as they broke over police barricades and held a sit-in, obstructing traffic as well as blocking the road for some time, which resulted in furious exchanges and minor spats with cops.

Addressing the gathered media and supporters, Arjun Singh clarified the intent behind their agitation while acknowledging the needs of the wider public. “We are protesting the VIP treatment given by the police to the killer councillor. We are lifting the sit-in for the sake of students appearing for the Madhyamik (class 10 state board) examinations. But once the exams are over, we will launch a larger protest movement if justice is not delivered,” Singh declared.

As the investigation continues, the authorities have reiterated their commitment to probing the root cause of the conflict. “We are investigating the involvement of local leaders in the illegal construction that triggered the protest. The body of the deceased has been sent for a postmortem to determine the exact cause of his death,” the authorities mentioned. For the residents of Barrackpore, however, the focus remains on whether justice will truly be served for Tulsi Adhikari, a man who lost his life simply trying to protect his home and his family.
